Compare a new watch across three separate questions: how its movement works, how its full case dimensions may fit, and what its water-resistance marking actually supports. A larger reserve, smaller diameter, or higher depth figure is not automatically better; the useful choice depends on your priorities and the maker’s stated specifications.
Start with specifications, not a single score
For each release, record the movement type and caliber, the diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug measurement when published, and the exact water-resistance marking. Note the source, date and market for each figure: specifications and product availability can change, and a manufacturer’s stated feature is not the same as an independent test.

The 2026 Prospex Marinemaster illustrates how to apply this method. Seiko’s 18 March 2026 US-market release describes it as the first continuous-production Prospex watch powered by the 8L45 movement. The release lists a 72-hour power reserve, a stated rate tolerance of +10 to -5 seconds per day, and 300 m diver’s water resistance. These are Seiko-published specifications, not independent test results; Seiko says specifications and price information may change. Seiko’s release does not provide the case dimensions in the cited material, so they should not be inferred from the water rating or model name.

Identify whether the movement is mechanical, automatic, quartz or another type, then capture its caliber name if the maker provides one. Those labels describe how a watch is powered; they do not, by themselves, establish which watch will suit you best. Compare the practical details the manufacturer actually publishes, such as power reserve and stated rate tolerance, and keep the maker attribution beside the figures.

Power reserve
Power reserve describes how long a fully wound mechanical watch is specified to run without further winding. A longer published reserve can mean less frequent winding when the watch is off the wrist, but it is only one consideration; it does not establish accuracy, durability or performance under your use.
Stated rate tolerance
A rate tolerance is a maker’s stated allowance for how much time a movement may gain or lose under the conditions associated with that specification. Preserve the unit and the direction of the range: Seiko gives the 8L45 as +10 to -5 seconds per day. Do not turn a published tolerance into a claim that every individual watch will perform at one exact rate in daily wear.

Certification language needs the same care. Rolex says its 2026 Superlative Chronometer certification adds resistance to magnetism, reliability and durability criteria during design and manufacturing. It says these supplement existing criteria for precision, waterproofness, self-winding and autonomy, validated on finished watches. This is Rolex’s description of its own certification, not a cross-brand ranking or evidence that one maker’s watches outperform another’s. Rolex’s certification explanation sets out those claims.
Use all available case measurements to judge fit
Diameter alone does not tell you how a watch will wear. Thickness affects how tall it sits, while lug-to-lug length describes the span across the wrist. A watch with a modest diameter can still feel large if it is thick or has long lugs; case shape and personal preference matter too.

Compare the published dimensions with a watch you already wear and like, or try the new watch on if possible. There is no universal wrist-size cutoff established by the specifications cited here. If a manufacturer has not published a dimension, treat it as unknown rather than estimating it from a photograph or another model.
Read water resistance as a tested marking, not a depth promise
Record the precise marking and the manufacturer’s stated intended use. Do not read a number such as “30 m” as permission to take the watch to that literal depth. ISO’s explanation of the 30 m example cautions against that interpretation; a marking belongs to a specified test and marking framework, not an automatic guarantee of safe use at the corresponding depth. For diving, check whether the maker explicitly identifies the watch as a diver’s watch and states the relevant designation. Seiko calls the Marinemaster’s 300 m rating “diver’s water resistance” in its release; that wording is more informative than treating the number alone as a general activity guide. Do not translate a rating into swimming, snorkeling or diving advice unless the manufacturer’s guidance or a relevant diver’s-watch standard supports it.
ISO describes ISO 22810:2010 as setting requirements and test methods for verifying water resistance and indicating markings manufacturers are authorized to apply. ISO reports that the 2010 edition was confirmed in 2021; its lifecycle also lists a 2026 review step proposing revision. The cited page does not establish whether a revision has since been adopted, so check its status when relying on the edition. The existence of a standard explains a framework for markings; it does not make every maker’s product claim an independent comparative test.

Build a fair comparison before choosing
- Fix the comparison context. Record the release date and the market covered by the source, and make clear whether each claim comes from a manufacturer or an independent test.
- Write down movement details. Include type, caliber, published reserve and stated rate tolerance, with the maker’s units and qualifications intact.
- Compare the complete case profile. Put diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug side by side where available, then compare with a watch you know or arrange a try-on.
- Copy the water marking exactly. Add the manufacturer’s intended-use language and any stated diver-watch designation; do not turn the marking into a depth guarantee.
- Separate facts from preference. Decide which characteristics matter for your routine instead of treating the biggest number or most elaborate certification as a universal winner.
Applied to the cited Marinemaster release, this yields a well-specified movement and water-resistance description, but not a complete fit comparison from the cited information because its case dimensions are not given there. That distinction keeps the comparison useful without filling gaps with assumptions.
