As the Sun appears to move across the sky, the shadow shifts. This gives you a local solar-time estimate—not necessarily the time your watch would show.
Use a stick shadow for a rough estimate
- Find a sunny, level spot. The method depends on direct sunlight and a clearly visible shadow.
- Stand a straight stick upright. Keep it as vertical as you can, and note the direction and length of its shadow.
- Use the shadow as a changing reference. The Sun’s apparent movement makes the shadow change position during the day. If you have a known time to start from, mark the shadow then and compare its later position to estimate how much time has passed.
A single shadow reading does not tell you an exact clock time unless you have a calibrated reference. NASA Goddard explains the basic principle in The Sundial.
Read a sundial for solar time
A sundial uses a pointer, called a gnomon, to cast a shadow across marked lines on a dial face. The position of the shadow indicates solar time. A constructed or purchased sundial can be easier to read than an unmarked stick, but its design and setup must suit its location.
For the common design described in the International Astronomical Union’s Making a Sundial activity, the gnomon is oriented toward true north and set at an angle equal to the location’s latitude. Dial lines depend on latitude, and the dial must be adapted for the hemisphere. Follow the instructions for the specific design rather than assuming every sundial is set up the same way.

Why solar time may differ from clock time
A sundial follows the Sun, while a civil clock follows standardized time. The US Naval Observatory defines the equation of time as the variable part of the difference between time kept by an ordinary civil clock and time kept by the Sun. Longitude within a time zone and local conventions, including seasonal clock changes, can add further differences. The IAU activity notes that its example dial’s printed times need adjustment for local time conventions. So solar noon—the Sun’s highest point in the sky—does not necessarily coincide with 12:00 on a watch. See the USNO explanation of The Equation of Time.
What changes the shadow reading
- Season: The Sun follows a different apparent path through the sky at different times of year, changing the shadow’s direction and length. NASA cautions that a given shadow direction is not a universal time indicator.
- Location: Latitude and hemisphere affect sundial design and the Sun’s apparent path.
- Alignment and surface: A stick that is not vertical, an uneven surface, or a sundial that is not correctly aligned can make the reading misleading.
- Time standard: Solar time is not automatically local civil time; a dial’s markings may need location-specific adjustment.
For an educational demonstration, NASA’s Solar Clock Activity and the UK Met Office’s Make a sundial provide hands-on instructions. A stick and a sunny, level spot are enough to see the principle; a kit is optional.

When this method will not work
You need sunlight to get a dependable shadow reading. In darkness, or when cloud prevents a clear shadow, the Sun-and-shadow method cannot reliably tell you the time. It is best treated as a daylight estimate, not a replacement for a clock when you need an exact civil time.
