What the helium escape valve does
OMEGA describes Seamaster models fitted with a helium escape valve as intended for professional or recreational divers who perform saturation dives. During this kind of diving, a diver may spend extended periods in a pressurized chamber or underwater station between work periods. The breathing gas mixture includes helium, which can diffuse through watch sealing materials and enter the case.

When the diver returns to atmospheric pressure, pressure inside the watch can exceed the surrounding pressure. The valve provides a route for that excess pressure to escape during decompression. This is why simply being underwater during a routine recreational dive does not, by itself, call for opening the valve.

OMEGA’s manual says the cited watch remains watertight up to an excess pressure of 5 bars (50 metres / 167 feet) even if the valve is unscrewed. How to operate it safely
- Identify your exact watch reference. Use the reference-specific instructions rather than assuming every Seamaster valve is the same. OMEGA’s collection description identifies a helium escape valve at 10 o’clock on the Seamaster Diver 300M, but that feature description is not a complete reference-by-reference operating guide. - Before immersion, confirm the valve is screwed in. Follow the manual’s instruction for your watch; do not open the valve as part of routine swimming or diving preparation.
- Unscrew it only for the specified decompression procedure. For the manual valve addressed by OMEGA, this means decompression in a hyperbaric chamber as the diver returns to atmospheric pressure. Do not treat the valve as a general-purpose pressure adjustment.
- Follow model-specific instructions if anything differs. If your watch’s reference uses a different valve implementation or its manual gives different directions, those instructions govern.
Care and water-resistance checks
Test water resistance annually
OMEGA recommends having water resistance tested once a year at an authorized service center. The brand notes that water resistance cannot be guaranteed indefinitely: gaskets age, and an accidental shock to the crown can affect sealing.
