Start with the exact lot and report
Confirm that the report belongs to the watch you are considering and note when it was prepared. Read it alongside the catalogue description and available photographs; differences between those sources are useful prompts for questions.

A condition report is an assessment of an object’s physical state at the time of auction. It may discuss damage, fading, restoration, or repair, but its scope is not necessarily exhaustive. Christie’s says its reports are guidance, lots are sold as is, and the buyer is responsible for requesting and considering the report: Christie’s explanation of condition reports. Sotheby’s also advises bidders to investigate lots before bidding and may provide reports and online images as condition-report material: Sotheby’s global buyer guide.
Check what the report says about operation
Look for precise wording about whether the watch was observed running, when that observation took place, and which functions—if any—were checked. If the wording is vague, ask the auction house what was actually observed and whether functions such as the date, chronograph, or winding were tested.

A statement that a watch was running at one point does not establish that it keeps accurate time, that every function works, or that it will continue to run reliably. The cited buyer guidance does not establish a standard test protocol, so ask about the examination behind any operational description rather than assuming a particular level of testing.
Ask about service history and replaced parts
Ask whether service records or other documentation are available, whether the auction house knows of replaced or altered parts, and what those records do—and do not—confirm. Do not infer that a watch is entirely original because the report says nothing about replacements.
Sotheby’s watch-specific notice cautions that a report may not identify all mechanical replacements or imperfections in a movement or dial. It describes reports as opinions, not exhaustive findings. Compare visible condition and included items
Use the report and photographs to examine the case, dial, hands, bracelet or strap, and any accessories pictured or listed. These are areas to check, not a promise that every report will address each one. Ask about apparent inconsistencies, damage that is difficult to judge from images, or an item you expected to be included but cannot find in the listing.
Separate what the report states from what the photographs appear to show. Images can help identify questions, but they may not settle them; ask for clarification rather than treating an unmentioned feature as confirmed sound or complete.
Arrange an inspection when possible
If the watch’s value or condition makes uncertainty consequential, ask whether an in-person viewing or an inspection by a qualified watchmaker can be arranged. Access depends on the auction house’s rules and schedule. Sotheby’s specifically advises buyers to consider a qualified watchmaker’s inspection or contact a watches expert about inspection arrangements.

Before deciding what to bid, check the current conditions of sale for that specific auction. Sotheby’s buyer guidance explains that the buyer’s premium and, where applicable, an overhead premium are added to the hammer price; taxes, shipping, and other charges may also affect the amount you pay. Fees and estimates can change, so use the terms currently published for the sale rather than relying on an old example or a general rule.
Work backward from the maximum total you are willing to spend, allowing for all applicable charges, to set a hammer-price ceiling. A bid that fits your limit before premiums and other costs may exceed it once the transaction total is calculated.
A practical question list
- Is this the current report for this exact lot, and when was it prepared?
- Was the watch observed running? When, and which functions were checked?
- Are service records available, and what do they document?
- Are any replaced or altered parts known, including in the movement or dial?
- Can you clarify the condition of any case, dial, hands, bracelet, strap, or accessory that is unclear in the report or images?
- Can I view the watch or arrange an inspection by a qualified watchmaker, and what access rules apply?
- What premiums, taxes, shipping charges, and other costs apply under the current sale terms?
For two or more lots, compare the evidence rather than just the descriptions: known replacements and originality information, stated function and service details, visible condition and completeness, report specificity, inspection access, and all-in cost. Missing information is an uncertainty to resolve—not evidence that a watch has no defect.
