Yes—Fitbit devices can connect to compatible Samsung Galaxy phones. Install the current Google Health (Fitbit) app from Google Play, sign in with the Google Account associated with your Fitbit account, then add the device from inside the app—not from Samsung’s Bluetooth settings alone.

This guide covers the current app name, permissions, Samsung battery settings, manual syncing, notifications, moving a Fitbit to a new Galaxy phone, and the fixes that resolve most pairing problems. As of May 2026, Google has begun transitioning the Fitbit app to the name Google Health, so you may see “Google Health” in the Play Store and app drawer even though your tracker or watch is still a Fitbit.

Before you start: check compatibility

A Samsung Galaxy phone running Android 11 or later is compatible in principle with the current Google Health app. Compatibility is not universal across every Galaxy model, however. Specific phone models, One UI versions, Fitbit models, account status, permissions, and regional feature availability can affect the result.

Google’s app transition began on May 19, 2026, and rolled out to most users between May 19 and May 26. Existing Fitbit devices remain supported, but the app may now be labeled Google Health (Fitbit). If you have a Fitbit-only account, the app may require you to move to a Google Account before you can continue using the redesigned experience.

Before buying a new tracker, remember that no particular Fitbit model is required for Samsung compatibility. If you are choosing a device, the Fitbit Charge 6 fitness tracker is one current option, but the connection process depends on the phone, app, permissions, and Fitbit model—not on the Charge 6 specifically.

What you need before pairing

  • A Samsung Galaxy phone running Android 11 or newer.
  • A charged Fitbit tracker or watch, preferably connected to its charger during initial setup.
  • The latest version of Google Health (Fitbit) from Google Play.
  • Bluetooth enabled on the Galaxy phone.
  • Wi-Fi or mobile data for account access, setup, synchronization, and firmware updates.
  • The Fitbit close to the phone—ideally within a few feet during setup.
  • Access to the Google Account used for your Fitbit data.

Fitbit devices communicate with Android phones using Bluetooth Low Energy. Bluetooth handles the nearby connection, while the app uses an internet connection to transfer information to your account and download updates.

How to connect your Fitbit to a Samsung phone

  1. Update the Galaxy phone. Install any available Android or One UI updates before pairing. An outdated phone can cause permission, Bluetooth, or app-compatibility problems.
  2. Install or update the app. Open Google Play Store and search for Google Health (Fitbit). The listing is published by Google LLC. Users searching for “Fitbit” may still find it because the package and Fitbit branding are being transitioned rather than replaced outright.
  3. Open Google Health and sign in. Use the Google Account connected to your Fitbit account. If the app presents an account-migration prompt, follow the on-screen steps before trying to add the device.
  4. Charge the Fitbit. Keep it on its charger and next to the Samsung phone while setup begins. A critically low battery can prevent discovery or interrupt a firmware update.
  5. Start setup inside Google Health. Open the device or connections area, choose the option to add or set up a Fitbit device, and select your model when prompted. Do not use the Galaxy phone’s Bluetooth screen as the primary setup method.
  6. Approve permissions. Allow Nearby devices access and, when requested, Location access. Depending on the Fitbit model and optional features, Google Health may also request notification, phone, SMS, calendar, microphone, or physical-activity permissions.
  7. Complete pairing and updates. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions. If a firmware update is offered, keep the Fitbit near the phone, leave Bluetooth enabled, and avoid closing the app or powering off either device.
  8. Allow background operation. After pairing, configure Google Health so Samsung’s battery-management tools do not put it to sleep. This is essential for automatic synchronization, connected GPS, phone notifications, and some firmware updates.

Permissions Samsung and Google Health need

Nearby devices

On current Android versions, Google Health needs Nearby devices permission to discover and communicate with the Fitbit. If you denied it during setup, open the Galaxy phone’s app-permission settings, select Google Health, and allow Nearby devices.

Location Services and Location permission

Turn on the phone’s Location Services and allow Google Health to use Location when required. Android uses location-related permissions for Bluetooth discovery and connected-GPS functions; this does not mean that every Fitbit feature is a location-tracking feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Location is disabled, the Fitbit may fail to connect, update its clock, or provide connected GPS even though other functions appear normal.

