Press the physical button, speak, and the ring stores the recording until it syncs with an iPhone or Android phone. The Pebble app then transcribes it locally and can turn it into a note, reminder, calendar event, timer, or custom action.
The appeal is unusual: a small, subscription-free ring priced at $75 for preorder, with a stated later price of $99. The catch is equally unusual: its battery cannot be charged or replaced, so the ring has a finite life.

What the Pebble Index 01 actually does
Index 01 has a microphone, physical button, wireless connectivity, internal memory, and a non-rechargeable battery. It is designed to be worn mainly on the index finger. Press or hold the button, record a short thought, and let the phone app handle the useful parts later.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press or hold the ring’s button.
- Speak into its microphone.
- The ring stores the audio locally.
- When the phone is in range, the recording transfers to the Pebble app.
- The app transcribes and interprets it, then sends it to a selected action or service.
Pebble says the ring cannot record unless the button is pressed, so it is not intended to function as an always-listening assistant. The phone is essential to the main experience: Index 01 is primarily an input and storage device, while transcription and language-model processing happen in the mobile app.

What it does not do
Despite the “smart ring” label, Index 01 is not presented as a health or fitness wearable. The published specifications do not identify the biometric sensors normally associated with rings such as Oura, Samsung Galaxy Ring, or Ultrahuman. Do not buy it expecting:
- Heart-rate monitoring
- Sleep tracking
- Blood-oxygen readings
- Temperature trends
- Step counts or workout metrics
- A wellness dashboard
It is also not a standalone AI assistant. You need a compatible iPhone or Android phone for transcription and most automated actions.

Notes are only the starting point
Pebble says Index 01 can be configured for notes and reminders, calendar events, timers and alarms, iOS Reminders, Obsidian, Google Tasks, Android music control, Tasker actions, webhooks, MCP integrations, and smart-home controls through services such as Home Assistant or Google Home.
These features should not be treated as equally simple or equally mature. Basic note-taking may be suitable for ordinary users, while Tasker, webhooks, MCPs, smart-home control, and custom app changes are better suited to technically capable users. Pebble says its mobile app is open source, allowing users to modify or fork it and build custom workflows.
The company’s July 2026 software update describes the expanding integration approach, while the mass-production update warns that the software is new and may still contain bugs or rough edges.
Privacy: local-first, not automatically cloud-free
Pebble’s advertised workflow is local-first. The ring does not require an internet connection to capture audio, recordings move to the paired phone, and speech-to-text and language-model processing are described as running locally in the app.

If you configure a webhook, MCP server, smart-home service, messaging destination, or another third-party integration, the resulting information may be transmitted outside the device.

Price and availability
Pebble announced Index 01 on December 9, 2025, with a $75 preorder price and a stated later price of $99. The original product information targeted worldwide shipping in March 2026.
That shipping target should not be confused with universal availability. In a July 24, 2026 update, Pebble said Index 01 had entered mass production but also cautioned that manufacturing and fulfillment could take time and that delays were possible. As of August 18, 2026, the verified position is that the ring is in mass production—not that every order has shipped or that it is broadly in stock in every country.
Actual fulfillment can depend on order date, ring size, color, destination, and the production schedule. Buyers should check the official purchase page for the latest shipping information rather than relying on the original March target.
The battery is the major compromise
Index 01 does not charge. Its battery is non-replaceable, and Pebble describes it as lasting years under average standby and occasional-use conditions. That does not mean the ring is effectively permanent.
Launch reporting cited approximately 12–15 total hours of recording before the battery is exhausted. Those are different measurements:
- Calendar life: potentially years of ordinary standby and brief recordings, according to Pebble.
- Active recording capacity: roughly 12–15 hours as reported at launch.
There is no honest way to convert the recording estimate into an exact number of years without knowing how often you record, how long each memo is, standby drain, temperature, battery variation, and software behavior. A person recording occasional 10-second reminders may get far longer practical use than someone dictating extended voice notes every day.
When the battery approaches exhaustion, Pebble says the app will notify the user. The company has also described returning the ring for recycling and purchasing another one. The low price makes replacement less expensive than replacing a premium health ring, but Index 01 is still electronics designed for eventual replacement rather than indefinite rechargeable use.

Pebble says the ring can tolerate hand-washing, dishes, showering, and ordinary wet conditions, but it does not recommend swimming. “Water-resistant” is the appropriate description; it is not a waterproof swimming wearable.

The exposed button and microphone also create practical durability considerations. Pebble warns that the ring can be scratched or banged up, that the microphone opening may become clogged, and that the silicone button can wear down. These are design considerations, not documented failure rates. The company lists a 30-day warranty against manufacturing defects after receipt, so buyers should understand the warranty window and return process before ordering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How it compares with health-focused smart rings
Index 01 competes with health rings only in the broad sense that all are worn on a finger. Functionally, it is closer to a voice-note tool, shortcut button, or phone assistant.
| Device type | Best for | Key difference from Index 01 |
|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring 4 | Sleep, recovery, and wellness tracking | Starts at $349 in the U.S. and requires a $5.99 monthly or $69.99 annual membership for the full experience. |
| Samsung Galaxy Ring | Biometric tracking within Samsung Health | Listed at $399.99 in the U.S.; rechargeable and focused on health data. |
| Ultrahuman Ring | Subscription-free health and fitness tracking | Still a biometric health wearable, not a physical voice-capture button. |
| Phone, smartwatch, or voice recorder | General voice capture | Usually more capable, rechargeable, or standalone, but potentially less discreet or convenient. |
This is not a feature-for-feature comparison. Oura, Samsung, and Ultrahuman justify their prices through health and fitness data; Index 01 justifies its price through quick capture and automation.

Who should buy Index 01?
Index 01 makes sense if you frequently think of reminders while walking, driving, cooking, exercising, or working with your hands and do not want to pull out your phone. It is also a plausible low-cost supplement to a smartwatch or smartphone, particularly for Pebble enthusiasts, open-source users, privacy-conscious buyers, and developers who want a physical trigger for custom automations.
It is a poor fit if you want sleep, heart-rate, fitness, or wellness tracking; dislike phone-dependent accessories; need a rechargeable product; record long voice notes; swim with your wearables; or expect the polished support of an established mainstream platform.
Before ordering, consider four questions:
- Will pressing a button on your finger be more convenient than using your phone or watch?
- Are you comfortable with the ring eventually needing replacement?
- Will you use only basic notes, or are you prepared to configure integrations yourself?
- Can you accept potential production delays and first-generation software?
Verdict
Pebble Index 01 is interesting precisely because it is not really a conventional smart ring. At $75 for preorder, or a stated $99 later price, it offers an inexpensive, intentional way to capture fleeting thoughts and trigger phone-based actions without a subscription or continuous listening.
That value disappears if you are shopping for health data. It also becomes less compelling if a non-rechargeable battery, phone dependency, immature software, limited water resistance, or uncertain fulfillment is unacceptable. Treat it as a wearable voice-capture button with open-ended software—not as a cheaper Oura or Samsung Galaxy Ring—and the product’s trade-offs become much easier to judge.
