What counts as official authentication?
AP distinguishes between checking its records and examining the actual watch. The documents are not interchangeable:

AP’s Customer Service page explains the distinction. A matching number, warranty card, box, or seller-provided document is not a substitute for the certificate.
How to verify a watch before buying or after purchase

Gather details without treating them as proof
Ask for clear photographs, the claimed collection and reference, case and movement identifiers where safely available, and any service history. Use these details to identify inconsistencies and prepare questions for AP; they do not establish authenticity.

Check whether the claimed configuration makes sense
Compare the reference, materials, dial, complication, and other visible features with reliable AP descriptions. A mismatch is a reason to pause and ask AP, not enough on its own to declare a watch counterfeit. AP does not publish one universal visual checklist that can authenticate every model from a photo.

Check the seller and official route
For a purchase, prefer AP’s authorized network. Use AP’s boutique and authorized retailer information and its after-sales network information to locate an official channel. If a seller resists a professional examination, treat that as a reason not to proceed until the watch can be checked.

Arrange an examination by AP
Contact an AP boutique, service center, or authorized retailer and request the process for submitting the watch. AP says an AP-trained watchmaker must examine it; the watch can be sent to the Le Brassus manufacture for authentication. Confirm the process with the local channel, since the available arrangements may depend on the country.

Request the document that answers your question
If your goal is authentication, ask for the Certificate of Authenticity—not an Extract from the Archives. AP notes that complimentary pick-up for service or document requests may be available in some countries; check locally. AP does not establish a universal fee, turnaround time, or country-by-country availability for the certificate, so confirm those details before submitting the watch.
What serial and movement numbers can—and cannot—tell you
AP records watches by case and movement numbers. Its article on serial numbers describes the numbering system developed as the model concept evolved from 1951 and gives historical examples. These numbers can help trace a watch’s records and service history, but AP warns that a record match does not authenticate the physical watch. A genuine number could be copied or associated with a different watch, so a lookup cannot replace examination.
A mismatch is a prompt to stop and seek AP’s guidance, not a definitive diagnosis by itself. AP service terms say replacement cases or movements can receive new serial numbers, with the change retained in AP records. Check any discrepancy against the watch’s service history through an official channel.

A watch can include counterfeit or hybrid components even when some parts are genuine. AP’s March 2024 UK service terms say it will not service a watch when examination reveals counterfeit parts, including counterfeit or hybrid pieces, and that it will document visual and technical indicators. The same UK terms reserve AP’s right to limit or decline service for watches modified in appearance or function without AP approval. These are terms for the UK document; confirm the applicable terms in your country.

The decisive step remains examination by AP.
Use visual clues for screening, not a verdict
- Compare the claimed model and reference with AP information, including the stated materials, dial layout, and complications.
- Look for inconsistencies in finishing, case or bracelet construction, movement information visible without opening the watch, and the paperwork’s account of the watch.
- Treat conflicting details as reasons to pause and request professional review—not as proof that a watch is genuine or counterfeit.
- Do not open the case yourself. AP directs owners to trained watchmakers; amateur opening can damage the watch or compromise its assessment.
AP’s Spanish FAQ asks, “¿Cómo puedo saber si he adquirido un reloj falsificado?”—in English, “How can I know if I have acquired a counterfeit watch?” AP’s stated answer points owners toward professional examination, rather than a do-it-yourself serial check.
