1. Establish the exact identity of the watch
Start with the lot’s exact model and reference. Record every identifier stated in the catalogue, including case, movement, and serial numbers, then compare them with the watch and any documents available for inspection.

Check whether the details form a plausible whole: case shape and material, dial, movement or calibre, complication, clasp, signatures, and accessories should be consistent with the stated configuration. A catalogue can be a useful checklist, but its claims still need to be checked against the lot. A 2026 Phillips Gerald Charles listing, for example, included fields such as reference, model name, year, movement and case numbers, calibre, materials, dimensions, signature locations, and accessories: Phillips lot 42.
Do not rely on a brand signature, certificate, or matching number alone as proof that the entire watch is authentic and original. Sotheby’s Gerald Charles catalogue notes warn that repairs and restoration can involve replacement components, and that the auction house does not guarantee the authenticity of individual parts such as hands, crowns, crystals, screws, bracelets, or straps. Ask specifically about any component whose originality matters to you.

2. Assess condition in person, not just in photographs
Request the written condition report and arrange a viewing before bidding. Ask whether a qualified watchmaker can inspect the watch before the sale. Sotheby’s buyer guidance recommends qualified-watchmaker inspection of potential watch purchases; Phillips also advises inspection and describes limitations in its watch disclosures.

- Case: polishing, loss of sharp edges, dents, and other wear.
- Dial and hands: damage, signs of refinishing, or parts that appear inconsistent with the stated configuration.
- Crown, crystal, clasp, bracelet, and strap: condition, fit, and any disclosed replacement.
- Movement: visible corrosion or damage, reported operating condition, repairs, and service history.
- Records: whether the auction house knows of restoration or replacement components, and whether the answer is based on documentation or visual assessment.
A condition report is an opinion and may not identify every mechanical defect, restoration, or replaced part. Ask focused follow-up questions and have a specialist assess issues that the report does not settle.

What “running” does—and does not—tell you
“Running” means the movement was observed operating at a point in time; it does not establish accurate timekeeping, a clean bill of health, or future reliability. In a 2013 Sotheby’s Gerald Charles lot note, the movement was described as running when catalogued but not tested for timekeeping accuracy, and the note said it might need service. A 2014 Sotheby’s entry likewise said the watch was running but had not been checked for timekeeping and that future operation was not guaranteed. Those are lot-specific caveats, not a universal test result.

Ask what checks were actually performed, when they were performed, and whether any service documentation is available. Do not treat an observation at cataloguing as a substitute for a watchmaker’s examination.
Water resistance needs its own assessment
Do not infer current water resistance from the model, case construction, or an earlier test. Auction guidance may disclaim a water-resistance guarantee, including when the case has been opened for examination. If you intend to wear the watch, have a qualified professional assess its condition and water resistance before exposing it to water.

3. Check provenance and what comes with the lot
Ask what is included and request available records: certificate of origin or purchase certificate, original invoice, service receipts, manuals, box, and prior ownership documentation. Compare identifiers on the records with those on the watch wherever possible, and note any missing paperwork or unexplained gaps.
Paperwork can corroborate a watch’s history, but it cannot by itself establish that every component is original or that the watch has not been altered. Treat provenance as a chain of supporting evidence. If identifiers conflict, a record is missing, or a history is unclear, ask the auction house for an explanation and consult a qualified specialist or Gerald Charles.

Completeness varies by lot. One Phillips Gerald Charles catalogue entry listed a certificate of origin, instruction manual, fitted presentation box, and outer packaging. That is an example of the detail a catalogue may provide—not a checklist of items every Gerald Charles watch must include.
4. Separate service needs from warranty eligibility
Gerald Charles says there is no fixed service interval because maintenance needs depend on wear and exposure. As a general guideline for mechanical watches, its FAQ suggests a check approximately every three years; this is manufacturer guidance, not an assessment of the lot you are considering. The brand describes a five-year warranty for watches purchased through its official boutiques, authorized retailers, or Geneva Atelier. Its warranty extension page says a purchase certificate is required and that an extension may be arranged within six months of purchase. These statements do not establish that a watch bought at auction is covered or that coverage transfers to a subsequent owner. Confirm eligibility for the specific watch directly with Gerald Charles, using its purchase certificate and history, before assigning any value to warranty coverage: Gerald Charles warranty information.
5. Decide what the lot is worth to you
Compare the same reference and configuration where possible. Differences in metal, complication, condition, originality, service history, provenance, and included accessories can make two watches that share a brand or model name poor comparables. Prefer realized prices for genuinely similar lots over estimates, and account for the specific sale’s buyer’s premium, taxes, shipping, and applicable import or export restrictions.
The available auction examples do not establish a reliable current price range or a broad market valuation for Gerald Charles watches. A single estimate or live bid is specific to that lot and sale; it is not, by itself, evidence of market value. Set your maximum bid only after reviewing comparable results and calculating the full amount payable under the current auction terms.
