Why the usual Day-Date instructions may not apply
“Day-Date” covers watches with different movements. Rolex’s general Day-Date guide describes a self-winding mechanical watch, while the current Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40 use self-winding mechanical calibre 3255. Those instructions do not establish how to set a vintage Oysterquartz.

What to do before setting your Oysterquartz
- Identify the watch and movement. Check the reference and any reliable documentation for your watch. Do not rely on “Day-Date” alone to identify the setting procedure.
- Get instructions for that specific reference. Ask Rolex for reference-specific guidance or consult a qualified watchmaker familiar with Oysterquartz.
- Do not force an unclear crown action. If you are unsure which position controls the day, date or time—or feel resistance—stop and ask a watchmaker rather than testing positions or directions.
Why not follow Rolex’s general Day-Date guide?
Rolex’s Day-Date PDF describes a self-winding mechanical movement. In that guide, the unscrewed crown’s first notch sets the date clockwise and the day counterclockwise; the second notch sets the time in either direction. It also explains that a date change while setting the time means the hands have crossed midnight. These are instructions for the mechanical Day-Date covered by the guide, not verified directions for a vintage Oysterquartz.
The guide also says to turn the crown a minimum of 25 times to give an unworn or stopped mechanical Day-Date an adequate partial winding. That winding advice is specific to the mechanical watch in the guide and does not apply as an Oysterquartz setting step. See the Rolex Day-Date user guide.

What is established—and what is not
The specialist reference reports that calibre 5055 has quick-set day and date, while calibre 5035 has quick-set date. A search result identifies a technical document titled “Calibres 5035 and 5055,” but its PDF could not be opened; its contents therefore do not verify a usable owner-setting sequence. The verified sources do not establish the Oysterquartz Day-Date’s crown positions or turning directions.
Quick-set capability alone is not enough to infer how to operate the crown safely. Use instructions for the exact reference, especially if the calendar does not respond as expected or the crown’s action is unclear.
