How to Control an Apple Watch from Your iPhone: What You Can Do

The iPhone can manage most Apple Watch settings, but live screen control uses Apple Watch Mirroring. Learn what each feature can do and how to pair, manage, back up, or unpair a watch.

You can manage most Apple Watch settings from the paired iPhone using the Apple Watch app. To see and operate the watch’s live screen on the iPhone, use Apple Watch Mirroring under Settings → Accessibility. These are different tools: the Watch app configures the watch; it is not a universal remote, and Mirroring availability depends on the watch model and software.

What can you control from an iPhone?

What you want to do iPhone feature or path What it does
Change watch settings Apple Watch app → My Watch Configure many watch preferences, including display, sound, passcode, and accessibility options.
Set up a face and complications Apple Watch app → Face Gallery Customize a face and add it to the watch.
Manage alerts Apple Watch app → My Watch → Notifications Choose how supported apps send notifications to the watch.
Manage watch apps Apple Watch app → My Watch Show, hide, or remove supported apps.
Operate the live watch screen iPhone Settings → Accessibility → Apple Watch Mirroring Show the watch display on the iPhone and interact with it, if supported.
Manage a family member’s watch Apple Watch app → All Watches → Family Watches Adjust available settings for a watch set up for a family member.
Pair, restore, or unpair Apple Watch app → All Watches Start setup, select a watch, or unpair it.
Locate or erase a missing watch Find My Use security and recovery tools; it does not provide live screen control.

Paths and labels can vary slightly with iOS and watchOS versions, language, and region. Apple’s watch settings guide describes the current Watch app and its settings search field.

Use the Apple Watch app to manage your watch

Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone paired with the watch, then tap My Watch. This is the main place to configure watch preferences, notifications, apps, passcode behavior, and supported cellular settings. If you cannot find a setting, use the search field in My Watch; menu organization can change between releases.

If you have more than one watch, tap All Watches to select one. A watch must normally be paired with the iPhone for this management relationship. Keep Bluetooth enabled and the devices connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data when setup or synchronization requires a network connection.

Change watch faces from the iPhone

  1. Open the Apple Watch app.
  2. Tap Face Gallery.
  3. Choose a face, then adjust its available style, color, and complications.
  4. Tap Add to Watch.

Face Gallery is for building and sending faces to the watch; it is not a live view of the watch. To interact with the watch interface from the iPhone, use Apple Watch Mirroring instead. Apple’s watch settings guide and watchOS 26 overview describe the current Face Gallery, including its grouped collections.

Manage notifications

Go to Apple Watch app → My Watch → Notifications. For supported apps, choose options such as Mirror my iPhone, Allow Notifications, Send to Notification Center, or Notifications Off. Available choices depend on the app.

Notifications are generally routed to either the iPhone or the watch, not duplicated on both. When the iPhone is unlocked, alerts generally appear there; when it is locked or asleep, they generally go to the watch unless the watch is locked. Check the Watch app’s notification settings as well as the iPhone app’s settings if an alert is missing. Apple explains the routing behavior in its guide to notifications on iPhone and Apple Watch.

Install, hide, or delete watch apps

In the Apple Watch app, open My Watch and look under Installed on Apple Watch. For supported apps, you can turn off Show App on Apple Watch or remove the watch app. Reinstall apps through the App Store when available. Removing an app from the iPhone can also remove its Apple Watch counterpart, and not every built-in app can be deleted. See Apple’s instructions for deleting apps from Apple Watch.

Change display, sound, security, and accessibility settings

The Watch app can configure many preferences without navigating the small watch screen. Look under My Watch for the relevant category; exact groupings may change by software version.

  • Appearance and accessibility: Adjust text size, bold text, Zoom, VoiceOver, Reduce Motion, orientation, and other available display preferences.
  • Sound and touch: Configure volume, alert sounds, haptics, Silent Mode, and Prominent Haptic where available.
  • Passcode and unlocking: To use iPhone-based unlocking, go to My Watch → Passcode → Unlock with iPhone. Passcode protections still apply.
  • Health and safety: Use the iPhone to configure supported health notifications, personal information, and emergency-related settings. A setting or reading is not a substitute for medical advice or diagnosis.

If you forget the watch passcode, the iPhone cannot bypass it. Apple’s passcode and lock guidance says the watch must be erased and paired again; Activation Lock may still require the associated Apple Account.

Control the live watch screen with Apple Watch Mirroring

Apple Watch Mirroring displays the watch screen on the paired iPhone so you can interact with it there. Apple presents it as an accessibility feature, but a larger display can also help when the watch screen is difficult to use.

Turn on Mirroring

  1. On the paired iPhone, open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Apple Watch Mirroring and turn it on.
  4. Use the mirrored display to tap or swipe through supported watch screens and apps.

If you use Mirroring often, you can add it to the iPhone’s Accessibility Shortcut. Apple also documents input options such as Voice Control, Switch Control, head tracking, sound actions, and compatible external switches. See Apple’s iPhone Mirroring instructions.

Mirrored controls

  • Swipe up or down to scroll; swipe left or right to move between screens.
  • Tap the virtual Digital Crown or side button to press that control.
  • On Apple Watch Ultra models, tap the virtual Action button when available.
  • Touch and hold the virtual Digital Crown to use Siri.

Apple details these controls in its guide to controlling Apple Watch with iPhone. Mirroring is not a universal remote, does not bypass passcodes or Activation Lock, and does not make every watch model compatible. Apple’s regional support pages do not describe compatibility identically; check whether Apple Watch Mirroring appears in Accessibility on the paired iPhone and consult current Apple compatibility guidance for the specific watch and software.

