For a more reliable Suunto GPS track, wait for the watch to acquire GPS outdoors before recording, sync it with the Suunto app to refresh assisted GPS data, and select the most frequent GPS fix rate your battery needs allow. Trees, buildings, terrain and model-specific settings can all affect results, so use the instructions for your exact watch rather than assuming every Suunto has the same menus.
Get a GPS fix before you start recording
Take the watch outdoors to a spot with as much open sky as practical. Open the sport mode you plan to use and wait until its GPS indicator confirms a fix before starting the activity. Buildings, trees, bridges, metal structures, mountains and ravines can weaken reception; moving to a more open starting point may help.

Acquisition time varies with the watch and conditions. Suunto says initial acquisition on the Suunto 5 may take 30 seconds or more; treat that as a model-specific guide, not a guarantee for every device. In difficult terrain or open-water swimming, wait a little longer even after the indicator appears. Suunto 5 navigation guidance and Suunto 7 support guidance both emphasize acquiring a signal in suitable conditions.

Refresh assisted GPS data and watch software
Pair and sync the watch with the Suunto app before a GPS activity. The app updates the watch’s GPS assistance data, which can help it find satellites. On watches that provide the status screen, check Settings > General > About > Assisted GPS. Suunto advises syncing again if the timestamp is older than a day or displays N/A. The exact display and availability can vary by model.

If the track remains inaccurate or the watch cannot get a fix, Suunto’s general troubleshooting sequence is to soft-reset the watch, sync it with the app, confirm the assisted GPS file updated, and install available watch software updates. If the problem persists, follow support instructions for the specific model; the available guidance does not identify one universal hardware cause. Choose a GPS fix rate that fits your activity
A more frequent GPS fix can record a more detailed track, but uses more battery. Lower-frequency settings extend battery life at the cost of track detail. Names and availability depend on the model, sport mode and battery configuration.

On Suunto 9 and 9 Baro, battery modes affect GPS fix rate. Consult the documentation for your precise model and software before changing a setting. On Suunto 9 and Suunto 9 Baro, FusedTrack uses motion-sensor information to fill in movement between less frequent GPS fixes. Suunto limits this feature to Running and Trail Running in specified Endurance, Ultra or Custom configurations. It is not a general replacement for frequent GPS fixes across all watches, sports or battery settings.

Some supported Suunto watches let you choose additional satellite navigation systems, such as GLONASS or Galileo; some models may also offer BeiDou. Additional systems can help in certain difficult environments, but enabling every available option is not a universal accuracy fix. Tall buildings may make GLONASS useful on some Spartan watches, while Suunto says it consumes more battery and is typically best left off in other conditions.
Satellite-system options and menu paths differ by model. Suunto lists Settings > Navigation > GPS system for several models, including Suunto 5, 5 Peak, 9 and 9 Peak, but check your own watch’s guide and software. For Spartan, GPS accuracy is configured in sport-mode options, and GLONASS is an environment-dependent choice. Model-specific checks
- Suunto 5 family: Check GPS accuracy in sport options on the watch or in the Suunto app. Suunto’s guide describes Best and Good settings and notes that navigation by route or POI automatically selects Best.
- Suunto 9 and 9 Baro: Battery mode changes GPS fix frequency; FusedTrack is limited to certain running modes and configurations.
- Suunto 7: Suunto describes a default one-second GPS fix rate and recommends open-sky acquisition, current satellite orbit data via Wi-Fi, and current software.
- Spartan: Configure GPS accuracy in sport-mode options. Consider GLONASS for challenging settings such as urban areas with tall buildings, accounting for its additional battery use.
Because controls and feature support vary across generations, use the support page for your exact watch before changing settings. Suunto’s general GPS guidance links the model differences to its product support material.
