To hard reset a Galaxy Watch5: hold the Home/Power and Back buttons until “Rebooting” appears, quickly press Home/Power repeatedly to open Reboot mode, select Recovery, then choose Wipe data/factory reset and confirm Factory data reset.
This permanently erases the watch’s personal data, apps, settings and phone pairing. If the watch still works, use the normal reset menu instead. The recovery method is mainly for a forgotten PIN, inaccessible menus, freezing or boot loops.

Restart, factory reset and hard reset: what is the difference?
- Restart or force restart: reboots the operating system and normally keeps your data.
- Factory reset: erases personal data, installed apps and app data, settings and the phone pairing.
- Recovery-mode reset: a factory reset started from the boot/recovery menus when you cannot use the normal interface.
Holding both buttons does not erase the watch by itself. It first opens the reboot process; you must separately select the factory-reset commands.
Samsung’s instructions cover the Galaxy Watch4, Watch5 and Watch6 Wear OS models. Menus and button behavior can vary by software version, model, region and carrier.

Samsung’s official reset instructions are the primary reference if your screen differs from the steps below.
When should you reset a Galaxy Watch5?
Try a normal restart first if the watch is temporarily frozen, slow to respond, affected by a one-time app crash or experiencing minor software instability.
A factory reset is more appropriate when:
- You forgot the screen-lock PIN.
- The watch repeatedly freezes or boot-loops.
- Pairing problems continue after ordinary troubleshooting.
- You are selling, returning or giving away the watch.
- You want a clean setup after a major phone or software change.
A reset cannot repair a failed battery, defective charger, damaged display or buttons, liquid damage or another hardware fault.
Before resetting: essential checklist
- Charge the watch. Keep it sufficiently charged or connected to its charger during the process.
- Back up recoverable data. If the watch still connects, use the backup options in the Galaxy Wearable app.
- Confirm your Samsung account credentials. A recovery reset may require the same Samsung account previously used on the watch during setup.
- Record important details. Note app logins, mobile-service information and anything you will need to configure again.
- Check whether it is an LTE model. Mobile service may need to be reactivated through your carrier after the reset.
Only backed-up or synchronized information can normally be restored. A factory reset is not reversible for data that exists only on the watch.
Try a force restart first if the watch is frozen
On the watch, press and hold the Home/Power button and Back button together until the watch restarts or shows the reboot indicator. The Home/Power button is normally the upper button and Back is normally the lower button.
This is a non-destructive restart, not a factory reset. If the watch becomes usable afterward and you still need to erase it, use Settings → General → Reset.

Method 1: reset from the watch
Use this method when the watch is unlocked and responsive:

- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Review the warning and confirm using the on-screen control.
- Follow the prompts until the reset begins.
This is generally the safest and simplest method because it avoids navigating the recovery menu.
Method 2: reset through Galaxy Wearable
If the Watch5 is still connected to your phone:
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Watch settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Confirm the reset.
Some versions may omit the intermediate Watch settings step. This method is unavailable if the watch is disconnected, locked, frozen or unable to communicate with the phone.
Method 3: hard reset through Recovery mode
Use this procedure when you forgot the PIN, cannot access Settings, the watch is stuck in a boot loop or the normal reset fails.
- Turn the watch off if possible.
- Press and hold Home/Power and Back at the same time.
- Keep holding until “Rebooting” appears at the bottom of the display.
- Immediately press the Home/Power button repeatedly until the Reboot mode menu appears.
- Continue pressing Home/Power until Recovery is highlighted.
- Press and hold Home/Power to select Recovery.
- Wait for the recovery menu to load.
- Swipe down to Wipe data/factory reset.
- Swipe right to select it.
- Swipe down to Factory data reset.
- Swipe right to confirm.
- When the wipe finishes, swipe right to reboot the watch.
Samsung warns that pausing too long in the reboot menu can cause the watch to start normally. If your recovery screen is text-based rather than touch-based, follow the button instructions displayed on that screen.

If you forgot the PIN
You cannot use the ordinary Settings route without unlocking the watch. Use the Recovery procedure above to erase it.
A reset does not remove account-protection requirements. Afterward, the watch may require sign-in with the same Samsung account that was previously associated with it. Recovery mode is not a legitimate way to bypass account verification or theft protections.
Why some recovery guides look different
Carrier-specific instructions, firmware versions and Watch5 variants can show different timing, labels or controls. For example, some carrier guides describe different button presses after the Samsung logo appears.

What happens after the reset?
The Watch5 returns to its initial setup state. Personal data, installed apps and settings are removed, and the phone pairing is deleted.
- Open Galaxy Wearable on your phone.
- Pair the watch again when prompted.
- Sign in to the required Samsung or Google accounts.
- Restore available backup data.
- Reinstall apps through the watch’s Play Store or the available setup options.
- Reconfigure notifications, health settings, alarms, Wi-Fi, wallet features and other preferences.
On an LTE model, mobile service may need carrier reactivation. Resetting does not necessarily cancel or transfer your cellular plan; the result depends on the carrier and plan.

If you are selling or giving away the watch
Back up anything you need, reset the watch, and confirm that it is no longer paired with your phone. Samsung also recommends unpairing its Bluetooth connection during the handoff process.
If the next owner sees a request for your Samsung account, do not recommend bypass tools. Complete the ownership transfer properly or contact Samsung support.
Recovery mode will not appear: troubleshooting
- Charge the watch: an empty battery or faulty charger can prevent recovery mode from loading.
- Press both buttons simultaneously: make sure Home/Power and Back are held together.
- Wait for “Rebooting”: do not release at the Samsung logo.
- Start pressing Home/Power quickly: begin repeated presses as soon as the reboot indicator appears.
- Repeat if it boots normally: shut it down if possible and try again.
- Use a normal reset if the watch becomes responsive: go to Settings or Galaxy Wearable instead.
- Stop if hardware appears faulty: no display, no charging, damaged buttons or a permanent logo screen may indicate a power or hardware problem rather than a reset problem.
If the watch remains stuck after a successful reset, or cannot charge or display anything, seek Samsung or carrier service rather than repeatedly attempting the same button sequence.
Should you wipe the cache instead?
Some recovery menus may offer Wipe cache partition. If present, it is potentially less destructive than Wipe data/factory reset because it is not the command that erases user data.
However, cache options and procedures are firmware-dependent, and clearing the cache is not a guaranteed Watch5 fix. Avoid the factory-reset option unless you intend to erase the watch.

Can I reset a Galaxy Watch5 without the PIN?
Yes. Use Recovery mode. Afterward, the previously associated Samsung account may still be required.
Will a reset remove the Samsung account?
It does not guarantee that account verification will be removed. A reset can leave the watch requiring the Samsung account previously used on it.
Does resetting cancel LTE service?
Not necessarily. LTE service may require reactivation through the carrier after setup, and the account or plan remains subject to carrier rules.
Will a reset fix battery drain?
It may help with a software problem, but it cannot repair battery wear, charging faults or other hardware defects.
How long does the reset take?
The timing varies with the watch’s condition and software. Keep it charged and do not interrupt the process once the wipe has started.
