1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEvaluate the watch as a complete object first, then check its case, dial, hands, movement, records and auction disclosures against what is documented for that specific maker and model. A polished catalogue photograph, rarity, or an auction-house description is not proof of condition or originality. For a significant lot, arrange an in-person inspection and independent advice before setting your maximum bid.
Start with the maker and the specific watch
There is no broadly applicable grading system that turns an independent watchmaker’s craftsmanship into a single score. Finishing, design details and documentation can differ from one maker to another—and sometimes between examples. Begin with the catalogue’s model or reference information, then compare the watch with reliable records for that maker: documented examples, available maker records, and reputable specialist material.

Make a list of the details you expect to verify, such as case shape, dial layout, hand design, movement configuration and any documented variations. If the reference or a claimed feature cannot be established from dependable records, treat it as an open question rather than assuming it is correct.
Make a whole-watch assessment before using magnification
Look at the watch as an object before concentrating on small details. Sotheby’s watch specialist Jonathon Burford advises, “Don’t start with a loupe.” First ask whether the case, dial, hands, bracelet or strap, and apparent age make sense together.

Inconsistent wear is a prompt to investigate, not a verdict. For example, a remarkably fresh dial in a heavily worn case may have an explanation, such as replacement or restoration, but appearance alone cannot establish which. A 10x watchmaker’s loupe can help with close visual inspection after this first pass; it cannot authenticate the watch or substitute for a qualified watchmaker’s examination.
Check whether the case retains its intended shape
Polishing removes metal, so the important question is what it has done to this particular case. Compare the watch’s geometry with documented examples of the same model or maker. Look for softened or asymmetrical lugs, rounded edges where crisp transitions should remain, erased bevels, distorted proportions, shallow hallmarks, and uneven brushing or polishing. Note dents, corrosion and surface wear as well.
Polishing is not automatically disqualifying. Its significance depends on the amount of material removed, the effect on the design and the watch’s documented history. A case that looks bright in a photograph may still have lost important geometry; a visible mark, in turn, does not by itself establish poor workmanship.

Assess the dial, hands and luminous material for consistency
Look for coherent printing and finishing, and check whether the dial, hands and luminous material appear consistent with one another and with documented examples. Possible concerns include signs of refinishing, replacement service components, reluming, moisture damage, corrosion, rust or flaking. A pristine dial on a visibly worn watch warrants a question, but age or visual perfection alone cannot establish originality.
Use maker-specific documentation and specialist advice to assess details that may vary by reference. Ask the auction house directly whether any dial, hand or luminous material is known to have been replaced, restored or altered.
Ask for movement evidence and service records
Request clear movement photographs and whatever documentation is available for service, repairs and replacement components. Do not open the watch or try to expose the movement unless you have the appropriate skills and access; for a valuable or complex lot, ask a qualified watchmaker to inspect it.

Scratches on screw heads can indicate tool contact and may offer clues about previous work. They do not identify who performed that work, prove that it was competent, or establish that the movement is correctly assembled. Treat them as one observation among others, not as a quality score or authentication test.

Test provenance and component originality
Ask what evidence supports the ownership history and whether the maker or a recognized archive can confirm relevant details. Letters, photographs, invoices and service documents may help substantiate a history; an appealing narrative without supporting records is weaker evidence. Auction catalogue histories can be incomplete, and replacement parts may not always be disclosed.
Request a clear account of which components are original and which have been replaced or restored. If an answer is uncertain or documents conflict, include that uncertainty in your assessment rather than treating an undocumented claim as fact.

Use condition reports as guidance, not assurance
Read the report and catalogue description, then ask specific follow-up questions about anything unclear or omitted. Phillips cautions that its reports may not list every replacement or imperfection, and that an omission does not imply good condition or working order. Its Hong Kong buyer guide says its staff are not professional restorers and recommends a buyer’s own restorer or professional adviser for significant lots. Christie’s likewise describes condition reports as guidance and recommends viewing in person where possible.
Those statements describe the cited auction guidance, not a universal guarantee or a rule for every jurisdiction. Check the terms and inspection options for the actual sale. When possible, view the lot in person and have an independent specialist examine it; do not assume a report replaces either step.

Set a bid ceiling that reflects uncertainty
Before bidding, obtain a service or repair estimate if condition or service history is unclear. Calculate your ceiling using the evidence, likely work and the costs specified by that sale—not only the estimate or the watchmaker’s reputation. Include the buyer’s premium, applicable taxes, shipping and any import constraints. Phillips’ Hong Kong guide notes that its pre-sale estimates exclude the buyer’s premium and applicable taxes; verify the current terms and charges for the auction and location you are considering.
If important questions about originality, condition or access remain unanswered, decide in advance how much uncertainty you are willing to accept. A bid should reflect both what is documented and what is not.
