For the most dependable outdoor run data your watch can provide, finish setup, choose the outdoor Run activity, fit the watch correctly, and wait for both GPS and heart rate to acquire before starting. Then select a satellite mode supported by your exact model and suited to your route: a clear view of the sky helps, while buildings, trees, and terrain can disrupt reception.
Set up the watch for your first run
Setup menus and button layouts vary by generation. Use the model name printed on the watch or shown in its companion app to find the matching instructions rather than assuming every Forerunner or PACE uses the same path.

Garmin Forerunner
Start with Garmin’s Forerunner getting-started resource and the owner’s manual for your specific model. Garmin’s Forerunner 265 series support resource covers setup, controls, status icons, fit, charging, and power management; other models may differ in both features and menu names. Confirm the GPS options in your model’s manual or watch menus.

Before an outdoor run, select the Run activity and let the watch acquire satellites. Do not begin while it is still searching. The available satellite settings vary: some Forerunners offer GPS-only or All Systems, while some add multi-band or Auto Select/SatIQ. Multi-band can improve positioning in challenging environments, and Auto Select/SatIQ-capable watches can choose a mode based on conditions. These features are not universal, and higher-capability settings can use more battery. See Garmin’s GPS settings guidance for details that apply to supported watches.

Follow the setup prompts, including those for wearing hand and notifications. The COROS pairing guide describes this flow; button names and menus can vary on older PACE models, so consult the guide for your watch.
Select the outdoor Run activity. Wait for a full GPS signal and a heart-rate reading; COROS recommends giving GPS another minute to settle after acquisition. Its getting-started guide also explains how to begin an activity.

Choose a satellite mode that fits the route
Use the options your exact watch supports. COROS recommends All Systems On for most situations. On supported models, Dual Frequency is intended for difficult reception—such as dense buildings, canyons, or heavy forest—and uses more power. COROS calls Dual Frequency its most accurate satellite mode, but this is a manufacturer description of the mode, not a guarantee of a particular route’s result or a feature present on every PACE. The COROS GPS mode guide explains the options.
For a Forerunner, check the manual for the satellite choices on that model. Some watches offer multi-band or automatic mode selection; others do not. A higher-accuracy mode may consume more battery, so the best choice depends on both reception conditions and how long you need the watch to run between charges. Garmin describes its model-specific options in its GPS settings guidance.

Understand what GPS accuracy can and cannot promise
GPS reception depends on the surroundings. Open sky generally gives a watch a better reception environment than a route through tall buildings, heavy tree cover, or a canyon. COROS also notes that refraction near large bodies of water can contribute to discrepancies. These conditions may affect the recorded track, distance, or pace even when the watch is working as intended. See COROS GPS troubleshooting guidance.
COROS states that wearable GPS devices are accurate within 3 meters (10 feet) of actual location “under normal conditions with a strong signal.” That is COROS’s published qualification, not a guaranteed accuracy for every point, route, watch, or pace reading. GPS-derived pace and distance can still differ when signal conditions are poor. COROS’s troubleshooting page was updated September 28, 2026: GPS troubleshooting.

Improve wrist heart-rate readings
Wrist optical heart rate is a separate measurement from satellite-based pace and distance. Garmin recommends wearing the watch snugly above the wrist bone so it does not shift, without tightening it enough to restrict circulation. Keep the optical sensor clean, use the correct activity profile, keep software up to date, and check that your user profile is correct. Garmin notes that optical heart-rate monitoring has inherent limitations; consult its heart-rate accuracy guidance.

COROS likewise describes wrist optical readings as estimates. If heart-rate zones or interval readings matter more than convenience, a compatible chest strap can be an option; COROS supports compatible ANT+ or Bluetooth straps, and its guidance notes they may track intervals better. Check your exact watch’s connection support. A strap can change the heart-rate source, but it does not improve GPS-derived pace or distance. See COROS heart-rate guidance.

Use the activity that matches the run
For an outdoor run, choose the standard outdoor Run profile so the watch records GPS data. If you are running on a track, COROS Track Run is designed to track track laps and distance, including lane selection on supported activity flows. For a treadmill or other indoor run, use Indoor Run instead: COROS estimates pace and distance from cadence and a cadence-pace model, with post-run calibration or a foot pod as possible aids. Indoor calibration is not a replacement for the outdoor GPS setup described above. See COROS activity guidance.
Before you press Start
- Confirm the model. Find the exact Forerunner or PACE instructions; do not assume menu labels or satellite features are shared across generations.
- Choose outdoor Run. Use Track Run for supported track-lap workflows and Indoor Run for treadmill or indoor activity.
- Fit and check the watch. Wear it snugly above the wrist bone, keep the optical sensor clean, and verify your profile.
- Wait for acquisition. Start only after GPS and heart rate are available. With COROS, allow an additional minute after full GPS acquisition for the signal to settle.
- Match mode to conditions. Use a supported mode suited to the route; consider a higher-capability option in difficult reception areas, while accounting for battery use.
These setup recommendations come from manufacturer support documentation. They do not establish that one brand or model is more accurate than another in a controlled comparison.