Notifications

For calls, messages, and app alerts on a compatible Fitbit, complete pairing through Google Health and grant notification access when prompted. Some Android versions also require an Android notification-widget setting. Notification support varies by Fitbit model, phone, Android release, and app, so a successful connection does not guarantee that every notification type will be available.

Prevent Samsung from stopping Fitbit sync

The most common Samsung-specific problem is not pairing—it is background restriction. The Fitbit may work while Google Health is open but stop syncing or delivering notifications after the app is closed.

Allow background data

On the Galaxy phone, look for a path similar to:

Settings > Apps > Google Health > Mobile data or Mobile data and Wi-Fi

  • Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[7]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)

Enable Background data. If shown, also enable Unrestricted mobile data usage. Menu names vary by Galaxy model and One UI version.

Remove Google Health from sleeping apps

Samsung can place infrequently used apps into Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps. Remove Google Health from those lists. Also check the app’s battery setting under a path similar to:

Settings > Apps > Google Health > Battery

Choose Unrestricted or the equivalent option that permits background activity.

Temporarily disable Power saving while testing

Samsung’s Power saving mode can limit background data, location services, and app activity. Turn it off temporarily while diagnosing delayed sync or missing notifications. You can turn it back on later, but Google Health may need to be exempted if the problem returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to confirm that the Fitbit is connected

  1. Keep the Fitbit near the Galaxy phone.
  2. Open Google Health.
  3. Check the connected-device details for the Fitbit’s battery level, firmware version, and last synchronization time.
  4. Open the Today tab and pull down on the screen to start a manual sync. In some app layouts, you can instead open Connections and select Sync.

A successful manual sync should refresh the last-synced time and update recent health or activity statistics. Automatic synchronization normally occurs throughout the day, with another sync when Google Health is opened while the Fitbit is nearby.

Troubleshooting: Fitbit will not connect to a Samsung phone

If the Fitbit is not found during setup

  1. Charge the Fitbit and place it next to the Galaxy phone.
  2. Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled.
  3. Turn on Location Services.
  4. Check that Google Health has Nearby devices and Location permission.
  5. Make sure setup was started inside Google Health, not only from Samsung Settings.
  6. Turn Bluetooth off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
  7. Restart the Fitbit and restart the Galaxy phone.
  8. Try the add-device process again inside Google Health.

If the Fitbit appears in Bluetooth but will not pair in Google Health

A Fitbit can appear in Samsung’s Bluetooth list without completing Fitbit setup. Open the Galaxy phone’s Bluetooth or Connected devices settings, select the old Fitbit entry, and choose Forget or Unpair. Then restart both devices and begin again from Google Health.

Also check other nearby phones and tablets. A Fitbit previously connected to another device—especially one signed in to the same account—can interfere with the new connection. Turn off Bluetooth on the old device or remove the Fitbit’s pairing there before retrying.

If syncing works only when Google Health is open

This almost always points to Samsung background restrictions. Check all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Google Health has Background data enabled.
  • Unrestricted mobile data usage is enabled if the option exists.
  • Google Health is not in Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps.
  • Google Health’s battery setting is Unrestricted.
  • Power saving is disabled while testing.
  • Bluetooth and Location Services remain enabled.

Background restrictions can delay or prevent automatic sync, connected GPS, phone notifications, and firmware updates.

If manual sync fails

  1. Keep the Fitbit close to the phone.
  2. Verify Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  3. Toggle Bluetooth off, wait approximately 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
  4. Restart the Galaxy phone and Fitbit.
  5. Update Android, Google Health, and the Fitbit’s firmware if an update is available.
  6. Forget stale Fitbit Bluetooth entries and retry setup from Google Health.
  7. Only after these steps, consider uninstalling and reinstalling Google Health.

Before reinstalling, verify that the phone still meets the Android 11-or-newer requirement. An older unsupported Galaxy phone may not be able to reinstall or use the current app properly.

