How to Delete Data on a Samsung Galaxy Watch: Files, Health Records, and Full Resets

A factory reset is only one way to delete Samsung watch data. Choose the right method for files, apps, health history, resale, or a lost watch.

Choose the data you want to remove before you tap Reset: deleting photos or music frees storage, uninstalling an app removes that app, Samsung Health has a separate control for health-history deletion, and a factory reset wipes the watch itself. A reset does not necessarily remove information from your phone, Bluetooth settings, or Samsung Health. The steps below cover Galaxy Watch models, older Gear watches, and Galaxy Fit, whose options differ by model and software.

Menu names can vary by watch model, operating system, phone, carrier, and software version. Samsung’s reset instructions note that Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic are not compatible with iOS; iPhone support is limited to certain older models.

Choose the least destructive way to delete data

Your goal Use this method What it affects
Free up watch storage Delete images, audio, downloads, or unused apps Selected files or apps on the watch
Remove an app Uninstall it in Galaxy Wearable or on the watch The selected app; some preinstalled apps cannot be removed
Troubleshoot an app or connection Force-stop or update the app; if needed, clear Galaxy Wearable cache or data on the phone Phone-side app state when clearing Galaxy Wearable data; not a full watch wipe
Delete Samsung Health history Use Samsung Health’s Erase personal data control Samsung Health data stored on the phone or tablet, in the app, and on Samsung Health’s server
Prepare a watch for transfer Back up as needed, factory-reset, then unpair Bluetooth Watch data and settings; phone-side records may remain
Erase a lost watch Use SmartThings Find’s Erase data option, if supported The selected watch; remote erase is irreversible

For a storage problem, begin with files or apps rather than a factory reset. For health-history deletion, use Samsung Health. A full reset is appropriate when you are transferring the watch or need to start it over.

Back up and export anything you may want later

For supported Galaxy Watch models, Samsung’s backup path is through the paired phone. The options and the data included vary by model. Samsung lists app data and settings for preloaded apps, installed-app lists, watch-face settings, Home-screen layout, and system settings among supported backup content. A backup is not a complete image of every file: music saved directly on the watch is not backed up, and some data may not transfer from a Tizen watch to a Wear OS model. See Samsung’s watch backup and restore guidance.

  2. Tap Watch settings, then Account and backup.
  3. Tap Backup settings or Back up data.
  4. Select the data you want included, tap Back up, and wait for completion. Tap Done if shown.

If you want to keep health records before deleting them, export them separately from Samsung Health using the steps in the health-data section below.

Delete photos and audio to free up storage

On supported Wear OS watches, use Galaxy Wearable to remove images and audio. Samsung’s storage instructions cover this route; older Tizen models may show different categories or labels.

  1. Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone.
  2. Tap Watch settings, then Battery and device care.
  3. Tap Storage, then Images.
  4. Select the images to remove and tap Delete. Confirm by tapping Delete again.
  5. Return to Storage, tap Audio, and repeat to remove selected audio.

For other downloaded files, check the watch’s Storage screen for the relevant media category. Removing unused songs and apps can also free space; a reset is unnecessary if deleting selected items solves the problem.

Uninstall an app from a Galaxy Watch

App controls differ between Wear OS and older Galaxy Watch or Gear models. Galaxy Fit devices do not support app uninstallation in the same way as Galaxy Watch. Samsung’s app guidance covers both app removal and force-stopping.

Use Galaxy Wearable

  1. Make sure the phone and watch are connected, then open Galaxy Wearable.
  2. Tap Apps or Apps screen. On some models, open the Settings tab first.
  3. On Wear OS, touch and hold the app, tap Uninstall, and confirm if prompted.
  4. On older models, tap the minus or delete icon, confirm with the check mark, and tap Save if that option appears.

Uninstall directly on the watch

  1. Press the Home/Power key and open the apps screen.
  2. On Wear OS, touch and hold the app, tap Uninstall, and confirm.
  3. On older models, choose the delete or minus icon and confirm with the check mark.

If there is no uninstall or delete option, the app may be preinstalled or restricted by the watch software.

Troubleshoot an app without wiping the watch

Use this escalation order when an app misbehaves. Force stop only stops it from running; it does not delete the app or its stored information.

  1. Force-stop the app: In Galaxy Wearable, tap Apps, then App info. Select the app, tap Force stop, and confirm.
  2. Restart the phone and watch: Recheck the app after both devices have restarted.
  3. Check for updates: Update the affected app, Galaxy Wearable, and watch software.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall: Use the app-removal steps above if the app continues to fail.
  5. Clear Galaxy Wearable’s phone-side cache or data: Try cache first. Clear data only if necessary, understanding that you may need to sign in again or reconnect the watch.
  6. Reset the watch only as a last resort: Use a factory reset if less destructive troubleshooting has not solved the problem.

To clear Galaxy Wearable on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings → Apps → Galaxy Wearable → Storage. Tap Clear cache for temporary files. If necessary, tap Clear data and confirm with Delete. Samsung distinguishes temporary cache files from app data: clearing data resets Galaxy Wearable to its default state and removes settings or other data saved by that app. This is a phone-side action, not a secure wipe of the watch or a deletion of Samsung Health records. See Samsung’s guidance on clearing app cache and data.

If the watch is stuck in a boot loop or Galaxy Wearable cannot connect, Samsung recommends troubleshooting steps such as restarting and updating devices; clearing Galaxy Wearable data may help when the watch is connected. See Samsung’s boot-loop and connection guidance.