Manage a family member’s Apple Watch

Apple’s current support material calls its family setup feature Apple Watch For Your Kids; some users and older material call it Family Setup. It allows a family member without their own iPhone to use a compatible cellular Apple Watch, while a parent or guardian can manage some settings.

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on the managing iPhone.
  2. Tap All Watches, then select the watch under Family Watches.
  3. Tap Done, then choose the setting to adjust.

Family management is not the same as pairing your own watch. Model and cellular requirements, Family Sharing roles, age restrictions for some health features, carrier support, and regional availability can affect what is offered. Some features that rely on a companion iPhone are unavailable. Apple lists setup details in its guide to setting up Apple Watch for a family member.

Pair a watch or restore from a backup

Pairing is usually done with the watch and iPhone together. Requirements depend on the watch model and software: for example, Apple lists an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later for Apple Watch Ultra 3, Series 11, and SE 3 running the corresponding current software. That is a model-specific requirement, not a universal rule for every Apple Watch. Check Apple’s setup requirements for your model.

  1. Turn on the watch by holding its side button until the Apple logo appears, then bring it near the iPhone.
  2. When prompted, tap Continue. If no prompt appears, open the Apple Watch app and tap All Watches → Add Watch or Pair New Watch, depending on the interface.
  3. Choose Set Up for Myself and follow the prompts. Center the animation in the iPhone’s viewfinder, or choose Pair Apple Watch Manually if camera pairing fails.
  4. Choose Set Up as New Apple Watch or restore from a previous backup, then follow the prompts for passcode, health preferences, wrist, and other settings.
  5. If the watch supports cellular, activate service during setup or later in the Watch app.

Apple’s pairing guide covers setup. A normally paired cellular watch generally uses the iPhone’s carrier; family-managed arrangements may differ. Carrier and cellular availability vary by country. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support ordinary connection and synchronization; cellular service can give supported models connectivity away from the iPhone, but it does not make every management function available regardless of connection.

Back up and transfer your watch

Apple Watch data is backed up automatically to the paired iPhone when the devices are near each other. An iPhone iCloud or computer backup also includes watch data, and unpairing creates a current watch backup intended for restoration or setup of a replacement. Backups can include app and system settings, face configuration, Home Screen layout, notification settings, Health and Fitness data, music synchronization settings, selected photo album, and time zone. Health and Fitness data requires iCloud backup or an encrypted computer backup for preservation; information that syncs through iCloud, such as Messages, is handled separately from the watch backup. See Apple’s Apple Watch backup guide.

When moving to a new iPhone, back up the old iPhone and follow Apple’s transfer process or the prompt to continue using the watch. If needed, unpair from the old iPhone and pair with the new one, restoring from the available backup. Do not erase the watch first unless the transfer process requires it.

Unpair, erase, or remove Activation Lock

For a sale, gift, or transfer, unpair the watch from the paired iPhone rather than merely erasing it on the watch. Unpairing erases the watch and removes Activation Lock after the owner confirms with their Apple Account. Erasing directly on the watch without the paired iPhone does not necessarily remove Activation Lock; the next owner will still need the previous owner to release it.

  1. Keep the iPhone and watch close together, then open the Apple Watch app.
  2. Tap My Watch → All Watches.
  3. Tap the information button next to the watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch.
  4. Confirm, choose whether to remove the cellular plan, and enter the Apple Account password when prompted to disable Activation Lock.

Apple’s pre-transfer checklist explains the process. If the watch has already been given away, Find My can be used to erase it, but the previous owner must still address Activation Lock. A buyer should ask the previous owner to remove the watch from their account before attempting setup.

What the iPhone cannot do

The Watch app does not show the watch’s live screen or control every app interaction. Some Control Center actions, direct app use, text entry, and hardware-specific controls are more practical or possible only on the watch. Mirroring offers screen interaction for supported devices, but does not remove model, connection, or security limits. Find My is for locating and protecting a device, not for operating its interface.

Troubleshoot common problems

Apple Watch Mirroring is missing

  • Confirm the watch appears in Watch → All Watches and is paired with this iPhone.
  • Check model and software compatibility; Mirroring is not available on every watch.
  • Keep the devices nearby, turn on Bluetooth, update both as far as their models allow, and restart them before checking Settings → Accessibility again.
  • Consider unpairing and pairing again only after confirming that a backup is available.

The pairing prompt does not appear

Open Watch → All Watches → Add Watch manually. If the watch already shows a normal watch face, it may be paired to another iPhone and may need to be erased before it can be set up again. Follow Apple’s setup instructions.

Camera pairing fails

Choose Pair Apple Watch Manually on the iPhone and follow the onscreen instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Notifications arrive on the wrong device or not at all

Check whether the iPhone is unlocked, whether the watch is locked or connected, the app’s Watch notification settings, the app’s own notification permission, and any active Focus settings. Alerts are generally routed between iPhone and watch rather than always duplicated. Apple’s notification guide explains the expected routing.

The passcode is forgotten or the watch belongs to someone else

A forgotten passcode cannot be bypassed from the iPhone; the watch must be erased and set up again, and Activation Lock may require the original Apple Account. For a second-hand watch, ask its previous owner to unpair it or remove Activation Lock. Apple’s guides cover watch passcodes and pairing and Activation Lock problems.
