On Apple Watch, open Settings → Passcode → Wrist Detection and switch the setting on or off. You can also change it in the paired iPhone’s Watch app → My Watch → Passcode → Wrist Detection. Turning it off affects more than screen behavior: it changes automatic locking and limits heart-rate, Activity, Stand, and fall-emergency features.

Turn Wrist Detection on or off on Apple Watch

  1. Open the Settings app on your watch.
  2. Tap Passcode.
  3. Turn Wrist Detection on or off.

Apple says Wrist Detection is normally on by default. The option is under Passcode because it helps the watch detect when it is being worn and manage automatic locking. Menu wording or placement can vary slightly by watchOS version. Apple Watch User Guide.

Change Wrist Detection from your iPhone

  1. Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
  2. Tap My Watch.
  3. Tap Passcode.
  4. Turn Wrist Detection on or off.

Apple documents this route in its guidance for getting accurate Apple Watch measurements: Get the most accurate measurements using your Apple Watch.

What changes when Wrist Detection is off?

Wrist Detection is not just a way to wake the display. Apple lists several consequences when it is disabled:

Apple’s cited guidance describes which functions are available; it does not say that disabling Wrist Detection deletes previously recorded Health or Activity history.

Control What it does Where to find it
Wrist Detection Detects whether the watch is being worn and affects automatic locking and related features. Watch Settings → Passcode, or iPhone Watch → My Watch → Passcode.
Wake on Wrist Raise Controls whether raising your wrist wakes the display. Watch Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake on Wrist Raise.
Passcode Protects the watch when locked. Turning Wrist Detection off is not the same as turning the passcode off. Watch Settings → Passcode. Apple lists Turn Passcode Off as a separate control.
Fall Detection Separately controls fall detection; automatic emergency calling after a hard-impact fall still requires Wrist Detection to be on. iPhone Watch → My Watch → Emergency SOS → Fall Detection.

If your only problem is that the screen wakes when you raise your arm, turn off Wake on Wrist Raise instead. Theater Mode can also temporarily prevent wrist-raise wake behavior without disabling Wrist Detection. See Apple’s guide to turning on and waking Apple Watch.

Should you disable Wrist Detection?

Keep it on for normal wrist wear

  • You rely on heart-rate readings or notifications, Activity measurements, or Stand progress.
  • You want the watch to lock automatically when you take it off.
  • You want automatic emergency calling after a hard-impact fall to remain available.
  • You use Double Tap or other features that depend on the watch being worn.

Consider turning it off only for a specific need

It may be a workaround if the watch is mounted somewhere other than your wrist, worn over a barrier that prevents reliable skin contact, or repeatedly misdetects whether it is being worn. A controlled environment or an accessibility, occupational, or comfort need may also make automatic locking impractical. In those cases, weigh the intended use against the health, fitness, security, and emergency limitations above; disabling Wrist Detection is not simply a display preference.

Fix Wrist Detection problems before switching it off

If the watch locks while you are wearing it

  • Adjust the band so the back of the watch maintains consistent skin contact; it should be snug but comfortable.
  • Clean and dry the watch back and your wrist. Moisture, sweat, or dirt can interfere with sensor readings.
  • Wear the watch on top of your wrist, not over clothing, and check that the selected wrist and watch orientation are correct.
  • Temporarily remove a case, sleeve, or accessory that may interfere with contact.
  • If Wrist Detection was turned off, turn it back on and see whether normal locking resumes.

Apple’s fit and measurement guidance is available in Get the most accurate measurements using your Apple Watch and its heart-rate guidance. Tattoos or some skin conditions may also affect sensor or gesture behavior.

If the Wrist Detection option is missing or unavailable

  1. Look under Passcode, not Display & Brightness; the latter contains Wake on Wrist Raise.
  2. Check both the watch’s Settings → Passcode screen and the paired iPhone’s Watch → My Watch → Passcode screen.
  3. Restart the watch and iPhone, then install available watchOS and iOS updates.
  4. If the control remains unavailable, contact Apple Watch Support. Management or restrictions may affect settings in some configurations, but Apple’s cited guidance does not establish that they always remove Wrist Detection.

If Double Tap stopped working

Check that Wrist Detection is on, then review Settings → Gestures → Double Tap and Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake on Wrist Raise. Apple also recommends checking whether Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, Theater Mode, Water Lock, watch fit, or the watch’s locked state is affecting the gesture. See Apple’s Double Tap troubleshooting guidance.

After changing the setting

If you turned Wrist Detection back on to restore a feature, check that feature’s own setting as well—for example, Fall Detection under Emergency SOS or Double Tap under Gestures. Do not assume every function will resume immediately; confirm it is enabled and working under your usual conditions.

For Fall Detection, Apple’s instructions are at Use Fall Detection with Apple Watch. For the effects of Wrist Detection on locking, Apple Pay, heart rate, and Activity, see the Apple Watch User Guide.
