To estimate when a Sturmanskie, Poljot, or Raketa was made, identify its movement calibre, record its markings and serial number, then compare the dial, case, and other parts with dated catalogues and documented examples. A serial number by itself rarely establishes an exact year. Treat the result as a likely period unless dated original paperwork or a clearly dated case stamp supports greater precision.
How to estimate a watch’s age
- Identify the movement and calibre. Dating references are often calibre-specific; do not apply one movement’s serial scheme to another calibre or brand.
- Record the markings and serial. Note the movement serial and any calibre or factory markings. If a marking is inside the case, have a watchmaker open the watch unless you already know how to do so safely. Opening a watch without experience can cause damage.
- Compare the whole watch with dated evidence. Check the dial, case, hands, and movement details against period catalogues or well-documented examples. A catalogue match is strongest when the movement and case details also fit.
- Look for original papers or service records. Dated documentation can support a narrower estimate than a collector-derived serial range.
- State the result as a range when evidence is incomplete. A serial estimate or visual resemblance is not the same as a documented production date.
When clues conflict, consider whether the watch was serviced with replacement parts, assembled later from components, or misidentified. A mixed set of features does not, by itself, prove that a watch is fake or original.
Dating a Poljot
Poljot 3017
For the 3017 chronograph, serial-based dating is a collector reconstruction from observations of surviving watches, not a known factory archive that maps each number to an exact production date. The serial is stamped on the movement, so accessing it requires opening the case. Use the estimate alongside the dial and case characteristics rather than treating the number as a standalone answer. Dumarko’s 3017 dating guide explains the method and its limits.
Poljot 3133
Serial formats and movement details can help narrow a 3133’s likely period, but the available specialist guidance describes the result as approximate. Servicing may leave components from different periods in the same watch, so one bridge stamp, serial, or other component is not conclusive. Compare the movement with the rest of the watch and use Soviet in Paris’s 3133 guide as one reference, not an exact-date lookup.

Use catalogues to check the configuration
Dated Poljot catalogues can help establish whether a design or configuration existed in a particular period. The Soviet Watch Museum’s catalogue index lists examples from 1965–67, 1977, 1979, and 1992. Because the index is a secondary archive, check the scanned catalogue itself before relying on a decisive detail.
Dating a Raketa
Raketa produced many different references during the Soviet period and through 2011, so there is no single serial-number shortcut established here for dating every vintage model. Its official retro catalogue notes that information about some older references may not be readily retrievable. Compare the watch’s full configuration with period catalogues rather than assuming a universal serial code.

The Soviet Watch Museum catalogue index includes Raketa catalogues from 1967, 1975, and 1992. Use those as leads to dated designs, and verify important comparisons against the catalogue scans where possible. Raketa’s manufacture page describes a modernisation programme launched in 2011 and current production capabilities; it provides modern production context, not a vintage serial-number key.
What Sturmanskie’s history can—and cannot—tell you
Sturmanskie’s official history says the First Moscow Watch Factory launched the series in 1949 under a special Soviet Air Force order, and that the watches were not initially sold to the public. That establishes historical context, not the date or military status of an individual watch. Later civilian, export, and modern branded models require their own identification. Establish the movement and reference, then compare the watch’s components with evidence for that specific model. Sturmanskie’s history describes the series’ origins.

How much confidence should you place in a date?
| Evidence | What it can support | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Dated original papers or a clearly dated case stamp | A more precise date, if the document or stamp can be tied to the watch | It does not automatically establish that every current component is original to the watch. |
| A dated catalogue match supported by matching movement and case details | That a configuration existed by the catalogue’s date, and a plausible production period | A design’s appearance in a catalogue does not prove the individual watch was made in that year. |
| Calibre-specific serial estimate | A likely period when the reference is based on the correct movement and a relevant dating guide | Collector estimates are not factory records and may not resolve an exact year. |
| One visual detail or isolated movement marking | A clue for further identification | Replacement parts, service, or misidentification can make a single feature misleading. |
Use the strongest evidence available and make the precision of the claim match it: “likely from the 1970s” is more defensible than an exact year derived from an uncertain serial estimate.
