Neither movement is automatically cheaper over its lifetime: service prices, intervals, parts, complications, and local costs vary. Compare the specifications and care guidance for the exact watches you are considering.
How do mechanical and quartz watches differ?
A mechanical watch runs on energy stored in a wound mainspring. A manual model needs winding by hand; an automatic model winds itself as the wearer moves, though it may stop if left unworn or insufficiently wound. A quartz watch uses an electronic oscillator regulated by a quartz crystal. Battery-powered quartz models need battery replacement, but not routine winding.

These design differences shape the everyday trade-off: quartz is usually the lower-intervention choice, while mechanical ownership involves more interaction and movement-specific care. Neither label alone tells you a watch’s accuracy, service cost, or durability.
Which type is more accurate?
Quartz generally offers greater accuracy, but the useful comparison is between the stated specifications of two particular watches—not a universal number for each movement type.

Manufacturer figures are examples, not guarantees
Baume & Mercier gives an illustrative comparison of about 1–2 seconds per week for quartz and 1–2 minutes per week for mechanical watches. Those are the brand’s examples, not specifications for every watch. Its FAQ also identifies shocks, aging oils, major temperature changes, magnetic fields, and wearer activity as factors that can affect mechanical precision. Baume & Mercier’s accuracy FAQ
Mechanical accuracy is commonly stated as a mean daily rate. The actual rate can shift with winding state, wearing conditions, temperature, position, and shocks. Seiko advises judging its mechanical watches over a week or ten days rather than drawing conclusions from a single day. Seiko’s FAQ
Certification and calibre targets have specific scopes
Grand Seiko’s 2025 manual sets targets for the mechanical calibres it covers, generally −1 to +10 seconds per day, with different targets for named calibres. It explains that winding, temperature, orientation, and gravity affect rate and recommends assessing accuracy over a week to ten days. These are Grand Seiko targets, not a standard for other brands. Breitling describes COSC testing as a 15-day process across positions and temperatures. Under the criteria it cites, maximum average deviations are −4/+6 seconds per day for mechanical watches and ±0.07 seconds per day for quartz watches. These are certification tolerances, not a promise of everyday performance. Breitling says all current Breitling watches are COSC-certified; that statement applies to its range, not watches generally. What routine care does each movement need?
| Care task | Mechanical | Quartz |
|---|---|---|
| Routine owner involvement | Wind a manual watch; keep an automatic sufficiently wound through wear or winding. | No routine winding for a battery-powered model; replace its battery when needed. |
| Periodic movement care | Follow the maker’s recommendation for inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and any adjustment or overhaul. | Battery service is common, but the maker may also recommend checks or full service depending on the model and condition. |
| Water resistance | Model-specific. Follow the watch’s manual and service guidance; water resistance and seal condition should be checked in light of the watch’s use. | |
Winding and power reserve
Patek Philippe advises winding its manually wound watches preferably every morning. It gives a 38–48-hour power reserve for its self-winding movements, with exceptions for specific models, and says a stopped watch can be restarted with a few gentle crown turns. These are Patek Philippe instructions; check the guidance for your own watch. Patek Philippe’s care guidance

Seiko recommends daily winding—even for a self-winding watch—to provide sufficient energy and help stabilize accuracy. That is Seiko’s advice, not a universal requirement for every automatic movement. Seiko’s FAQ
Batteries and water resistance
Patek Philippe says batteries in its quartz movements last two to three years and recommends replacement through an authorized retailer. Baume & Mercier warns against leaving an exhausted battery in the watch because leakage can damage the movement; it recommends certified battery replacement with water-resistance and movement checks. Battery type and replacement needs depend on the specific watch. Patek Philippe’s care guidance · Baume & Mercier’s FAQ

Water resistance is a property of the particular watch and its condition, not simply its movement type. Patek Philippe advises avoiding shocks, prolonged vibration, extreme temperature changes, and magnetic fields, and recommends an official service center or authorized retailer for demagnetization. Follow the manual for your model and arrange water-resistance checks according to its guidance and your use. Patek Philippe’s care guidance
How often do watches need service?
There is no movement-wide service interval. Manufacturer recommendations differ, including between brands that make both movement types.
| Brand guidance | Recommended interval | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Patek Philippe | Every eight to ten years | Its quartz and mechanical watches. |
| Seiko | Every three years | Examination, cleaning, and oiling for mechanical watches. |
| Baume & Mercier | Every three to five years; five to seven years for Baumatic | Full service; it also recommends an annual water-resistance check. |
| Breitling | Maintenance service every two years; complete service every four to six years | Breitling’s maintenance and complete-service guidance. |
These are the named manufacturers’ recommendations, not a schedule that applies to every watch. Check the current manual or service guidance for the exact model, especially if it has complications or is used in conditions that may affect its seals or movement. What does watch service cost?
Official prices show how much the answer depends on the brand, model, service scope, and market. The examples below are not a market-wide comparison or a lifetime-cost estimate.
| Official price example | Quartz | Mechanical | Price basis and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| LONGINES, listed two- or three-hand models with calendar | CHF 230 | CHF 350 | Full service; public prices include tax. Battery service only is listed at CHF 30. Other models, including chronographs and complications, have different prices. |
| Patek Philippe | CHF 600 | CHF 900 manual; CHF 1,000 self-winding | Maximum listed prices for full service, excluding tax. Complications cost more; additional components may be charged separately. |
LONGINES distinguishes partial from full service and notes that additional components may cost extra. Patek Philippe describes full service as including disassembly, inspection, worn-part replacement, cleaning, reassembly, lubrication, adjustment, and testing; additional components may also be charged separately. Patek Philippe lists battery changes as free at authorized points of sale. LONGINES service prices · Patek Philippe service prices and scope
Service menus may also vary by country and provider. Tissot’s US service page separates light, partial, and complete service, notes that shipping is not included, and says recommended third-party prices may differ. A quote is meaningful only when you know what work it covers and where it applies. Tissot’s US service information
The cited prices do not establish that quartz is always cheaper to own. A fair lifetime comparison would need the actual watches’ purchase prices, local battery and service charges, expected schedule, parts needs, warranty, and chosen service route.
Which movement fits your priorities?
- Choose quartz if you prioritize precise, low-intervention everyday timekeeping and do not want to wind a watch routinely. Include battery replacement and any model-specific service in your care plan.
- Choose mechanical if you value a watch powered by a wound mainspring and accept winding or regular wear, greater variation in daily rate, and periodic movement care.
Before choosing between particular models, compare their stated accuracy and test conditions, battery or winding requirements, expected service work and local cost, warranty, and water-resistance needs. A service price from one luxury brand is not a reliable proxy for the total cost of a different watch.
