Both automatic and hand-wound watches are mechanical: each stores energy in a mainspring. The difference is how that spring is wound. A hand-wound watch depends on you turning its crown; an automatic uses a rotor moved by wrist motion to wind the spring while you wear it. Choose by the routine and design you prefer, then compare the specifications and care instructions for the exact watch—winding type alone does not determine accuracy or quality.
How do automatic and hand-wound movements work?
Hand-wound: you turn the crown
Turning the crown transfers motion through the winding mechanism to the barrel and mainspring, which stores the energy that drives the watch. NOMOS describes the crown wheel and ratchet wheel involved in this process in its hand-wound watch guide.

Automatic: a rotor winds the spring
An automatic movement adds an internal weight, or rotor. As your wrist moves, the rotor turns and winds the mainspring. The energy store is still finite, so an automatic can stop if it is left unworn longer than its power reserve. Some automatic watches can also be wound at the crown, but whether and how to do that depends on the model; consult its instructions. Chopard explains the rotor and winding process in its watch FAQ.

What are the practical trade-offs?
| Consideration | Hand-wound | Automatic |
|---|---|---|
| Winding routine | Requires regular winding by turning the crown; the interval depends on the watch’s reserve and instructions. | Wrist motion winds the spring during wear, but the watch may need winding or resetting after it runs down. |
| Movement design | Without a rotor, a movement can be made thinner, and its architecture may be easier to see through a display back. This is a design possibility, not a guarantee about every model. | The rotor adds a component and can affect movement design and thickness; compare actual case and movement specifications. |
| Owner interaction | Suits someone who enjoys a deliberate winding routine. | Suits someone who wants wrist motion to replenish the spring during regular wear. |
| When left unworn | Stops when its reserve runs out. | Also stops when its reserve runs out; wrist movement only helps while it is being worn. |
| Accuracy and quality | Not determined by hand-winding alone; assess the specific movement and watch. | Not determined by automatic winding alone; assess the specific movement and watch. |
NOMOS describes the choice as a matter of personal attitude toward the watch rather than technical superiority of one winding mechanism. That is a useful way to frame it: convenience, design, and enjoyment are individual preferences, not a universal performance ranking.

How often should you wind one?
For a hand-wound watch
Many manufacturers recommend daily winding for their manual watches, but the appropriate routine depends on the specific watch and its power reserve. Patek Philippe recommends winding its manual watches every morning. NOMOS says its own watches typically take 20–40 turns, depending on the movement; that count is not a general rule for other watches. Follow the manual for your model rather than relying on a type-wide schedule.
For an automatic watch
An automatic generally winds while worn, but wearing it does not guarantee it will stay wound under every routine. If you rotate among watches or leave one aside, compare its stated reserve with the time it spends unworn. Once it stops, use the maker’s instructions to restart it; Patek Philippe says stopped self-winding movements can be restarted with a few gentle crown turns.

Power reserve varies by model
Power reserve is the time a fully wound watch can run without further winding. Manufacturer figures illustrate why it is better to check the exact movement than assume a standard for either type: NOMOS describes 40–72 hours as usual for modern hand-wound watches, gives 42–53 hours for its manual-winding watches, and says some of its two-barrel models reach 84 hours. Patek Philippe gives 38–48 hours for its self-winding movements, except certain models. Chopard lists 40 hours to nine days for its automatic models, depending on the model. These are separate manufacturers’ descriptions of their own watches, not a controlled comparison between winding types. See the manufacturers’ pages for NOMOS, Patek Philippe, and Chopard.
How should you wind and care for a mechanical watch?
Wind gently and follow model-specific instructions
- For a hand-wound watch, read its manual and wind gently. NOMOS recommends winding before putting its watch on to reduce lateral pressure on the crown and stem.
- Do not assume a particular direction, turn count, or resistance cue applies to every watch. NOMOS describes its own winding procedure, while Chopard warns not to wind its manual watches past the crown’s locking point.
- For an automatic that has stopped, check whether the maker recommends crown winding before wearing it and follow that procedure. Instructions for one brand or movement should not be applied to another.
Protect it from avoidable stress
Patek Philippe advises avoiding shocks, prolonged vibrations, extreme temperature changes, and magnetic fields. CHANEL also advises keeping mechanical watches away from magnetic sources. For water exposure, check the exact model’s water-resistance rating and instructions; do not treat a general care recommendation as proof that a particular watch is suitable for swimming or other activities.

Service intervals are not universal
Follow the maker’s schedule for the model and how you use it. The recommendations cited here differ: Patek Philippe advises service every eight to ten years for its quartz and mechanical watches through its official service center or an authorized retailer; CHANEL recommends five years between movement services for its manual and automatic watches; TAG Heuer gives approximately five to six years for an overhaul of its watches. TAG Heuer also recommends water-resistance testing every two years for watches regularly exposed to water. These are brand-specific recommendations, not one industry-wide interval. See the relevant guidance from Patek Philippe, CHANEL, and TAG Heuer.

- Consider hand-wound if you enjoy winding a watch regularly, prefer a rotor-free movement, or are drawn to a design that may be thinner or show more of its movement through a display back.
- Consider automatic if you wear the same watch frequently and want wrist movement to wind it during wear.
- If you rotate watches, compare the exact models’ power reserves and how convenient they are to restart and reset after stopping.
For either type, compare model-level details such as case size and thickness, materials, water resistance, price, and access to local service. Those differences come from the particular watch, not simply from whether it is automatic or hand-wound.
