Start with a watchmaker who has relevant, verifiable experience with your watch and the specific repair it needs. Check any claimed credential with the issuing organization, confirm manufacturer authorization if your brand requires it, and compare written estimates and service terms before handing over the watch. Certification and service policies vary by organization, brand, model, and location.
Find watchmakers who handle your watch
For U.S. owners, a practical starting point is the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) Find a Professional directory. Search by ZIP code or location, then narrow by brand or watch style if useful. AWCI says the directory searches member profiles, so a missing keyword match does not prove that no suitable local watchmaker exists: a member may not have included that term in their profile.

Contact promising candidates and ask whether they work on your exact brand, model, movement, and fault. A shop’s general experience with watches does not establish that it is equipped for every movement or repair. Ask who will diagnose and perform the work, and whether any part of it will be sent elsewhere.
Verify credentials and what they mean
The phrase “certified watchmaker” by itself is not a protected designation, AWCI warns. Ask which specific credential the person holds and verify it rather than relying on wording in an advertisement or shop profile.

AWCI designations
AWCI’s named watchmaker designations include CW21 (Certified Watchmaker of the 21st Century) and CMW21 (Certified Master Watchmaker of the 21st Century). AWCI describes the CW21 exam as a stringent three-day examination covering four technical areas, including automatic, quartz, and chronograph watches. That exam duration describes the certification process; it is not a measure of the quality of any particular repair.
AWCI says certificate holders must complete continuing education to keep certification current. Check the claimed designation in the AWCI directory or confirm it with AWCI. A listing can indicate membership, but membership or certification alone does not prove that a particular repair is appropriate or that the individual is authorized by a watch manufacturer.
Membership and accountability
AWCI says members agree to its Code of Ethics and provides an Ethics Committee contact for complaints against members. Its code says members should conduct business in a way that reflects positively on themselves, AWCI, and the repair industry. Treat this as a conduct commitment, not a guarantee of an individual repair outcome. Ask about the person doing your work and assess their fit for the watch and job.

Check whether manufacturer authorization matters
If the watch is under warranty, valuable, or subject to a manufacturer’s service rules, check the policy for its brand and model before choosing an independent shop. Authorization requirements are not universal.
For example, Rolex says its Official Rolex Jewelers and affiliates are authorized to receive watches for servicing, and its FAQ says third-party work voids its guarantee. Patek Philippe says its timepieces must be serviced only by authorized retailers or service centers. Use each brand’s own locator to verify a provider’s status: Rolex service FAQ and Patek Philippe retailer network. Do not assume either brand’s policy applies to another manufacturer.
Compare the written estimate and service terms
Get the diagnosis, proposed work, and estimate in writing before authorizing a repair. Make sure the estimate explains what is included, which parts may need replacing, and whether the shop will seek approval before doing additional work. Ask what parts will be used and whether any are non-original or unavailable from the manufacturer.
Rank #3
- Scope: What fault was found, and what repair or service is proposed?
- Parts: Are replacement parts original, alternative, or dependent on availability?
- Approval: Will you be contacted before costs or work go beyond the estimate?
- Responsibility: Who will do the work, and will the watch leave the shop?
- Timing: What is the expected turnaround, and how will delays be handled?
- Protection: What guarantee applies to the work, and what testing is included?
- Intake record: Will you receive a written record of the watch’s condition and the accessories received?
These are practical questions, not a universal legal checklist. A manufacturer’s service process may be more specific: Rolex describes diagnosis and an estimate for approval before service. Its account of a complete service includes disassembly, cleaning, inspection, replacing parts that fail its specifications, lubrication, timing tests, refinishing, and checks of waterproofness, power reserve, and precision, followed by a service guarantee. Do not assume an independent shop’s service includes the same steps; ask what it will actually do.

If you have more than one option, compare the same details for each. A lower price is not meaningful if one estimate covers a narrower repair or uses different parts.
| What to compare | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Relevant credentials | Exact designation, current status, and how it can be verified. |
| Experience | Work on your brand, model, movement, and specific fault. |
| Authorization | Whether the shop appears in the manufacturer’s locator and whether that status matters for your watch. |
| Diagnosis and scope | Written findings, proposed work, testing, and what is excluded. |
| Parts | Original or alternative parts, availability, and approval for replacements. |
| Estimate process | What the price covers and when the shop will obtain approval for additional work. |
| Turnaround and guarantee | Expected timing and the written terms that apply after service. |
Repair cost depends on factors including watch complexity, manufacturer component costs, and local business expenses. Compare what each shop proposes to do, not just the total. The available official sources do not establish comparative repair-outcome rates or customer-satisfaction scores, so credentials and written terms are checks—not a substitute for judging whether the proposed work fits your watch.
Use service intervals as guidance, not a universal rule
Service timing depends on the watch and its use. AWCI’s general guidance is that most mechanical watches should be serviced every 3 to 5 years; it also notes that some manufacturers recommend 8 to 10 years. Rolex recommends service approximately every 10 years, depending on model and real-life use. These recommendations differ, so follow the advice for your specific brand and model rather than applying one interval to every watch.
