To compare affordable analog watches, judge each one on three measurable points: how the movement is powered and maintained, which materials make up the case and crystal, and what the water-resistance rating actually allows you to do. Fit and legibility come next. For most budget buyers, a quartz or solar quartz movement, a stainless steel case, and a water rating matched to real activities give the best value. Automatic movements are a legitimate choice, but they are a preference for mechanical operation that brings higher cost and periodic servicing.
This guide does not rank specific models or quote current prices, because those change and vary by retailer. It explains what to check on any listing so you can compare candidates like for like.
Start with the movement: what you will have to maintain
The movement decides how the watch is powered, how often it needs attention, and how closely it keeps time. Three movement types cover most affordable analog watches.
Quartz
A quartz movement runs on a battery and is the low-maintenance default. Nixon’s first-time analog watch guide, dated June 24, 2026, describes quartz watches as typically accurate, low-maintenance and more affordable, with most needing a battery change every few years. That interval is the guide’s general description, not a guarantee for any specific model.

Solar quartz
Solar quartz is still a quartz movement, but it charges from light rather than relying only on a replaceable cell. According to the same Nixon guide, it can reduce or remove routine battery changes. Check that the model’s dial or specification sheet names the solar charging system, and confirm how much light it needs to stay charged if you wear it under sleeves or in dim offices.
Automatic (mechanical)
An automatic movement has no battery. It is powered by the motion of your wrist, which winds a mainspring. Nixon’s guide presents this as the mechanical appeal of the design, but notes it costs more and requires periodic servicing. Swatch’s technical information says its automatic movement is less precise than quartz and publishes a daily deviation range for each model. That range is specific to that model; it should not be treated as a figure for all automatic watches.
Movement comparison
| Movement | Power source | Routine upkeep | Accuracy | Price position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quartz | Replaceable battery | Battery change, typically every few years (Nixon guide, June 24, 2026) | Typically accurate (Nixon guide) | More affordable (Nixon guide) |
| Solar quartz | Light charging | Can reduce or remove routine battery changes (Nixon guide) | Not stated for solar models in the Nixon guide; check the model’s specification | Not stated in the Nixon guide |
| Automatic | Wrist motion, no battery | Periodic servicing (Nixon guide) | Less precise than quartz (Swatch technical information); model-specific daily deviation range published by the maker | More expensive than quartz (Nixon guide) |
If you want the least upkeep and the most accuracy for the money, quartz is the simpler choice. If you want a mechanical watch and accept servicing as part of ownership, an automatic is a deliberate trade, not a value pick.
Case and crystal: two separate components
Listings often blur the case, the crystal, and the finish. Compare them separately. The case material determines weight, corrosion resistance and how the finish holds up. The crystal is the transparent cover over the dial, and it determines scratch resistance.

Case materials
| Case material | Characteristics (Nixon guide) | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Tough, relatively affordable, resistant to everyday corrosion | Heavier than titanium; the common baseline at this price level |
| Titanium | Lighter | Generally more expensive |
| Plated alloy | Finish over a base metal | The plating may wear over time, exposing the base |
Crystal materials
| Crystal | Characteristics (Nixon guide) | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic | Resists shattering | Scratches easily |
| Mineral glass | A middle ground | Between acrylic and sapphire on both counts |
| Sapphire | Premium, scratch-resistant | Usually the highest cost of the three |
These are general buyer-guide descriptions rather than laboratory test results. Sapphire describes the crystal, not the case, so a “sapphire” watch can still have a steel, titanium or plated case.
Checking the listing
- Confirm the case material and the crystal material are named separately.
- Treat vague wording such as “premium glass” or “hardened crystal” as unverified until the product page or manual names the material.
- Check whether a plated finish is described as plated or as solid metal.
- Treat a premium material label as one input, not as proof of overall quality.
Straps change comfort and water suitability
The strap affects how the watch sits on the wrist and how it handles moisture. Nixon’s guide describes three common options:
- Leather: a classic office or casual choice. It eventually needs replacement, and it is less tolerant of water than steel or rubber.
- Steel: versatile, and more tolerant of sweat and water than untreated leather.
- Rubber or silicone: useful for water, sports and hotter climates.
If you plan to buy an aftermarket strap, confirm the lug width and attachment design for your exact model before ordering. A strap that fits the wrong lug width will not sit properly and can work loose.
Water resistance: what the rating permits
Water-resistance ratings are the most misunderstood part of a watch spec sheet. The number on the dial or caseback is a test pressure, and it is not a depth you can safely reach.

