When does buying new make more sense?
Choose new when being the first owner, buying the current model, or getting the brand’s applicable new-purchase coverage matters more than access to an older reference or a particular pre-owned offer. Use the brand’s own authorized-seller directory or confirmation process, and check what documentation is needed to activate or claim coverage.

Warranty terms differ by brand and geography. Rolex says qualifying new watches purchased from an Official Rolex Jeweler receive a five-year international guarantee, subject to its conditions and exclusions. CHANEL’s U.S. warranty guidance says a five-year warranty applies to timepieces acquired from October 2022 onward, subject to proper use and proof of purchase at a boutique or authorized retailer. Before buying, establish who authenticated the watch, what was inspected, whether parts have been replaced or modified, what service was done and when, and who will honor any warranty. Ask for clear, recent photographs and written answers tied to the actual watch. A box, paperwork, or seller-applied “certified” badge is not a substitute for a named authentication process.
How does brand-certified pre-owned differ?
Brand-certified pre-owned is not simply another name for used. Rolex’s program, for example, covers qualifying second-hand Rolex watches at least two years old sold by participating Official Rolex Retailers. Rolex says program watches return to its workshops for authentication and service and receive a two-year international guarantee. Certification has boundaries. Rolex notes that some of the oldest certified models are exceptions to its “perform like new” statement with respect to water resistance and original precision. Ask what the certification means for the exact watch rather than assuming every performance attribute is identical to a new model. Rolex’s guidance also states that only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch; that is the brand’s position about its own watches, not a general rule for every brand. How to compare two specific offers
- Write down the exact reference and configuration. Match the model, size, material, dial, and other relevant details so you are not comparing unlike watches.
- Identify the seller. Verify whether the seller is authorized or, for a brand program, listed as a participating retailer. Establish who is actually responsible for the sale and any promises made.
- Get authentication and condition details in writing. Ask who authenticated the watch and by what process, and request information on originality, modifications, defects, and included items.
- Review the service record. Request available invoices or records, ask what work was performed and what parts were replaced, and find out who can service the watch in the future.
- Read the warranty and return terms. Note the issuer, duration, coverage, exclusions, claim process, return window, and any inspection deadline before you pay.
- Compare the total cost. Include the purchase price and any service you reasonably expect to need. Do not assume a general pre-owned discount or a universal service cost.
When should you pause or walk away?
- The seller will not say who authenticated the watch or what was checked.
- The condition, service history, or originality is unclear, and the seller will not provide useful details.
- The warranty issuer, coverage, or exclusions cannot be explained in writing.
- Return conditions or inspection deadlines are vague or unacceptable to you.
- A claimed brand certification cannot be confirmed with the brand or participating retailer.
Why service belongs in the decision
Service is part of owning a mechanical watch, not just a pre-owned concern. Rolex recommends periodic professional servicing through an Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre to support continued accuracy and water resistance. The watch is evaluated, and an estimate is provided for approval before the work proceeds.
