The right way to download apps depends on your Galaxy Watch’s software. Galaxy Watch models running Wear OS use the Google Play Store; older Galaxy Watch, Gear, and Galaxy Watch Active models running Tizen use the Galaxy Store. First identify your watch’s platform, then follow the matching steps below.
Identify your Galaxy Watch’s operating system
Do not rely on appearance alone: Samsung’s menus and model lineups vary. Open Galaxy Wearable on the connected phone, select your watch, and look in its settings or About watch for software or platform information. A Play Store on the watch indicates the Wear OS route; older Tizen watches use the Galaxy Store. Samsung’s model guidance is at its Wear OS support page and its older Galaxy Watch support page.

Samsung lists Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch5 Pro, Watch6, Watch6 Classic, Watch7, and Watch Ultra among Wear OS models. Newer models, including Watch8 and Watch8 Classic, are also listed in Samsung’s US wearables price file, but check your own watch’s software rather than treating a model-name rule as definitive. What you need before installing
- For phone-based installation, pair the watch with the phone in Galaxy Wearable and keep Bluetooth on.
- Use a compatible Android phone for Wear OS Galaxy Watch setup. Samsung says these watches are not compatible with iOS for setup; Google describes limited Play Store use with an iPhone or iPad only after the watch and phone are already connected to Wi-Fi. That is not equivalent to Android setup and support. See Samsung’s compatibility guidance and Google’s Wear OS Play Store instructions.
- Sign in to the account required by the store or service. A Google Account is used for Play Store; some Samsung features or services may require a Samsung account.
- Make sure the phone and watch have internet access, enough storage, and adequate battery. A stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection helps; Bluetooth is needed for phone-to-watch management.
- Check that the app has a version for your watch’s operating system, model, region, and software. Some apps also need a phone component.
Galaxy Wearable, store labels, and menu paths can differ by watch generation, software version, phone, carrier, and region. Samsung’s older-model guidance notes that availability and options vary: Samsung support.

Install an app directly on a Wear OS Galaxy Watch
- Wake the watch and open its apps screen. On many models, press the Home or power button to reach it.
- Open Play Store.
- Tap Search and enter the app name, or browse the available categories.
- Select the app, then tap Install.
- Wait for installation to finish, then open the app from the watch’s apps screen.
Google’s instructions follow this watch-side Play Store flow; exact controls can vary by software version. See Google Play help and Samsung’s installation steps.
Install from your Android phone
Use Galaxy Wearable
- Confirm the phone and watch are connected in Galaxy Wearable.
- Open Galaxy Wearable and tap Store. Depending on the watch or app version, the section may instead be labeled Apps or have a model-specific name.
- Search or browse, select the app, and tap Install.
- If prompted, install the phone and watch components required by the app.
- When installation completes, check the watch’s apps screen.
Samsung documents the phone route as Galaxy Wearable → Store → app → Install: Samsung support.
Choose the watch in Google Play
- Open Google Play Store on the Android phone and search for the app.
- Open its listing and check for compatible devices beneath the install control.
- Select the Galaxy Watch or Wear OS device, then tap Install.
- If the phone app installs first, look for a watch-install prompt or a compatible-device option on the listing.
A phone app listing is not proof that the app supports Wear OS. If the watch does not appear as an install target, the app may lack a watch version or may not be available for that device, account, or region. Google explains this limitation in its Wear OS Play Store guidance.

Install apps on an older Tizen Galaxy Watch
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone paired with the watch.
- Open the watch’s app or store section, then go to Galaxy Store.
- Search for the app, select it, and tap Install or the download control.
- Wait for the phone and watch to synchronize, then look for the app on the watch.
Do not look for the Wear OS Play Store on a Tizen watch. Samsung distinguishes the older Galaxy Store workflow from Wear OS installation in its Tizen and Galaxy Watch guidance. Samsung also says the Galaxy Store is not available on Wear OS models: installation guidance.

Apps commonly fall into three practical groups:
- Watch-only: Runs mainly on the watch, although it may still need an account or network connection.
- Phone-and-watch companion: Uses a phone component for setup, account access, notifications, syncing, or data processing. Install both when prompted.
- Phone remote control: Displays or controls phone content and may not work independently on the watch.
For example, a music service may need a watch app and an account or subscription; a fitness app may need phone permissions and background syncing; navigation may depend on location access and a phone or network connection. Health features can also depend on the watch model, phone, country, and software. Samsung notes that some apps need components on both devices: Samsung app troubleshooting. Google cautions that not every Android phone app is available for Wear OS: Google Play help.
Update watch apps and watch software
Update Wear OS apps
- Open Play Store on the watch.
- Open the account or navigation panel and go to My Apps.
- Choose available updates, then install them.
Samsung says Wear OS app updates are handled through Play Store: Samsung update guidance.

Update Tizen apps
- Open Galaxy Wearable and then Galaxy Store.
- Tap More options, then My page and Update.
- Open the Watch tab and choose Update all or update an individual app.

Update watch software
- In Galaxy Wearable, open the watch settings.
- Tap About watch, then Update watch software.
- Check for an update and follow the prompts.
Menu location varies; a phone connection and network access may be required. Samsung’s steps are at its app and software troubleshooting page.
Remove an app
From a Wear OS watch
- Open the apps screen and touch and hold the app.
- Tap Uninstall, then confirm.
Some preinstalled apps cannot be removed. Samsung documents removal options at its troubleshooting page.

From Galaxy Wearable
- Connect the watch and phone, then open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Apps or Apps screen.
- On supported Wear OS models, touch and hold the app, tap Uninstall, and confirm. Save if prompted.
This route can help if the watch’s screen or controls are difficult to use. Menu options depend on model and software.

Google confirms that phone apps found in the broader Play Store may not support watches: Google Play help. Samsung identifies connection, storage, and software version as installation checks: Samsung installation troubleshooting.
If an installed app crashes
- Close it from Recent apps.
- In Galaxy Wearable, open Apps → App info → select the app → Force stop, if that option is available.
- Update the app and watch software, then restart the watch and phone.
- If it still fails, uninstall and reinstall it. Remove a recently installed app if problems began immediately afterward.
- Back up the watch before considering a reset.
Samsung warns that unstable third-party apps can cause crashes, freezing, or boot-loop problems and provides recovery guidance at its troubleshooting page. A reset can erase data; use Samsung’s model-specific recovery instructions if the watch remains unusable.

What LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth change
Connectivity affects downloading and using an app, but it does not decide whether the app has a compatible watch version. LTE can let a supported watch access data away from the phone, but may require carrier activation and does not remove all setup, account, companion-app, or regional requirements. A Bluetooth-only watch can still get apps through the connected phone and a network-connected watch. Installation connectivity and independence after installation are separate questions.
Should you sideload an app?
For most owners, use the official store. An Android APK is not automatically compatible with a watch: it may target the wrong architecture or Wear OS version and may omit a phone companion. Unofficial or modified packages also carry malware, privacy, security, update, and support risks. Sideloading is an advanced alternative, not a reliable way to force an incompatible phone app onto a Galaxy Watch.
When replacing an older watch makes sense
Consider an upgrade only if the app you need is Wear OS-only, your watch is no longer supported by that app, required hardware or software is missing, or device-level faults persist after troubleshooting. A missing Play Store, stale Galaxy Wearable app, lost Bluetooth connection, or phone-only app is not by itself a reason to buy a new watch. LTE is a separate choice and may add carrier costs without making every app phone-independent. Samsung’s current US watch lineup is at its Galaxy Watch page; MSRP figures vary from sale prices and do not determine whether your existing watch can install an app.
