People wear a watch with its face turned inward for practical reasons such as reducing its exposure to some knocks or reflections, and for personal reasons such as comfort, habit, or style. These are context-dependent rationales—not six proven benefits: available sources do not establish universal improvements to health, circulation, smartwatch accuracy, or injury prevention.
Why turn a watch face inward?
With the dial facing the palm, a wearer may find it easier to read from certain hand positions or prefer how the watch feels and looks. The trade-off depends on the task: inward orientation can make a dial less convenient to read in other positions, and it does not guarantee protection from damage or unwanted attention.

A specialist discussion of tactical use describes several of the reasons below, including reduced glare, protection from some impacts, and readability in particular positions. These are reported rationales, not controlled evidence that inward-facing wear is faster, safer, or better for everyone. The precise historical origin of the practice is difficult to establish, and it should not be described as a universal military rule. Watches of Espionage’s discussion also notes personal and cultural influences.
Six reasons people may wear a watch inward
1. To expose the watch to fewer knocks in some situations
Turning the face toward the palm may reduce its exposure to certain bumps, depending on the wearer’s movements and surroundings. It cannot make a watch damage-proof, and no reviewed source quantifies how much protection this provides.

2. To reduce visible reflections in some settings
An inward-facing dial may produce less visible reflection from some viewing angles. This is a situational rationale described in tactical contexts, not a guarantee of concealment or a benefit in every environment.
3. To see the dial from a particular hand position
Some positions can bring an inward-facing watch into the wearer’s line of sight. The practitioner discussion describes possible readability while prone or handling a weapon; that specialized example does not establish that inward wear is generally quicker or easier to read.

4. To check the time while wearing bulky gloves
The same article reports that some former special-operations members found an inward-facing watch easier to check with bulky gloves. This is an attributed experience in a specific context, not a universal result for all gloves, watches, or wearers.
5. Because it feels more comfortable during a particular activity
Comfort varies by person, watch, and task. Inward orientation may suit someone’s preference, but the sources do not establish a general ergonomic advantage. Keep the watch stable without overtightening it, especially if it has wrist sensors.

6. For personal style, habit, or group culture
Some people choose inward wear because they like the appearance, are accustomed to it, or share a group convention. These are valid personal reasons, not physiological benefits. TAG Heuer’s style guide says to wear a watch on whichever wrist suits you best; that advice concerns wrist choice generally and is not an endorsement of inward-facing wear.

Casio and Garmin manufacturer guidance emphasizes sensor placement, fit, and stability—not turning the watch face toward the palm. Their instructions do not say inward orientation improves wrist-based heart-rate readings. Follow the guidance for your specific model rather than treating watch orientation as an accuracy fix.

- Casio’s wearing guidance warns that a tight band during monitoring can contribute to sweat and skin irritation, and recommends a looser fit for normal wear.
These are manufacturer instructions for particular watches, not a universal prescription for every model. If readings are inconsistent, check the model’s placement and fit instructions before changing orientation.

Choose based on the task rather than assuming one direction is always better. Consider how easily you can read the dial, whether the watch is exposed to knocks or reflections in your environment, how comfortable it feels, and—on a smartwatch—whether it maintains stable sensor contact.
For everyday wear, either orientation is a personal choice. If you wear the watch inward for a specific activity, check whether you can still read and operate it comfortably, and make sure the strap does not restrict movement or irritate your skin.
What inward-facing wear does not establish
The available sources do not establish that wearing a watch inward improves blood flow, prevents injuries, or increases smartwatch heart-rate accuracy. They also do not support claims that all soldiers use this orientation or that it is a standard military method. The defensible case is narrower: some wearers report situational advantages, while comfort and style remain personal.
