To disconnect an Apple Watch completely, unpair it in the Apple Watch app on the iPhone it is paired with. The process erases the watch, attempts to create a backup, and removes Activation Lock when you enter the associated Apple Account password. If the paired iPhone is unavailable, you can erase the watch directly, but Activation Lock remains on.
The safest way to disconnect an Apple Watch from an iPhone
Use the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone to unpair the watch. This erases it, restores factory settings, and removes Activation Lock after you authenticate with the Apple Account password. Keep both devices close together until the process finishes. See Apple’s official Apple Watch unpairing guide.
Do not simply erase the watch from its own Settings app if you are selling or giving it away. That erases its local content and settings but leaves Activation Lock in place.
Before you disconnect the Apple Watch
- Have the paired iPhone nearby. The normal unpairing process runs from that iPhone.
- Have the Apple Account password and watch passcode available. The password is needed to turn off Activation Lock; the passcode may be requested during an erase.
- Decide what to do with a cellular plan. Keep it if you will pair the watch with this iPhone again. Remove it if you are selling or giving the watch away.
- Allow the process to finish. The iPhone attempts to create a watch backup during unpairing before the watch is erased.
How to disconnect Apple Watch from iPhone
- Keep the Apple Watch and its paired iPhone close together.
- On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch you want to disconnect.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm the watch name if prompted.
- If it is a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the plan. Keep it if you will reuse the watch with this iPhone; remove it if transferring ownership.
- Enter the Apple Account password when asked to turn off Activation Lock and complete unpairing.
Wait for unpairing to finish. The watch is erased and can be set up again or turned off for a sale or gift. The iPhone attempts to create a watch backup that may be available during a later setup.

Which cellular-plan option should you choose?

For a sale or gift, remove the plan during unpairing and contact your provider separately if you need to cancel service.
What happens to your Apple Watch data?
Unpairing through the iPhone attempts to create a watch backup for a later setup, then erases the watch. Erasing clears local content and settings, including Apple Pay cards, photos, contacts, music, and apps, and signs the watch out of services such as iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and Game Center. Apple says erasing the watch does not delete content from iCloud. See Apple’s Apple Watch backup documentation.
A backup is not a guarantee that every recent change is saved. If moving the watch to a new iPhone without the old paired phone, Apple notes that Activity, Workout, or settings changes made since the last backup may be lost. Health and Activity data stored in iCloud stays current on devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Why unpairing matters: Activation Lock
Unpairing from the paired iPhone and authenticating with the Apple Account password removes Activation Lock. This is the correct route when preparing a watch for a new owner.
Erasing directly on the watch removes its content and settings but does not remove Activation Lock. The watch may still require the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials during setup. For a sale or gift, do not hand over the watch until Activation Lock is off.

If you no longer have the paired iPhone
You can erase the Apple Watch directly, but this does not remove Activation Lock or make it ready for a new owner. The Apple Account and password associated with the watch are still needed to turn off the lock and activate it.
- On the Apple Watch, open Settings.
- Tap General, then Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if requested.
- If prompted on a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the plan.
- Tap Erase All to confirm.
If the watch has already been handed over, Apple says the former owner can erase it and turn off Activation Lock through Find My on iCloud.com. See Apple’s instructions for resetting an Apple Watch when the passcode is forgotten for the separate forgotten-passcode procedure.
If you forgot the Apple Watch passcode
Apple provides an erase procedure for a watch whose passcode is forgotten. It erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock.

- Press and hold the side button until the power button appears.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase option appears.
- Choose Reset and confirm, following the prompts to erase the watch.
When transferring ownership, unpair through the paired iPhone whenever possible. Apple Watch has no reset button or SIM slot; do not insert anything into openings in the case.
Moving the Apple Watch to a new iPhone
If the old paired iPhone is available, unpair the watch from it and then pair it with the new iPhone. Follow the pairing prompts and restore from the available Apple Watch backup if offered. Apple’s Apple Watch and new iPhone transfer guide covers the process.

If the old iPhone is unavailable, erase the watch, pair it with the new iPhone, and try to restore from a backup. Use the most recent backup if prompted. If no backup is available, set up the watch as new. Outdated iPhone or watch software can prevent a backup from appearing.
For a new-iPhone transfer, keeping the cellular plan may be appropriate if the watch remains yours. For a sale or gift, remove the plan and make sure Activation Lock is off.

The iPhone asks me to start pairing
The watch may still be paired with another iPhone. If you can access that phone, open the Apple Watch app and complete My Watch > All Watches > information button > Unpair Apple Watch, then pair with the new iPhone. If the old phone is unavailable, erase the watch and try pairing and restoring a backup on the new iPhone.
I do not know the Apple Account password
The password is required during normal unpairing to turn off Activation Lock. Recover access to the account before transferring the watch. Erasing without unpairing can leave the lock enabled.
The watch was erased, but the buyer still sees an Activation Lock screen
The watch was likely erased directly rather than unpaired, or unpairing did not complete. The previous owner must remove the watch from the account. A direct erase alone does not complete ownership transfer.

The cellular service still appears active
Removing the plan from the watch does not necessarily cancel the subscription. Contact the network provider to end service and check any applicable fees.

Keep the iPhone and watch close together and let unpairing complete. If moving to a new iPhone and no backup is offered, outdated device software may be the reason. If no backup exists, set up the watch as new.

- In the Apple Watch app, choose My Watch > All Watches, tap the information button, and select Unpair Apple Watch.
- Choose Remove Plan for a watch going to another owner.
- Enter the Apple Account password and wait for unpairing to finish.
- Contact the provider separately if you need to cancel cellular service.
- If you are buying a used watch, confirm it is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account. If setup asks for that account, Activation Lock remains.
If the paired iPhone is unavailable, erase the watch directly, but remember that the previous owner must still turn off Activation Lock before another person can activate it.
Do you need a charger to disconnect an Apple Watch?
A charger is part of the forgotten-passcode erase procedure. It is not a prerequisite for the ordinary iPhone-based unpairing steps. If the watch battery is low, charge it before starting.

Should I keep or remove my Apple Watch cellular plan?
Keep the plan if you will pair the watch with this iPhone again. Remove it if selling or giving it away. Contact your provider separately to cancel a subscription.
Can I disconnect an Apple Watch without the paired iPhone?
Yes. Erase it from Settings, but note that this does not remove Activation Lock. The previous owner must turn off the lock before another person can activate it.
What if I am moving the watch to a new iPhone and the old iPhone is unavailable?
Erase the watch, pair it with the new iPhone, and try restoring from a backup. Recent Activity, Workout, or settings changes since the last backup may be missing; set up as new if no backup is available.
