What app does the Fitbit Charge 5 use?
The Charge 5 uses the general Fitbit companion app. Older manuals and setup guides call it the Fitbit app, while the current app-store name is Google Health (Fitbit). Google’s support pages may also refer to it as the Google Health app.

You will also need a Google Account, internet access, Bluetooth, sufficient phone storage, and a charged Charge 5. Keep the phone and tracker close together during pairing and firmware updates. Google lists some compatibility risks even when the operating-system requirement is met, including the Huawei P8 Lite, Huawei P9 Lite, Xiaomi Mi 6, and Huawei P20 Lite. See Google’s current compatibility and account guidance if you use one of these models.
Download and set up the app on Android
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Health (Fitbit) or Google Health Fitbit. Searching for “Fitbit” may also find it.
- Confirm that the developer is Google LLC.
- Tap Install and wait for the download to finish.
- Open the app and tap the option to sign in with Google.
- Sign in with an existing Google Account or follow the prompts to create one.
- Allow permissions requested for Bluetooth, notifications, location-based functions, and syncing. Location permission is especially relevant to GPS features.
- Choose the option to set up or add a device, then select Charge 5.
- Follow the pairing instructions shown in the app. Keep the tracker nearby until setup completes.
The Charge 5 may display a confirmation code during pairing. The app may also offer a firmware update; do not move the tracker away or close the app while the update is in progress.
Download and set up the app on iPhone

- Turn on Bluetooth when prompted and approve the permissions required for syncing, notifications, and GPS-related features.

Prepare the Charge 5 for pairing
Charge the tracker before beginning. The Charge 5 manual says a full charge takes approximately one to two hours. Then open Google Health (Fitbit), sign in, and add the tracker from inside the app.
Downloading the app does not automatically pair the Charge 5. Successful setup means that the tracker appears in your account, the pairing confirmation is completed, and the first synchronization begins. The app is where you view activity, sleep, workouts, and other data recorded by the tracker.
Use the app’s pairing flow rather than adding the Charge 5 through the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth settings first. Keep both devices within roughly 30 feet (10 meters), as recommended in the Charge 5 documentation.

If you cannot find or install the app
The app does not appear in search
- Search for Google Health Fitbit, not only “Fitbit Charge 5.”
- Open the exact official Play Store or App Store listing.
- Check that your phone meets Android 11 or iOS 16.4 requirements.
- Check your store country, account, and parental-control restrictions.
- If your phone is a listed compatibility-risk model, try another supported phone.
Do not solve a missing listing by downloading an APK from an unofficial source.

- Restart the phone.
- Check available storage.
- Install pending phone operating-system updates.
- Retry using reliable Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- On Android, clear the Google Play Store cache if the store is stuck.
- On iPhone, confirm the device can run iOS 16.4 or later.
- Check whether a work-managed phone blocks app installation, Bluetooth, location, or background activity.
Clearing the Play Store cache and resetting an app-store login are general troubleshooting steps, not special Charge 5 requirements.
If the Charge 5 will not connect or sync
- Charge the tracker and keep it near the phone.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
- Open Google Health (Fitbit) and confirm that you are signed in.
- Force-quit and reopen the app.
- Restart the phone and restart the Charge 5.
- Check that required permissions and background activity are still enabled.
- Retry setup inside the app rather than from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Remove an old Charge 5 entry from the account or Bluetooth list only when the app directs you to do so.
- Try another compatible phone if the problem continues.
For an unresponsive tracker, the Charge 5 manual describes connecting the charging cable and pressing the charger button three times within eight seconds, holding each press for about one second. Wait for the Fitbit logo. The manual states that restarting does not delete data. Avoid a factory reset unless official support specifically recommends it, because resetting can erase stored information and setup details.

For some app problems, Google Play support responses recommend logging out, force-quitting the app, restarting the phone, and signing in again. A temporary service outage or an account issue can also stop syncing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if you have an old Fitbit account?
Older articles may tell you to create or use a Fitbit account. Google’s current documentation says a Google Account is required for Google Health, and Fitbit-account users need to move to a Google Account to access Google Health. Follow the migration prompt shown in the app rather than assuming an old Fitbit login will still work.
Google’s documentation references transition dates in 2026 that have already passed. If the app does not offer access to your legacy account or its data, contact Google/Fitbit support instead of creating multiple accounts or assuming migration is reversible.

Android and iPhone differences
Both platforms support the companion app when they meet the current requirements, but features are not identical. Notification controls, calendar behavior, and message interactions vary by operating system. The Charge 5 manual identifies quick replies as an Android feature for supported messages.
Charge 5 supports dynamic GPS. When your phone is nearby, it may use the phone’s GPS; otherwise, it may use built-in GPS. Phone-GPS use requires Bluetooth, pairing, phone location services, and location permission for the app. That permission is relevant to GPS and location-dependent features, not necessarily to basic step tracking. Availability of payment, health, and other features can also vary by country, phone, bank, operating system, and account.
Do you need Fitbit Premium?
No. You do not need Premium to download Google Health (Fitbit), pair a Charge 5, sync basic data, or view ordinary activity information.
