To set a Timex Expedition, first identify whether your watch is an analog crown-set model or a digital button-set model, then follow the instructions for its exact model. On the analog models covered by Timex’s W225/M314 guide, the middle crown position sets the date and the fully-out position sets the time. Digital Expeditions use model-specific button sequences, so do not use the crown steps for them.
Before you start: identify your Expedition
Expedition watches do not all use the same controls or offer the same features. Find the model number on the case, or compare your watch’s dial and controls with the diagrams in its manual. Timex notes that a manual may describe features your particular watch does not have; the W162/M301 guide, for example, directs readers to its diagrams to identify the applicable model. - Look for a model number on the case and note whether the watch has an analog dial or a digital display.
- Find the matching instruction manual through Timex. Check that its diagrams and control layout match your watch before following a sequence.
- If it is analog, check whether it has a date window and a crown with separate setting positions. If it is digital or has different controls, skip to the digital-model guidance below.
Set an analog Expedition with a date window
The following sequence applies to the analog watches described in Timex’s W225/M314 guide. If your watch’s manual gives different directions, use that manual instead.
- Pull the crown to the middle position. On the documented models, this position is for setting the date.
- Turn the crown until the date is correct. Follow the direction specified in your own manual; it can vary by model.
- Pull the crown all the way out. This is the time-setting position on the W225/M314 models.
- Turn the crown to set the time. Account for whether the watch needs to show morning or afternoon.
- Check the AM/PM setting. Timex’s W225/M314 guide says: “Ensure correct AM/PM setting by verifying that date changes at midnight, not noon.” If the date advances around noon, move the hands forward by 12 hours.
- Push the crown back in when finished. The W225/M314 guide also says to adjust the date after months with fewer than 31 days.
These crown positions and steps are specified in Timex’s W225/M314 North America user guide; the W162/M301 guide likewise describes middle-position date setting and fully-out time setting for the watches it covers.

Check your manual for model-specific exceptions
Do not assume the date-turning direction or every caution is the same across Expedition models. Timex’s W-4 manual says that some watches covered by that manual require turning the crown counterclockwise to set the date. It also cautions against setting the time between 4 and 10 p.m. on watches with a date. Treat those as instructions for models covered by the W-4 manual, not as universal rules for every Expedition. Use the exact digital model’s manual rather than the analog crown sequence. Timex’s general setting guide describes digital watches as using controls such as Set or Mode to move between fields and another control to change values, but button names and sequences vary by model.