How the marking is defined
Casio states that its water resistance follows DIN 8310 and ISO 22810, and that the metre marking on its watches is a pictorial representation of test pressure. It is not permission to use the watch at that depth. Water in motion can also create dynamic pressure greater than the static pressure used in testing, so a watch rated for a given pressure in still water may not tolerate the same pressure while you swim, dive or wash under a tap.
Rating-to-activity guide
The following categories come from Casio’s water-resistance guidance chart. Other manufacturers use their own wording, so follow the model documentation.
| Marking or category | Test pressure | Casio’s guidance for use |
|---|---|---|
| Water Resistant | Not given in the chart | Splashes and rain |
| 5 bar | 5 bar | Bathing, washing and showering |
| 10 bar | 10 bar | Swimming and snorkelling |
| 20 bar | 20 bar | Free-diving without equipment |
Choose the lowest rating that covers your real activities, with a margin for the dynamic pressure described above. A watch rated for splashes is not a swimming watch, and a watch rated for swimming is not a diving watch.
Seals, gaskets and care
Water resistance depends on seals, and seals age. Casio’s water-resistance page states: “In principle, water resistance according to DIN 8310 and ISO 22810 is not a permanent characteristic, since existing seals naturally wear with age.” The page is Casio Europe’s “Water resistance | Technology — Watches.”

Casio’s support FAQ adds these precautions:
- Ordinary water-resistant models are not for scuba diving.
- Do not operate the crown or buttons while the watch is submerged or wet.
- Avoid baths, hot pools and saunas.
- Rinse salt water and dirt off after swimming in the sea.
- Have the gaskets replaced periodically. The FAQ suggests about every two or three years for its general water-resistant watches and every two years for its diver’s watches. These are Casio’s guidance intervals for its own models, not a universal service schedule.
Fit, size and legibility
A watch that is technically well specified but uncomfortable will not get worn. Nixon’s guide recommends weighing wrist fit, case diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness and weight. It gives 38–42 mm as a general mid-range case diameter for many first-time buyers and roughly 48 mm as a lug-to-lug guideline. These are heuristics from a brand-authored buyer guide, not industry standards, and fit varies by wrist and design.
Check whether the lugs overhang the edge of your wrist, whether the watch fits under a shirt cuff, and whether it feels acceptable at the weight listed. On the dial, favour high contrast and clear hands and markers over complications you will not use.
A side-by-side method for comparing candidates
- List the activities you do most, such as office wear, gym sessions, swimming or outdoor work, and note which of them involve water.
- Choose a movement type based on how much upkeep you accept: quartz for the least, solar quartz to reduce battery changes, automatic if you want mechanical operation and will pay for servicing.
- Record the case material and crystal material for each candidate, separately, from the product page or manual.
- Match the water-resistance marking to the lowest category that covers your activities, using the guidance table above.
- Check the case diameter and lug-to-lug length against your wrist, and confirm the strap type and lug width.
- Verify every specification on the manufacturer’s current product page or in the model manual before you buy, because designs and documentation differ between models and change over time.
Bottom line
There is no single best movement or material independent of budget, activities and maintenance preference. For most buyers on a budget, a quartz or solar quartz movement, a stainless steel case, a crystal named on the spec sheet and a water rating matched to real use give the most watch for the money. Choose an automatic only when the mechanical operation and periodic servicing are the point of the purchase.
