Ask for the original service invoice, work order or brand-issued service card, then match its identifying details to the watch and ask the issuer or brand to confirm what it can. If the paperwork is missing or the match is unclear, use the brand’s own archive or authentication process where available, or have an authorized professional inspect the watch. A service record can support that work was done; it is not automatically proof of authenticity, originality, current condition or complete ownership history.
How to check a watch’s service history
- Request the original record. Ask for the service invoice, work order or service card, along with any guarantee document. Ask who performed the work, when it was done and what it included. A service card may be tied to a particular brand’s process: for example, TUDOR says a card is provided after a full service by an Official Tudor Retailer or Service Centre. TUDOR’s servicing information explains its policy.
- Match the paperwork to the watch. Compare the brand, model or reference, and any serial number or other identifiers shown on the document with the watch and accompanying papers. Missing, inconsistent or unreadable details are reasons to seek confirmation; on their own, they do not prove a record is false.
- Contact the issuer through an official channel. Find current contact details on the brand’s or service provider’s official website—not solely through details supplied by the seller. Ask whether it can confirm the service date, provider, record number and work performed. Do not assume the brand will disclose a complete history or offer a public serial-number lookup; processes differ.
- Have an authorized professional check internal identifiers. Do not open the case yourself to compare a movement number. Patek Philippe says case-back removal should be performed only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center. Its FAQ sets out that guidance. Frederique Constant also recommends an approved service centre for authentication beyond dispute. See its FAQ.
- Clarify exactly what the record establishes. Ask whether it documents a full service or a limited repair, which components were worked on, and what guarantee—if any—applies. Treat service evidence, authenticity, originality, condition and ownership history as separate questions.
What the different documents can establish
Service card or invoice
A brand-issued card or service invoice may document work, but its meaning depends on the brand and circumstances. TUDOR says its Service Card follows a full service through an Official Tudor Retailer or Service Centre, confirms work followed brand procedures and carries an international two-year guarantee; the card can provide watch information through NFC. These are TUDOR-specific terms, not an industry-wide standard. Check TUDOR’s current service details.

Patek Philippe’s rules illustrate why context matters: for an Extract from the Archives request, a service invoice can replace serial-number images only during the service-guarantee period. That limited allowance does not mean an invoice is sufficient for every request or proves every aspect of a watch’s history. The brand also says its Certificate of Origin is an original document that cannot be reissued. Patek Philippe’s FAQ describes these document rules.

A maintenance booklet may contain useful entries, but investigate who wrote them and whether the brand can verify them. A. Lange & Söhne describes its “History of Your Watch” booklet as a place to record maintenance and ownership changes. A handwritten entry is a lead to verify, not independent confirmation by itself. Lange’s booklet information and its guarantee terms explain its own records and coverage.

Warranty card
A warranty card may help establish purchase or warranty information under the relevant brand’s rules, but it is not necessarily a service record. Oris’s help-centre article says the company and its service centres will not recognize a watch without its serial number or the warranty card supplied by an authorized dealer. That is Oris’s stated policy in an article dated 26 July 2023; check the brand’s current policy rather than applying it to other makers. Read Oris’s help-centre article.
Archive extract or authentication service
These are distinct from service records, and eligibility and scope vary. Patek Philippe describes its Extract from the Archives as a partial transcript of archive records. Longines says its US archive extracts are available only for watches more than 10 years old, and separately describes an authenticity certificate issued after authentication by its watchmakers. Its accessed US page listed a CHF 300 certificate fee; confirm the current fee and availability directly before relying on it. Longines explains its certificate and archive services.

Breguet says its museum can confirm authenticity and provide key historical-register information for antique Breguet-signed watches; the service does not provide a monetary valuation. See Breguet’s service information. Frederique Constant asks consumers to contact the company with watch details, including the serial number if available, and recommends an approved service centre for authentication beyond dispute. Its FAQ gives its guidance.
How to judge the strength of the evidence
Consider each record across five points rather than treating “has papers” as a yes-or-no answer:
Rank #3
- Provenance: Was the work done by the brand, an authorized provider or an independent workshop? A capable independent watchmaker may have performed real work, but the issuer and service route still matter.
- Matchability: Do the watch’s visible identifiers correspond to those on the document? If not, ask the issuer whether another identifier or record can establish the connection.
- Detail: Does the record specify the date and work, or merely mention a service? Ask for an itemized invoice or work order if the scope is unclear.
- Confirmability: Can the brand or named provider confirm that it issued the record and what it covers? Some may not disclose a full history.
- Applicable guarantee: Is there a guarantee, and what work, parts, time period and eligibility does it cover? TUDOR describes an international two-year guarantee for its Service Card; Lange describes a 24-month guarantee for parts affected by maintenance or repair. These are separate brand policies, not a shared watch-industry guarantee. TUDOR’s servicing page and Lange’s US guarantee page state their respective terms.
If the seller has no service paperwork
Absence of a record does not establish that a watch was never serviced. Ask the seller for the service provider’s name, approximate date and any supporting correspondence or receipts, then contact that provider using independently located details. If the brand offers archives or authentication, check its eligibility and what the result covers; an archive extract, authenticity opinion and service-history record are not interchangeable.
Options are brand-specific. Longines describes archive extracts for watches more than 10 years old and a separate watchmaker authentication process. Breguet’s historical-register service is limited to antique Breguet-signed watches. A. Lange & Söhne says its booklet can record maintenance and ownership changes, but an entry still merits confirmation. Longines, Breguet and Lange describe their respective services.
Questions to ask before you commit
- Who performed the service, and can you provide the original invoice, work order or service card?
- What date was the work completed, and what was done or replaced?
- Do the document’s identifiers match this exact watch?
- Can the named provider or brand confirm the record and any guarantee?
- If no paperwork exists, will the seller permit inspection by an authorized professional or a brand-approved authentication route?
Make the sale conditional on satisfactory verification if service history is important to your decision. A seller’s willingness to provide documents and allow independent confirmation gives you a practical way to resolve gaps; it does not substitute for the checks themselves.
