In difficult reception—such as among tall buildings or under dense trees—multi-band or dual-frequency tracking may help, but it uses more battery and cannot eliminate every error.
Get a strong GPS fix before you start
Begin the activity outdoors rather than waiting for GPS indoors or under a roof. On COROS, wait until the satellite icon is solid, then allow about another minute for the signal to settle before starting. Starting before the watch has a good fix can leave the opening portion of a run with weaker position data. If acquisition is taking unusually long, stay in place outdoors while the watch searches rather than beginning immediately.
Choose a GPS mode that fits your watch and route
More satellite systems or frequencies can help when signals are obstructed or reflected, but support differs by model and higher-performance modes can use more battery. Check your watch’s manual or official mode list before changing settings.

Find the setting without assuming every menu is the same
On the Forerunner 55, Garmin documents this example path: Hold UP → Activities & Apps → select an activity → activity settings → GPS. Other Forerunners can have different paths or choices, so use the manual for your model. Forerunner 55 GPS setting instructions.
For the COROS PACE 2, the documented path is Toolbox → System → More Settings → GPS → Mode. Newer COROS watches may offer satellite mode through a Control Center option instead; use instructions for the specific generation. PACE 2 setup instructions and COROS mode guidance.

Refresh COROS satellite data after travel or a long gap
After long-distance travel or several days without syncing the COROS app, open the app’s Profile page and check for a satellite-data prompt. COROS says the app downloads seven days of satellite schedule data and transfers it when the watch connects. If that information is stale, accurate positioning may take two minutes or longer; stay outdoors and in place while the watch updates and acquires satellites. COROS GPS troubleshooting guidance.
Pause an outdoor GPS activity when you go inside
If you enter a building during an outdoor activity, pause the recording rather than letting the watch continue searching for GPS indoors. COROS warns that continued indoor searching can affect the recorded distance and track. Resume the activity when you return outdoors and can obtain a signal. COROS GPS troubleshooting guidance.
Use AutoLocate only on the Garmin models it covers
Garmin’s AutoLocate instructions concern legacy fitness devices, including the Forerunner 101, 201, 205, 301, 305, 310XT, and 910XT. Garmin says the procedure may help when satellite data is stale or corrupted and advises allowing 15–20 minutes outdoors afterward. These are not universal button steps: do not apply them to a modern Forerunner unless its own manual instructs you to. Garmin AutoLocate instructions.
What GPS accuracy to expect
GPS watches estimate position from satellite signals; a clean start and suitable mode can improve the odds of a consistent record, but no setting guarantees an exact distance or line on every route. COROS states that its wearables are accurate within 3 meters (10 feet) under normal conditions with a strong signal. Garmin gives approximate ideal-condition figures of about ±2 meters (6 feet) for compatible multi-band devices and ±3 meters (10 feet) for other models. These are manufacturers’ qualified performance figures, not guarantees for a particular run. COROS; Garmin.
Tall buildings, tree cover, canyons, and signal refraction over large bodies of water can block or distort satellite signals. Garmin says multi-band can help compatible watches reject reflected signals and address some atmospheric errors; COROS likewise identifies obstructed or refracted signals as causes of discrepancies in pace, distance, and track. A difficult environment may still produce imperfect data even with the strongest available mode.
