How does a world-time watch show another city’s time?
A city name or code on a watch is a representative label for a city or time-zone setting, not a guarantee that every place is supported individually. The available cities and the offsets used depend on the model. Electronic city selection
Some digital or analog-digital watches calculate another city’s time using the selected city or time zone and the watch’s home-time setting. Casio says the World Time values for its module 5765 are tied to the Timekeeping Mode, so an incorrect Home City or base time can make the displayed result wrong. Casio World Time Module No. 5765

In that module, the crown is used to select a city or time zone, and the hour and minute hands show the selected zone’s time. If you select a time zone that has no marked city, the manual says to choose the summer-time setting as needed. The control and display method is model-specific. Casio World Time Module No. 5765

Mechanical city discs and rings
Other designs use a 24-hour indication with a rotating or aligned city disc. NOMOS’s setup instructions describe a world-time display that relies on synchronization and a correctly set city disc. The city-code offsets in those instructions do not include daylight saving, a limitation of the described setup rather than a rule for all mechanical watches. How do I read a world-time city ring?
Use the home city’s current 24-hour time as the reference, then read the corresponding hour for the other city against the city labels. On the city-ring method Citizen describes, minutes remain the same while the hour changes according to the city’s offset. The ring expresses whole-hour differences; it does not calculate daylight saving, so the reader must account for that separately. Citizen Watch Global Network: World Time

Does a world-time watch adjust for daylight saving?
There is no single answer across the category. A city ring may need a manual adjustment or mental correction, while an electronic watch may provide a selectable summer-time setting. Check the instructions for the exact model and selected city or zone rather than assuming daylight saving is automatic. Citizen explicitly says its ring-reading method does not account for DST. Settings can also be limited by the selected zone. Casio’s module 5480 manual says its DST setting applies to the currently selected time zone and cannot be changed while UTC is selected. Casio Operation Guide 5480
What should I check if another city is one hour off?
- Check the reference time. Confirm the Home City and the current base time. For Casio module 5765, World Time is synchronized with Timekeeping Mode, and the manual advises checking those settings if a displayed value seems wrong. Casio World Time Module No. 5765
- Check the destination’s seasonal time. Find out whether the location is currently observing daylight saving and whether the watch expects a manual STD/DST or summer-time selection. A city ring cannot infer seasonal clock changes. Citizen Watch Global Network: World Time
- Inspect the model’s zone setting. Select the intended city or zone, then consult the watch’s manual for its DST control. On Casio module 5480, for instance, the DST option applies only to the selected zone and is unavailable when UTC is selected. Casio Operation Guide 5480
- Verify local rules. Locations do not all change clocks on the same date, and some do not observe daylight saving. The watch manuals cited here explain settings but do not provide a comprehensive current DST calendar; check local rules when exact time matters.

- City coverage and offset granularity: which cities or time zones are available, and how the watch represents locations without a named city.
- How the display works: whether a city ring or disc is manually aligned, or a watch movement or electronic setting drives the indication.
- How many times are visible: whether the watch shows a selected second zone or makes multiple city times readable at once.
- Daylight-saving handling: whether DST is automatic, selectable, or something you must account for yourself.
- Readability: whether the city labels and 24-hour scale are easy to distinguish at a glance.
