How to Choose Between the Garmin Forerunner 970 and COROS PACE 4 Pro for Training

The Forerunner 970 favors training and recovery analysis, on-watch routing, and connected services; the PACE 4 Pro favors lower listed pricing, lighter weight, and longer stated battery life.

Choose the Garmin Forerunner 970 if you want deeper training and recovery analysis, on-watch route creation and rerouting, and connected features such as Garmin Pay. Choose the COROS PACE 4 Pro if a lower listed price, lighter nylon-band configuration, and longer manufacturer-stated battery life matter more. Both are multisport GPS watches with AMOLED displays, offline maps, and route guidance; the better fit depends on which features you will use.

Battery life: compare the same kind of use

Garmin states up to 15 days in smartwatch mode and up to 26 hours in GPS mode for the Forerunner 970. Tom’s Guide reports 21 hours for multi-band GPS, a different configuration that should not be treated as equivalent to Garmin’s general GPS figure. Garmin Forerunner 55, GPS Running Watch with Daily Suggested Workouts, Up to 2 Weeks of Battery Life, Black - 010-02562-00
  • Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
  • Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
  • Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
  • Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
  • Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more

COROS estimates up to 21 days of daily use, 60 hours in High / All Systems GPS, or 40 hours in Max dual-frequency GPS. With always-on display enabled, its stated estimates are 7 days, 45 hours, and 30 hours respectively. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes; music, navigation, screen settings, and satellite mode change battery consumption. COROS PACE 4 Pro purchase page, COROS battery specifications

For frequent long events, the PACE 4 Pro’s higher stated GPS endurance is a meaningful advantage, but match the mode to your planned use. If your training depends on multi-band positioning or an always-on display, compare the estimate for that mode rather than relying on the headline maximum.

Navigation and maps

Forerunner 970: more route work on the watch

Garmin describes full-color maps, dynamic round-trip routing, and the ability to generate a replacement route of the same mileage if you go off course. Tom’s Guide characterizes Garmin’s maps as routable. That makes the 970 the stronger choice if you want to adjust or recover a route without first returning to a phone or another planning tool. PACE 4 Pro: offline maps and guided routes

COROS documents downloadable global landscape and topographic maps, plus route navigation with turn and off-route alerts. In Tom’s Guide’s account, routes are generally created or imported using the COROS app or another platform before following them on the watch. That workflow can suit runners who plan routes in advance; Garmin has the edge for on-watch route generation and rerouting. COROS PACE 4 Pro product page, Tom’s Guide comparison

Training analysis and accessories

What Garmin adds

Garmin lists training readiness, training status, recovery time, adaptive workouts, and running tolerance among the Forerunner 970’s training tools. It also highlights running economy and step speed loss. Garmin says those two measurements require the optional HRM 600 chest strap; they are not features to assume you will get from the watch alone. Garmin Forerunner 970 product page, Garmin launch announcement

What COROS emphasizes

COROS highlights training load, pace strategy, VO2 max, running fitness, structured workouts, and route building. The PACE 4 Pro also connects over Bluetooth to heart-rate monitors, cycling power meters, cadence sensors, speed sensors, and the optional COROS POD 2. Consider the COROS approach if those tools and planned workouts cover the feedback you want without Garmin’s broader readiness and recovery feature set. COROS PACE 4 Pro purchase page

Everyday features and connected functions

Garmin lists Garmin Pay, Connect IQ, and support for music-streaming services in its announcement. Check current service availability and phone compatibility for your region before relying on a particular payment, app, or music workflow. Garmin announcement, Tom’s Guide comparison

What one reviewer’s accuracy testing can—and cannot—tell you

In Tom’s Guide’s field comparisons, the reviewer found the two watches performed strongly: distances were nearly identical in one workout, and heart-rate readings were usually close to a chest strap. This is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled study or a guarantee for every route, body, fit, or workout. Tom’s Guide comparison
