Which options appear depends on your model. For most users, keeping the watch paired with Garmin Connect is the least hands-on route; Garmin Express is the alternative when you want to check for available updates over USB.
Choose an update method for your watch

Garmin does not publish one software version that applies to every watch. To check the current software information for your device, find the exact product in Garmin Support Center and open its Software tab.
Update through Garmin Connect
- Pair the watch with the phone in Garmin Connect and keep the devices connected.
- Allow Garmin Connect to download available software in the background.
- When the watch displays an installation prompt, follow it. Some models may install automatically instead.
Garmin says a Connect-downloaded update may take up to a week to arrive. A delay by itself does not mean the watch is broken. If no prompt appears after the download, check your model’s manual for its update behavior and menu options.
Update with Garmin Express on a computer
- Connect the watch to the computer with its USB charging cable. The connector varies by model; check the manual before buying a replacement cable.
- Open Garmin Express. If this is your first time using it on that computer, download and install the application first.
- Select the watch in Express, then choose Install or Install All for the available updates. Review any on-screen prompts.
- When the computer finishes, disconnect the watch. If prompted, choose Install Now or Install Tonight.
- If no prompt appears, or you deferred the installation, check the watch’s Settings > System > Software Update > Update Available menu. Wording or location can vary by model.
Garmin describes this as a way to check for and install available device software, not a guarantee that an update is ready for every watch each time you connect it. See Garmin’s Garmin Express software update instructions for the general process.

Update over Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi updating is available only on Garmin models with built-in Wi-Fi. Confirm your watch supports Wi-Fi and follow its manual for connecting to a network and syncing. Garmin’s Forerunner 955 software page illustrates why update instructions and software information are tied to a specific product; it is not a universal guide for other models.
Why hasn’t my Garmin watch received an update?
Garmin Connect downloads can take up to a week, and release timing and installation behavior depend on the device. If you want to see whether Express currently offers an update, connect the watch to a computer and check there. For model-specific release information, use the product’s Software tab in Garmin Support Center rather than relying on a version number reported for a different Garmin watch.

If Garmin Express reports an error while downloading, Garmin lists internet problems, the computer going to sleep, and insufficient free disk space among possible causes. It advises using a stable, high-speed connection. Some Express download cases may require up to 20 GB of free computer storage; this is a troubleshooting figure, not the size of a typical watch update or a universal requirement. Follow Garmin’s Express download and update error guidance for the stage that failed. A file-copy or installation error needs the relevant error-specific steps, not just download troubleshooting.

Software versions and release histories are model-specific and can change. Search for the exact watch or serial number in Garmin Support Center, then open the Software tab to see the information Garmin lists for that product. For example, Garmin provides separate software pages for the Forerunner 935 and Forerunner 955. Check the release date on your model’s page before deciding whether a version applies to your watch.
