Choose a world-time watch by how you need to use time zones: check a remote city, keep home time visible while showing local time, or set the main display to your destination. Then verify that the watch supports your destinations’ actual offsets, gives you the daylight-saving controls you need, and can be corrected where you travel. “World time” describes several different features, not one universal standard.
Choose how you want to see home and local time
Start with the display arrangement you will use most. A watch may let you look up one selected city, show home and local time at the same time, or change its main display to the destination time. Those approaches serve different travel habits.

One selected city for a quick reference
Some watches show a chosen World Time city alongside the regular time display. Casio’s Module 5765, for example, lets you look up one of 26 cities and 38 time zones, and includes a home/world-time swap. That is useful for checking another city or making its time primary, but it is not the same as keeping two zones continuously visible. Home and local time visible together
If you frequently coordinate with home while abroad, look for a watch that displays both zones at once. Seiko’s 8B54 is one example: its main watch can be set to local time by selecting a region, while a subdial retains home time. Destination time on the main display
If you prefer the main display to show the time where you are, check how the watch changes its primary time zone. Seiko’s 8B54 instructions describe selecting among 24 regions to set local time, with home time remaining on the subdial. A different model may instead require setting a time difference or swapping the home and world-time displays. Read the exact operating instructions before buying so you know what changes when you arrive.
Compare what the documented examples actually do
These movement- or module-specific examples illustrate different implementations. Their city, zone, or region counts should not be treated as directly comparable standards: the terms and functions differ, and not every destination is represented in the same way.

Check whether the watch can represent your destinations
A city count alone does not tell you whether a watch can show the correct time for every place you visit. Check the cities or regions it offers and, where available, the time-difference setting. Some places use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets, and a watch that only supports whole-hour changes may not represent them correctly. Seiko’s 8B54 manual specifically notes fractional offsets and warns that time differences can change by region. Understand daylight-saving adjustments
Time-zone selection and daylight-saving time (DST) are separate considerations. On the cited Casio Module 5765, summer time can be set to automatic, standard, or daylight time. The manual warns that a manually specified time zone without a city name may require you to switch between standard and daylight time yourself. It also says that selecting UTC prevents changing or checking the summer-time setting. These behaviors are module-specific, so check the relevant instructions for the exact watch. Do not assume a stored city or region will always have the same offset: local rules can change. If your itinerary includes places that observe DST, find out whether the watch adjusts automatically, needs a manual seasonal change, or offers no suitable setting.
Decide whether phone-free setting matters
Some watches have city selections or settings that are unavailable through the watch’s buttons. On Module 5765, Casio says some World Time cities can only be selected in the CASIO WATCHES app. If you want to set a destination without a paired phone, check whether every city and adjustment you need can be chosen directly on the watch. Do not confuse world time with worldwide synchronization
A world-time display can calculate or show another zone without automatically correcting the watch everywhere. The cited Seiko 1B25/1B35 and 8B54 instructions describe radio reception in specified regions and within signal range; reception can also depend on local conditions. Seiko’s 8B54 manual states that the watch cannot receive radio signals outside the reception range. If you travel beyond supported areas, be prepared to set or correct the time another way, and check the exact model’s instructions for its reception coverage. Use this checklist before choosing
- Display: Do you need a remote-city reference, simultaneous home and local time, or destination time on the main display?
- Coverage: Are your usual cities or regions selectable, and can the watch handle any half-hour or quarter-hour offsets you need?
- DST: Does it adjust automatically, provide a manual setting, or require seasonal changes by you?
- Setup: Can you select your destinations on the watch, or does the feature depend on an app?
- Correction: If it uses radio reception, are your destinations within the documented reception areas and range?
- Travel friction: Check the manual’s steps for changing local time, swapping displays, and restoring your home-time view. A feature is only convenient if its controls suit how you travel.
- Exact watch: Verify the module or movement in the specific retail model and check its regional specifications; a movement manual does not establish the availability or full features of every watch using it.
The cited manuals establish feature behavior, not current prices, availability, wrist-size comparisons, battery-life rankings, or comparative test results. Use them to verify operation, then check the exact watch’s current product specification for any purchase-specific details.