If the Fitbit shows the wrong time

An incorrect clock is usually a synchronization problem. Sync the Fitbit with Google Health so it can receive current time information. If the time remains wrong:

  • Check the time-zone setting in Google Health.
  • Open the Galaxy phone’s date and time settings.
  • Enable automatic date, time, and time-zone settings where available.
  • Run another manual sync with the Fitbit nearby.

Moving a Fitbit to a new Samsung Galaxy phone

Your Fitbit data is stored in the cloud, so changing phones should not erase the account’s historical data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the new Galaxy phone, install Google Health (Fitbit) from Google Play.
  2. Sign in with the same Google Account used on the old phone.
  3. Accept the required Nearby devices, Location, and other feature-specific permissions.
  4. Start the device-connection flow inside Google Health.
  5. If the Fitbit still appears tied to the old phone, turn off Bluetooth on the old phone or forget the Fitbit entry there.
  6. Complete pairing and allow the Fitbit to sync.

You generally do not need to factory-reset the Fitbit simply because you changed phones. Resetting the device or removing it from the account should be a later step, not the opening move.

Charging and useful Fitbit accessories

The Fitbit must have enough power to complete setup and firmware updates. If the original cable is lost or damaged, a Fitbit Charge 6, Charge 5 and Luxe charging cable is a relevant replacement option for owners of those models. Confirm the exact model before ordering: Fitbit charging cables are not universally interchangeable, and the cable does not include the tracker.

After the connection is working, a Fitbit Charge 6 replacement band can be useful for comfort or exercise, but a replacement band has no effect on Bluetooth pairing or sync. Check whether the band is specifically listed for Charge 6, Charge 5, or another Fitbit model before buying.

What can vary even when the phone is compatible?

“Works with a Samsung phone” means the basic app and connection are supported; it does not mean every feature works identically on every Galaxy phone. Differences can result from:

Some Google Health features and premium services vary by country and may require an internet connection or subscription. Treat model-specific feature lists—especially notification, GPS, health, and safety features—as separate from basic Samsung compatibility.

What not to do first

  • Do not factory-reset the Fitbit immediately. Check charging, permissions, stale pairings, updates, restarts, and background restrictions first.
  • Do not rely on Samsung Bluetooth pairing alone. Fitbit setup must be completed from Google Health.
  • Do not assume the app is missing because “Fitbit” is not displayed. Search Google Play for Google Health (Fitbit).
  • Do not promise universal feature support. The exact Fitbit model and Galaxy configuration matter.
  • Do not install PC repair or driver software for this problem. Android-to-Fitbit pairing does not require Windows driver utilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any Fitbit connect to a Samsung Galaxy phone?

Most Fitbit devices can connect to a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone running Android 11 or later, but exact support and individual features vary by Fitbit model, Galaxy model, Android or One UI version, permissions, and region.

Why is the Fitbit app called Google Health?

Google began transitioning the Fitbit app to Google Health in May 2026. You may see Google Health (Fitbit) in Google Play and Google Health in the app drawer while existing Fitbit devices continue to be supported.

Should I pair my Fitbit from Samsung Bluetooth settings?

No. Bluetooth must be enabled, but start and complete the Fitbit connection from inside Google Health. If an old Fitbit entry is already listed in Samsung Bluetooth settings, forget or unpair it before trying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Fitbit sync only when the app is open?

Samsung is probably restricting Google Health in the background. Enable background data, set the app’s battery use to Unrestricted, remove it from Sleeping apps, and temporarily disable Power saving while testing.

Will changing Samsung phones erase my Fitbit data?

No. Fitbit data is stored in the cloud. Install Google Health on the new phone, sign in with the same Google Account, grant permissions, and pair the Fitbit again.

The Bottom Line

For the most reliable Samsung-Fitbit connection, use a Galaxy phone on Android 11 or newer, install Google Health (Fitbit), begin setup inside the app, grant Nearby devices and Location permissions, and prevent Samsung battery controls from putting the app to sleep. If pairing fails, remove stale Bluetooth entries and restart both devices before considering a reinstall or reset.
