Fitbit can automatically recognize and record some high-movement workouts, but the available activities and settings depend on your device. Check your model, make sure its activity-detection feature is enabled, then review detected sessions in Google Health. Automatic detection is different from a prompt to start live Exercise tracking; if a workout is missed, you can log it manually.
First, check which Fitbit you have
Fitbit’s automatic activity detection is available on many devices, but the supported activities and controls vary by model. Google’s current device and activity guide lists Charge 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; the Inspire family; Luxe; Sense and Sense 2; Versa and Versa Lite, Versa 2, 3, and 4; and several older Fitbit devices. Pixel Watch models are listed separately. Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 have documented activity-detection settings in Google Health.

Automatic activity detection
This feature recognizes certain activities and records a workout summary for you to review later. Fitbit describes it as detecting high-movement activities; it does not promise that every workout will be recognized.

A prompt to start Exercise tracking
Some devices instead offer an Auto-start control or show a reminder asking whether you want to begin tracking a workout. Starting Exercise tracking creates a live session, rather than simply recording an activity after automatic detection. The setting, default behavior, and time allowed to respond can differ by model.
Turn on or adjust activity detection
Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5
- Open the Google Health app.
- Tap your profile, then open Google Health settings.
- Tap Activity, then Activity detection.
- Check that Detect automatically is on. If the controls are available for your device, adjust the minimum duration for an activity type or turn off detection for activities you do not want detected.
Google’s guidance for Fitbit Air generally describes activity durations of 10–20 minutes. That is specific to Fitbit Air, not a universal Fitbit threshold; other models may use different durations or offer different controls. See Google’s device-specific activity-detection instructions if the labels in your app differ.

Other Fitbit trackers and watches
On several Fitbit models, Auto-start options are in the Exercise app settings on the device. The location and available options vary, so use the instructions for your exact model in Google’s workout-tracking guide rather than assuming that every Fitbit has the Google Health setting path above.
Find and review a detected workout
Where the activity appears depends on your device generation and app experience. Check Exercise days, Today, Fitness, or Recent activities in Google Health. Depending on the device and available app controls, you may be able to confirm, edit, or delete a detected activity.

Detection is not guaranteed, even when a device supports the activity. First check that the activity is one your model can recognize and that detection is enabled; then verify whether the session appears elsewhere in your activity history. If it is absent, add it manually:

- Tap Fitness.
- Scroll to Recent activities and tap Log activity.

Google provides these steps in its instructions for logging an activity. A manual entry can record the details you provide, but it cannot be assumed to recreate the original workout’s sensor-level data.

What automatic recognition can—and cannot—promise
- Support depends on the Fitbit model and activity type; consult the official device list rather than assuming every Fitbit detects the same workouts.
- Automatic detection records an activity for later review, while an Auto-start prompt asks you to begin a live Exercise session.
- There is no single published minimum duration that applies to every Fitbit model.
- Google’s help pages describe which devices and controls are supported, but do not publish a recognition-accuracy rate or guarantee that every qualifying workout will be captured.