Export or erase Samsung Health history

A factory reset of the watch is not the Samsung Health deletion procedure. Samsung Health has a separate control that Samsung says permanently deletes data stored on the phone or tablet, in Samsung Health, and on Samsung Health’s server. Deletion may take time, and sign-in may be unavailable until it finishes. These controls apply to Samsung Health records, not just records held on the watch.

Download a copy before erasing

  1. Open Samsung Health on the phone or tablet.
  2. Tap More options (the three vertical dots), then Settings.
  3. Tap Download personal data, then Download.
  4. Grant permissions and enter Samsung account credentials if prompted.
  5. Find the export under My Files → Downloads → Samsung Health.

Permanently delete Samsung Health data

  1. In Samsung Health, tap More options, then Settings.
  2. Tap Erase personal data.
  3. Tap Erase, then tap Erase again to confirm.
  4. Enter Samsung account information if prompted and tap OK.

Samsung’s Samsung Health instructions describe the export and deletion process. Treat erasure as permanent.

Factory-reset the watch

A factory reset removes personal data from the watch and restores its default settings. It does not by itself guarantee deletion of phone-side Bluetooth records, Galaxy Wearable state, Samsung Health history, or data stored in Samsung account services. If the watch is still connected, resetting through Galaxy Wearable is a useful route for managing the phone/watch relationship, but check Bluetooth pairing separately if you are transferring ownership.

Reset on the watch

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap General, then Reset.
  3. Tap the check mark or follow the confirmation prompts shown on your model.

Reset through Galaxy Wearable

  1. Open Galaxy Wearable on the connected phone.
  2. Tap Watch settings if required, then General.
  3. Tap Reset, then tap Reset again to confirm.

Reset Galaxy Fit or Fit2 through the app

  1. Open Galaxy Wearable.
  2. Tap About band, then Reset band.
  3. Tap Reset to confirm.

Original Galaxy Fit models must be reset through the app or when connecting to another phone; Galaxy Fit does not have the same on-watch Settings reset route as Galaxy Watch. Samsung lists these model-specific options in its reset guidance.

After resetting, the watch should return to its setup or Welcome screen and need to be connected to Galaxy Wearable again. Check for software updates after setup. On LTE models, reactivation may be required; if service was activated with a QR code, contact the carrier about whether you need a new one before assuming cellular service will resume automatically.

Reset a frozen, locked, or boot-looping watch

If the watch will not start or respond normally, recovery-mode reset may be necessary. Recovery controls vary by generation, so do not assume one button combination works across models. If the watch still connects, use the normal Galaxy Wearable reset path instead. Samsung provides frozen-watch reset instructions and model-specific steps in its factory-reset guide.

  1. Power off the watch, then turn it back on.
  2. When Rebooting… appears, hold the Power/Home key as instructed for your model. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch3 instructions use the Power and Back keys together during startup.
  3. Release the key or keys, then quickly press and release the Power key repeatedly to open Reboot Mode.
  4. Press the Power key until Recovery is highlighted, then press and hold to select it.
  5. On Wear OS models, select Wipe data/factory reset, then Factory data reset.
  6. Reboot after the reset completes.

Recovery mode is destructive. If you forgot the watch PIN, a reset may be necessary, but local data should be considered lost unless it was backed up.

Remotely erase a lost watch

For a supported watch that is lost or inaccessible, SmartThings Find offers a remote Erase data action. It is a wipe, not a tracking or recovery substitute. Samsung says Galaxy Fit cannot be remotely reset through SmartThings Find.

  2. Select the watch, then choose Erase data.
  3. Select Erase to confirm and enter the Samsung account password when asked.
  4. If the watch is recovered, connect it to a phone again.

For an LTE Galaxy Watch activated using a QR code, remote erasure may mean you need a new code from the carrier. See Samsung’s SmartThings Find erase instructions for supported devices and steps.

Checklist for selling, gifting, or returning a watch

  1. Back up any supported watch data you want to retain.
  2. Decide whether to download or erase Samsung Health history; watch reset alone does not perform Samsung Health erasure.
  3. Factory-reset the watch using its Settings menu or Galaxy Wearable.
  4. On the phone, open Settings → Connections → Bluetooth, find the watch, tap its gear/settings icon, and tap Unpair.
  5. Remove the watch from Galaxy Wearable and any relevant Samsung account or device list.
  6. For LTE service, check with the carrier about plan handling or reactivation.
  7. Confirm the watch is at its setup screen and no longer appears connected to your phone.

Samsung notes that a watch reset may leave information on the mobile device and recommends unpairing Bluetooth when transferring a watch. See its restart, reset, and unpair guidance.

What remains after a reset depends on where it was stored

Think of the watch, phone, and online account as separate places. A factory reset addresses the watch’s personal data and settings. Bluetooth pairing records and Galaxy Wearable app state may remain on the phone; Samsung Health records require their own deletion process; and a backup or other phone-stored media is not removed by erasing the watch. Clearing Galaxy Wearable data is likewise not a substitute for the watch reset or Samsung Health erasure.

Samsung’s guidance on Samsung Health sync and backup covers health-data syncing. For older Tizen watches moving to Wear OS, do not assume every item in a backup will transfer, and do not expect music saved directly on the watch to return from backup.
