Winderoo is firmware for the Open Source Watch Winder (OSWW), a DIY device that rotates an automatic watch on a schedule. It is not a standalone winder or a ready-to-use retail kit: using it means building or adapting hardware, installing firmware, and choosing settings that suit the watch movement.
What Winderoo does
The OSWW is a largely 3D-printed watch-winder project. Winderoo runs on an ESP32 and is described as using the board’s Wi-Fi to host a browser-based control interface, so a separate phone app is not required. The project description says users can set rotation direction, a daily rotation target and a schedule. Hackster.io’s project overview describes the design; the functions below are maker-reported, not independently verified current specifications.
Reported controls and cycle behavior
In a 2023 discussion, the maker described a range of 100–960 rotations per day, clockwise, counterclockwise or bidirectional operation, a start time, manual cycle start and stop, an estimated cycle duration, and progress display. The maker also reported that the winder rests for three seconds after three minutes of rotation. These are details reported for the project at that time; check the current firmware and build documentation before relying on a particular control or range. What you need to build one
The reported OSWW design combines printed mechanical parts with common hardware and electronics. Hackster describes a 3D-printable body, standard 608zz bearings and fasteners, and a DC motor that turns the watch through a belt. Winderoo runs on an ESP32. Treat this as a list of component categories, not a confirmed current bill of materials: a 2026 comment in the project discussion reports broken BOM links, and the exact parts and wiring should be checked against live project instructions.

- Access to a 3D printer or a printing service, plus suitable filament.
- An ESP32 development board and a compatible power supply.
- A DC motor, belt, 608zz bearings, fasteners and the project’s printed parts.
- Tools and skills for mechanical assembly, wiring and firmware setup.
Do not assume any ESP32 board or motor is a drop-in replacement. In the 2026 discussion, the maker said an ESP32 should work, but an RGB LED model could require a code adjustment. Verify board details, pin assignments, power requirements and firmware instructions before ordering or connecting parts. The project discussion is the source for that compatibility comment.
Choose settings for the watch movement
Direction and turns per day are movement-specific. Consult the watch maker’s manual or instructions for the exact movement before setting a winder; do not treat Winderoo’s reported range as a recommendation for every watch. WOLF says its own database uses major-brand guidance to suggest turns per day and direction, and its FAQ says nearly all automatic watches receive energy bidirectionally unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. Set only a direction and rotation target supported by the movement’s instructions. If the manufacturer’s guidance is unavailable or unclear, seek movement-specific advice rather than guessing. A winder keeps a watch moving; it does not replace correct setting, servicing or care.
Can Winderoo control an existing winder?
The creator has said Winderoo could potentially be installed on existing winder hardware by connecting an ESP32, but the project discussion does not provide a compatibility list of retail models. Treat this as an electronics adaptation project, not a firmware upgrade that can be assumed to work with any commercial winder.

Before adapting a unit, identify its controller, motor, wiring and power arrangement, and compare them with the current firmware and build documentation. A mismatch could require electrical or code changes; if the wiring or motor requirements are not clear, do not connect the board on assumption alone.

The build-cost figures are historical estimates, not current quotes. The maker said in the 2023 discussion that a complete kit was not then being sold; that does not establish current kit availability. Check current project documentation and listings before deciding whether the DIY route is practical.

Magnetic-field claims are product-specific
WOLF’s FAQ reports a maximum reading of about 4 gauss near the bottom of its own drum and no measurable flux 10 mm away. This is a WOLF-specific statement, not a measurement of Winderoo or other winders. For concerns about a particular watch and magnetic exposure, consult its manufacturer and the specifications for the device in question. WOLF’s FAQ provides the stated measurement.
