1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no official standalone Gmail app for Apple Watch documented by Google. Google’s current Gmail watch instructions are for Wear OS, not watchOS. On an Apple Watch, the best full-access option is to add your Google account to Apple Mail on the paired iPhone. If you only want alerts, you can mirror notifications from the Gmail iPhone app.
Can you install Gmail directly on Apple Watch?
Not in the same way you can install Google’s Gmail app on a Wear OS watch. Google’s official watch documentation covers Wear OS and describes features such as reading, archiving, deleting, starring, marking messages read or unread, replying, and using emoji reactions. It also lists limitations including no composing, searching, viewing HTML email, opening attachments, or viewing images and links in that watch app. See Google’s Gmail-on-watch documentation.

Method 1: Add Gmail to Apple Mail
1. Add your Google account on the iPhone
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Tap Mail Accounts and Add Account.
- Select Google.
- Enter your Gmail address and complete Google’s sign-in and authorization prompts.
- Make sure the Mail switch is enabled, then tap Save if that option appears.
This is the current iOS path. Older iOS versions may put Mail directly in Settings rather than under Apps. Apple’s instructions are available in its guides for adding an email account and managing Mail accounts.
2. Choose the Gmail mailboxes shown on the watch
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then Mail.
- Under Include Mail, select your Gmail account.
- Tap the account if you want to choose particular mailboxes.
You can include an inbox and other available mailboxes, such as unread, flagged, or VIP mailboxes. Apple documents the account and mailbox controls in its Apple Watch Mail guide.
To find them on the watch, open Mail, tap the back button until you reach the mailbox list, scroll down, tap Edit, and select the Gmail account or mailbox.

3. Read and manage Gmail messages
In Apple Mail on Apple Watch, you can:
- Read messages in the included Gmail mailboxes.
- Mark messages read or unread.
- Delete messages.
- Flag messages.
- Reply with Smart Replies, dictation, Scribble, or emoji.
- Compose and send a new message.
- Choose the account used in the From field when composing.
To reply, open a message, scroll to the bottom, tap Reply, and choose a Smart Reply or an input method. To send a new message, open Mail, tap the new-message button, choose a recipient, select the Gmail account in From, write the message, and tap Send. Apple’s reply and compose instructions cover these controls.
This is an Apple Mail interface, not the full Gmail experience. Gmail-specific labels, advanced search, filters, spam controls, settings, rich formatting, and complex inbox organization are better handled on your iPhone, iPad, or computer. Attachments, images, HTML-heavy messages, and long replies are also much easier to deal with on a larger screen.
Method 2: Get Gmail notifications without adding Gmail to Apple Mail
Use this method if you want to keep Gmail as your main iPhone mail app and only need incoming alerts on your wrist.

- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
- Install the Gmail app on the iPhone and sign in.
- Open Settings → Apps → Gmail → Notifications and turn on Allow Notifications.
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Go to My Watch → Notifications.
- Select Gmail if it appears, then use Mirror my iPhone or the available custom notification controls.
A Gmail notification can show a preview and may provide notification actions, but it does not install Gmail on watchOS or create a browsable Gmail inbox. Apple explains notification mirroring and delivery behavior in its Apple Watch notification guide.
By default, a notification normally goes to the iPhone when it is unlocked and to the Apple Watch when the iPhone is locked or asleep, assuming the watch is unlocked and being worn. The two devices do not generally alert simultaneously.
Enable Apple Mail notifications for Gmail

Then check Apple Watch → My Watch → Notifications and configure Mail. Apple supports account-specific Mail notification controls; see its Mail notification guide.
Get Gmail alerts when the watch is away from the iPhone
Apple Mail includes an option for important email alerts when the watch is not connected to the iPhone:
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch → Mail.
- Under When Not Connected to iPhone, turn on Email Notifications.
This does not guarantee that every Gmail message will arrive instantly. Delivery can depend on whether the watch has Wi-Fi or cellular service, account configuration, push or fetch behavior, notification permissions, Focus modes, Low Power Mode, and the state of the iPhone and watch. Bluetooth connection, Wi-Fi connection, and cellular connection are different situations; being away from the phone does not automatically mean Gmail is available offline.

Third-party Gmail apps for Apple Watch
Third-party clients may be worth considering if you want a more dedicated mail experience, multiple-account support, or workflow tools that Apple Mail does not provide.
| App | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Mail | Basic Gmail access on the watch | Built in, no additional subscription, and supports selected mailboxes, reading, flags, deletion, replies, and composing. It is not Gmail’s interface. |
| Spark | Unified inboxes and a dedicated third-party ecosystem | Its U.S. App Store listing advertises Apple Watch support, Gmail and other providers, and watchOS 9 or later. It is a free download with in-app purchases; displayed prices can vary by region, plan, promotion, and billing screen. See the Spark App Store listing. |
| Airmail | Multiple accounts and workflow features | Its listing advertises Gmail support, an Apple Watch app, interactive notifications, snooze, and multiple accounts. It is a free download with in-app purchases. The listing says Airmail does not store messages on its servers; treat that as the developer’s statement, not an independent security certification. See the Airmail App Store listing. |
Try Apple Mail first unless you already need a unified inbox, specialized workflow, or a particular third-party client. Any app that connects to Gmail should be reviewed for its account permissions and privacy policy. Work and school Google Workspace accounts may also be restricted by an administrator, even when a personal Gmail account works.
Fix Gmail notifications that are not working
- Check iPhone notifications. For Gmail, use Settings → Apps → Gmail → Notifications. For Apple Mail, use Settings → Apps → Mail → Notifications.
- Check account-specific Mail alerts. If you use Apple Mail, open its notification customization and confirm the Gmail account is enabled.
- Check Apple Watch settings. Go to Apple Watch → My Watch → Notifications and confirm Gmail or Mail is configured.
- Check the account and mailbox. Confirm Mail is enabled for the Google account and that the account or mailbox is selected under My Watch → Mail → Include Mail.
- Check device state. An unlocked iPhone may receive the alert instead of the watch. Also check that the watch is unlocked, on your wrist, not in a restrictive Focus mode, and not disconnected.
- Check connectivity and fetching. Temporary network loss, a watch away from the iPhone, Low Power Mode, and fetch rather than push can delay updates. Mail behavior varies by account and configuration; do not assume every Gmail setup provides instant push delivery.
- Remove duplicate notification sources. If both Gmail and Apple Mail alerts are enabled for the same account, choose one. Keep Gmail alerts and disable Apple Mail alerts, or use Apple Mail for both access and notifications.
- Restart and update. If settings are correct, restart the iPhone and watch and install available iOS, watchOS, Gmail, and Mail-related updates.
What Gmail features are missing on Apple Watch?
Apple Mail makes the watch useful for triage, but it should not be treated as a miniature Gmail web client. Expect limitations around:
