Start by identifying the band: move a buckle strap one hole at a time, check a metal bracelet’s clasp adjustment before changing links, and treat cuttable rubber straps as model-specific. If you are unsure how a bracelet is secured, use the watch maker’s instructions or ask a qualified watchmaker.
Identify the band before adjusting it
The closure and construction determine what can be changed safely. A buckle strap adjusts at its holes; a metal bracelet uses links and may also have adjustment positions on its clasp. A NATO strap is a single length of fabric routed through the watch. Some rubber straps with folding clasps have a short section designed to be trimmed, but that is not a universal feature.

TAG Heuer’s strap guidance says leather, nylon, and rubber straps with pin or folding buckles can be adjusted at home, while NATO straps do not require adjustment. For steel wristbands, it recommends official or authorized help because adjustment requires specific tools and expertise.

Move the buckle tongue to the next hole in the direction that relieves the tightness or looseness.

Put the watch back on and check both comfort and security. If one hole feels tight and the next feels loose, do not assume that punching a new hole is safe: the appropriate method depends on the strap material and construction, and there is no universal safe procedure for making an extra hole.

Check a metal bracelet’s clasp before changing links
Look for small adjustment holes or a quick-adjust mechanism on the clasp. Some bracelets allow a spring bar to be moved between positions, changing the fit without removing a link. The procedure is design-specific: Nixon’s watch-sizing instructions describe moving a spring bar between clasp holes with a small punch, while NOMOS explains quick-adjustment pins on its Sport bracelet. These examples do not establish a method for other bracelet designs.

If clasp adjustment does not provide enough range, the bracelet may need links added or removed. Check the watch maker’s guide for your exact model and the bracelet’s fastening system before using tools. NOMOS says surplus links on its Sport bracelet can be removed with a 1.0 mm screwdriver; that tool and method should not be assumed to apply to another bracelet. Venezianico notes that its procedures can differ by collection.

If you cannot identify how the bracelet is secured, or do not have the correct tools, stop rather than forcing a pin or screw.

For an unfamiliar or valuable bracelet, ask the manufacturer, an authorized retailer, or a qualified watchmaker. TAG Heuer specifically recommends official or authorized service for adjusting steel wristbands; Venezianico also advises seeking support or a qualified watchmaker if unsure.

Trim a rubber strap only when its design allows it
Some rubber straps with folding clasps are shortened by cutting a designated short section. Oris says this applies to many of its rubber straps with folding clasps and suggests a specialist retailer as an alternative. Cutting is irreversible, so confirm that the exact strap is intended to be trimmed and follow its instructions before removing any material. If that is uncertain, have a specialist assess it.

Consider replacing the strap if it has no usable adjustment position or remains uncomfortable after its intended adjustments. Check the lug width, attachment style, strap length, and compatibility with the specific watch before choosing a replacement. Sizing labels are not interchangeable across brands: Breitling lists Small, Standard, and Large ranges that vary with case size and compatible watch thickness, so those ranges should not be generalized to other watches.

Choose the least invasive suitable adjustment
For a metal bracelet, compare the available clasp range with the link-adjustment method, required tools, and maker’s service recommendation. A clasp adjustment is often a less involved first check, but the correct order depends on the specific bracelet. For a replacement strap, compare material, length, attachment width and type, watch compatibility, and whether any proposed alteration can be reversed.
