To use a Garmin watch offline, first decide whether you need map coverage or a course to follow. On supported watches, install maps through Map Manager; send a saved or imported route to the watch as a course through Garmin Connect. Downloading maps in the Garmin Explore phone app does not install them on your watch. The exact features and menus vary by model, so check your watch’s owner’s manual for “Managing Maps” and navigation instructions.
Map or course: which one do you need?
| What you want | What to use | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Geographic map coverage on the watch | Map Manager on a supported watch | Map data for an available region. Options depend on watch model and coverage. |
| A planned route to follow | A saved or imported course sent from Garmin Connect | A route on a compatible watch; importing a GPX course does not install general map coverage. |
| Offline maps in the phone app | Garmin Explore | Maps available in the Explore app. Garmin says these downloaded maps cannot be loaded onto a Garmin device. |
Garmin’s support pages describe the relevant workflows: Map Manager, sending a course, and Garmin Explore offline maps.

Download a map directly to a supported Garmin watch
Map Manager is the route for installing watch map data. Garmin says menus, available regions and capabilities vary, so treat the following as a general flow rather than a universal path.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that your exact watch supports Map Manager and offers the region you need. Search “Managing Maps” in the watch owner’s manual; if Map Manager or the map you expect is absent, consult the model-specific instructions.
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi. Map downloads use Wi-Fi. Keep in mind they can drain the battery, and download time depends on map size and connection speed.
- Open Map Manager. On supported models, go to Settings, then Map or Map & Navigation, and select Map Manager.
- Choose a map and region. Select an available category, choose Add Map, select the desired map, then choose Download. The choices shown depend on the watch and available coverage.
- Start a queued download if prompted. Garmin says the watch may ask you to connect it to a power source before beginning the download. Follow the prompt and allow time for the transfer to finish.
For a map update, select the entry marked Update Available and queue Update. Garmin notes that some preloaded maps—such as golf, ski-resort and U.S. public-lands maps—may be updateable but not removable; a map without a remove option cannot necessarily be deleted.

Send a saved course from Garmin Connect to your watch
A course is a planned route, not a general-purpose map. Garmin’s documented app workflow is:
- In Garmin Connect, open More > Training & Planning > Courses.
- Select the saved course you want to use.
- Choose Send to Device, then select your compatible watch.
- Sync the watch with Garmin Connect to complete the transfer.
- On the watch, open the activity profile you plan to use and find Courses or Saved under its Settings or Navigation options. Follow the prompts in the owner’s manual; the precise labels and steps vary by model.
On Garmin Connect’s website, open Training & Planning > Courses, select the course, and use Garmin Express or the phone app to sync it to the watch.

Garmin’s course-transfer guidance says most compatible devices have a 100-course limit and may treat course names sharing the first 15 characters as duplicates. That guidance is associated with an Edge 810 support page and should not be assumed to describe every watch; check your model’s specifications.

If you have a route file from another source, import it into Garmin Connect as a course, then send that course to the watch. Garmin Connect supports FIT, GPX and TCX course files.

This transfers a route to follow; it does not download the surrounding map. If you want map coverage as well, install an available map separately through Map Manager.

Garmin Explore offline maps stay in the phone app
Garmin says maps downloaded for offline use in Garmin Explore cannot be loaded onto a Garmin device. Its Explore information lists TopoActive maps, worldwide satellite imagery and USGS quads as downloadable in the app without purchase; additional offline layers are available through Outdoor Maps+. These app-level downloads are distinct from installing a watch map with Map Manager.

Outdoor Maps+ adds premium map content on eligible watches
Garmin documents Outdoor Maps+ content for supported watches. The subscription is associated with the Garmin account tied to the service; on a supported watch, download the content through Map Manager over Wi-Fi. Garmin says the watch software should be current. Check current plan terms and device eligibility before subscribing; the subscription is for premium map content, not a general requirement for sending an ordinary saved course.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Garmin Trails are courses with a separate offline-feature condition
Garmin Trails found in Garmin Connect or Garmin Explore can be sent to a compatible device and appear as courses to follow. Garmin says the described offline-navigation feature for Trails requires an active Garmin Connect+ or Outdoor Maps+ subscription. This condition applies to that Trails feature, not to the separately documented transfer of an ordinary saved Garmin Connect course.
Golf-course downloads are a different workflow
On some golf watches without preloaded course maps, a golf course can be downloaded through Garmin Connect or Garmin Golf. The workflow depends on the watch and app, so use the instructions for your specific model rather than the outdoor-navigation course steps above. Garmin Golf lists the D2 Air X15, Venu 3/3S, Venu 4, vívoactive 5 and vívoactive 6 among compatible devices. Some Garmin Connect workflows keep the most recently played golf course cached on the watch.
Quick Recap
If the map or course does not appear
- Map Manager is missing: Check the owner’s manual to confirm that your model supports it and identify its menu path.
- Your desired region is not listed: Map availability depends on the watch and coverage; Garmin’s general instructions do not establish that every region is available on every model.
- A map download is waiting: Connect the watch to a power source and respond to its prompt to begin. Wi-Fi download duration varies with file size and connection speed.
- The course is not on the watch: Confirm it was saved in Garmin Connect, sent to the intended compatible watch, and synced. Then look under the relevant activity’s navigation or course menu.
- A GPX route did not add map coverage: That is expected: it imports as a course. Install a map separately through Map Manager if your watch supports one.
- A course seems duplicated or will not transfer: Check the watch’s course capacity and naming behavior in its model specifications; Garmin’s cited general guidance is not guaranteed to apply to every watch.
