How to Inspect a Watch Auction Listing and Spot Condition Risks

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A watch auction listing is evidence to assess, not a guarantee of authenticity, mechanical health, originality, or water resistance. Before bidding, compare the exact lot description with its condition report and photographs, ask what was actually inspected, and resolve uncertainties that could change your maximum bid.

What an auction listing can—and cannot—establish

Start with the specific sale’s lot description and terms. Record what the catalog states about the watch’s identity, condition, operation, repairs, and included items. Viewing rules and inspection access vary by auction, so rely on the terms for that sale rather than assumptions drawn from another auction.

A condition report is a description or opinion with a defined, potentially limited scope. Phillips says its report may not identify every mechanical replacement, restoration, or defect, and does not warrant that a watch in a water-resistant case is currently water-resistant. Sotheby’s similarly warns that condition reports may omit replacements or imperfections; it says watches are sold as viewed, should not be assumed operative, and are not warranted to be currently water-resistant. Phillips, Hong Kong Guide for Prospective Buyers: Watches; Sotheby’s, Guide for Buyers | Glossary & Important Notices: Watches.

Those policies do not establish what is true of an individual lot. Without the actual listing, sale documents, and qualified examination, the watch’s authenticity, component originality, movement health, current water resistance, and applicable buyer protections remain unverified.

How to inspect the listing before bidding

  1. Read the lot description and sale terms. Note the precise claims about identity, condition, operation, repairs, and accessories. Check how and when the auction permits in-person viewing, independent examination, and any other inspection.
  2. Request the condition report. Ask what was physically examined, whether the movement was inspected, and what known defects, repairs, replacements, or restorations the report covers. Ask explicitly what was not examined or cannot be confirmed; absence of a statement is not proof that a component is original or defect-free.
  3. Compare photographs with the description. Review the case, dial, hands, crystal, bezel, crown, and bracelet or strap. If movement images are provided, note what they show and what they do not. Look for damage, missing views, or details that seem inconsistent with the written description, then ask the specialist to clarify them. A photograph can help document visible features but cannot, by itself, establish authenticity or mechanical condition.
  4. Ask a qualified watchmaker to inspect the watch where permitted. Phillips advises prospective buyers to inspect before the auction and recommends that a competent watchmaker or restorer check a watch before use. Sotheby’s also advises arranging a qualified watchmaker’s inspection before purchase. Confirm the sale’s rules before arranging an examination or asking anyone to open the watch. Phillips buyer guidance; Sotheby’s buyer guidance.
  5. Check the costs and conditions of the sale. Read the actual auction documents for the buyer’s premium, taxes, shipping, and return rules. These cannot be determined from a listing in isolation; do not assume a right to return or a particular fee structure.

Questions to ask the auction specialist

  • What is the case condition, and is polishing or restoration known?
  • Are the dial, hands, bezel, crown, and bracelet known to be original, replaced, refinished, or unconfirmed?
  • Was the movement inspected? If the listing says “running,” what was observed and when?
  • Is there dated service documentation? What work and replacement parts does it record?
  • Can an independent, qualified watchmaker examine the lot before bidding, and what do the sale rules allow?
  • Is there a recent water-resistance test result? If not, treat water resistance as unverified.

What “running” means—and what it does not

A statement that a watch is running describes operation at a point in time; on its own, it does not show that the watch was recently serviced, keeps accurate time, is reliable, or that every function works correctly. Sotheby’s explicitly says watches should not be assumed operative. Ask what was tested and what the report means by “running,” and do not treat that word as a substitute for service records or a qualified inspection. Sotheby’s buyer guidance.

Why water resistance needs separate verification

A model’s original water-resistance specification—or a case described as water-resistant—does not prove that the particular watch remains water-resistant now. Both Phillips and Sotheby’s disclaim a guarantee of current water resistance. If water exposure matters to your decision, ask for a recent pressure-test result from a qualified watchmaker. Without one, regard water resistance as unverified and avoid exposing the watch to water on the strength of the catalog wording alone. Phillips buyer guidance; Sotheby’s buyer guidance.

How to compare two auction lots

Use the same questions for each lot so that a detailed report is not mistaken for a better-condition watch—or a sparse report for proof of a problem.

Comparison point What to assess
Disclosure How specific and complete are the condition statements? What was examined, and what remains unknown?
Visible condition Do the photographs support the description? Are important views missing, or are any details unclear or inconsistent?
Repairs and service Are known repairs, replacements, restorations, or service records described and documented?
Inspection access Can you inspect the lot or arrange an independent qualified watchmaker’s examination under the sale rules?
Cost and terms What sale fees and other terms apply, and what unresolved work or risk could affect your maximum bid?

The auction-house guidance supports caution about disclosure and the value of inspection; it does not predict which of two specific watches is the better purchase. That depends on the actual lots, available evidence, and terms of sale.

Set a maximum bid that reflects uncertainty

If service history, originality, or defects remain unclear after your questions and any permitted inspection, treat them as unresolved risks—not as confirmed problems, and not as assurances that everything is fine. Decide what uncertainty you are willing to accept and account for possible work when setting your limit. Include the fees and other costs stated in the specific auction’s terms; do not rely on a headline bid alone to represent the full purchase cost.

Phillips says, “Prospective buyers should inspect all watches and clocks prior to the auction to evaluate the condition of property offered for sale.” Sotheby’s says, “All watches, wristwatches and pocket watches are sold on the basis of their decorative and historic value and should not be assumed to be operative.” Phillips buyer guidance; Sotheby’s buyer guidance.
