The on-watch menu for viewing the installed version varies, so use your model’s owner’s manual to find it.
Choose an update method

Update through Garmin Connect
- Pair the compatible watch with the Garmin Connect app on your phone.
- Keep the watch connected to the phone so Garmin Connect can download available software in the background.
- When the watch installs the update automatically or prompts you, follow the on-watch instructions.
Garmin says an update may take up to a week to download before installation or a prompt. That is a general expectation, not a guaranteed schedule for every model or rollout. See Garmin’s update guidance.
Update with Garmin Express
Garmin Express is a computer application for Windows and Mac, not a mobile or tablet app. Its workflow uses the watch’s USB charging cable; Garmin’s Express installation guidance describes its desktop availability.

- Connect the watch to your computer with its USB charging cable and launch Garmin Express.
- Select the watch in Express. If updates are available, choose Install or Install All.
- Follow any terms, conditions, or important-note prompts shown by the application.
- After the transfer finishes, disconnect the watch and respond to its installation prompt.
- If there is no prompt, or you chose to install later, use Settings > System > Software Update > Update Available on the watch, if those labels are present on your model.
Garmin’s Express update instructions describe the connection and install process. Menu labels can vary; consult the owner’s manual if the path is missing. If you need a replacement cable, confirm that its connector fits your watch. A working compatible cable is sufficient.
Update over Wi-Fi
Some Garmin watches can download and install software during a Wi-Fi sync. Check the owner’s manual for your exact model to confirm Wi-Fi support and learn how to add a network. Garmin outlines the option in its general software update guidance and fēnix 8 AMOLED update information.

Check whether the watch software is current
- Find the exact model name of your watch.
- Open that model’s Garmin support page and review its software version and dated release history.
- On the watch, find the installed software version using the menu described in its owner’s manual.
- Compare the installed version with the release information for that same model.
Garmin’s support pages show model-specific versions and histories. For examples, see the pages for Instinct 2 and Venu 4. Release information can change, and a version number for one model is not a valid comparison for another.

Garmin’s general support guidance does not establish one universal menu path for viewing the watch’s installed software version. Use the owner’s manual for your model rather than assuming a path from another watch. Also, Garmin Express’s About screen shows the version of the computer application, not the watch software; Garmin explains how to check the application version here.
