A watch bezel is the ring around the crystal. It may be a plain or textured frame, or it may carry a scale that works with a particular hand or chronograph function. To identify what yours does, first check its markings and whether it rotates; then match the scale to the hand or feature it is designed to use.
“Twelve types” is a handy guide, not a set of mutually exclusive construction categories. Some labels describe appearance, such as plain or fluted; others describe a function, such as dive timing or GMT; still others describe a scale, such as tachymeter or telemeter. A single watch can combine more than one of these.

How to identify and read a bezel
- Look for markings. A smooth or grooved ring may be decorative. Numbers, minute marks, cardinal points, or paired scales suggest a task-specific function.
- Check whether it rotates. Turn it gently only if the watch’s instructions allow it. Some functional scales rotate; others are fixed. If it rotates, note the direction and any stops rather than assuming every bezel works the same way.
- Find the matching hand or function. Elapsed-time scales commonly use the minute hand; GMT scales use a 24-hour hand; tachymeters use the elapsed-time hand of a chronograph. Other scales have their own procedures.
- Check the watch’s manual. Similar-looking scales can be read differently, and setup—especially for rotating GMT, countdown, or calculation bezels—varies by model.
A bezel’s appearance alone does not establish its construction or purpose. A tachymeter, for example, may be printed on the dial ring rather than the outer bezel, depending on the watch. Citizen’s functions guide describes that variation and explains tachymeter and approximate compass use.

Plain
A plain bezel has a smooth, unmarked ring and no scale to interpret. It mainly serves as a frame or design element; bezel construction differs across watches, so do not assume every ring secures the crystal in the same way.

Fluted
A fluted bezel has grooves or ridges, usually as a decorative treatment. The grooves are not a timing scale: there is nothing to align or calculate from them unless the watch has separate functional markings.
Timing bezels: elapsed time, countdown, and regatta
Dive or elapsed-time
A typical elapsed-time bezel has a 60-minute scale and a zero marker, often on a rotating ring. At the start of an interval, align zero with the minute hand. The hand’s position against the bezel then indicates elapsed minutes. This is a timing convenience, not a dive-safety system; follow the watch maker’s instructions for the specific model. Nixon’s bezel guide describes functional and decorative bezel uses, including countdown and compass functions.

Countdown
A countdown bezel is arranged to show time remaining before a target rather than time elapsed after a start. Set the desired remaining interval against the relevant hand as the model’s scale directs, then read the hand’s progress toward zero. Do not assume a countdown scale can be used exactly like an elapsed-time count-up bezel: the markings and setup determine the reading.
Yacht timer or regatta countdown
A regatta timer helps track the countdown to a race start. It may use a marked countdown bezel, a dedicated chronograph display, or both; there is no single universal dial layout. Read the printed interval and use the watch’s operating instructions to start and interpret it.

Scales that calculate a rate or distance
Tachymeter
A tachymeter converts a timed interval over a known distance into a rate reading. It does not time the interval by itself: start the chronograph at the beginning of the measured distance and stop it at the end, then read the tachymeter where the chronograph’s elapsed-time hand points. The result’s units follow the distance unit used—for example, a rate per hour when timing a kilometre or a mile. Markings and placement vary, and the scale may sit on the dial ring rather than the outer bezel. Citizen’s guide explains the tachymeter function and placement variation.
Telemeter
A telemeter estimates distance from the time gap between seeing an event and hearing its sound. Start timing when the event is seen and stop when its sound arrives; read the result on the telemeter scale. The estimate depends on sound travel, and the units and operating details depend on the scale printed on that watch.

Pulsometer
A pulsometer converts a counted pulse interval into a pulse-rate reading. Check the count basis printed on the watch, count that number of pulses, and read the indicated rate as directed by the scale. It is a watch scale, not a medical device or an assurance of clinical accuracy.

A decimal scale divides elapsed time into decimal subdivisions, often shown as 0–100. It is useful for expressing elapsed time as a fraction or percentage of a unit; it is not interchangeable with a standard minute scale, whose markings represent minutes and seconds.

Navigation and time-zone bezels
GMT or 24-hour
A GMT or 24-hour scale works with a 24-hour hand to display another time zone. Read that hand against the 24-hour scale; a fixed scale and a rotating scale may be set or used differently. Some watches can indicate a third time zone by rotating the bezel, but the setup depends on the model. WatchTime’s guide to rotating bezels distinguishes GMT use from dive, pilot, and world-time applications and describes reading a GMT scale with a dedicated hand.
Compass
A compass bezel uses cardinal points or degree markings. Some analog-watch methods use the hour hand and the sun to estimate orientation, then the bezel to identify approximate directions. The method is sensitive to conditions and watch setup; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and do not use it instead of proper navigation tools. Citizen’s instructions describe compass use as approximate.
Slide rule
A slide-rule bezel has dense inner and outer logarithmic scales, often associated with pilot watches. Rotating and aligning the scales supports calculations and conversions. The scales can be unintuitive, and the exact procedure depends on their layout; use the model manual for a specific calculation rather than assuming one universal reading method.
Quick comparison: what the markings need
| Bezel or scale | What to look for | What reads it | Task |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain or fluted | Smooth ring or decorative grooves; no functional scale | None | Framing or style |
| Dive / elapsed-time | Minute marks and a zero marker; often rotating | Minute hand | Elapsed minutes |
| Countdown / regatta | Remaining-time markings; layout varies | Hand specified by the scale; sometimes a chronograph display | Time remaining to a target or race start |
| Tachymeter | Calibrated rate values | Chronograph elapsed-time hand | Rate over a known distance |
| Telemeter | Distance values for a time gap | Timed interval, usually measured with a chronograph | Approximate distance from an event’s sound |
| Pulsometer | Pulse-rate values and a printed count basis | Timed pulse count | Pulse-rate conversion |
| Decimal | Decimal subdivisions, often 0–100 | Elapsed-time reading | Decimal fraction or percentage of time |
| GMT / 24-hour | 24-hour markings; fixed or rotating | 24-hour hand | Another time zone |
| Compass | Cardinal points or degree markings | Model-specific method using the watch and sun | Approximate orientation |
| Slide rule | Dense, paired logarithmic scales | Aligned scale markings | Calculations or conversions |
These labels describe different aspects of a watch, not twelve exclusive designs: a scale can be fixed or rotating, and a single bezel may combine more than one use. For an unfamiliar scale, identify the markings, find the hand or complication that matches them, and consult the model manual before relying on a reading.
