Start by identifying where the update stopped: transferring through Garmin Connect, downloading or preparing in Garmin Express, or installing on the watch itself. The right fix depends on that stage and your Garmin model. For a frozen installation screen on the watch, avoid a forced shutdown or factory reset unless Garmin’s instructions for your exact model say to do so.
First, identify the update stage
Check which screen or device is showing the problem before trying a fix:

- Garmin Connect on your phone: the update may still be downloading to the watch or may have failed during transfer.
- Garmin Express on a computer: the problem may be with the app, computer, internet connection or download.
- The watch itself: the update may be waiting for confirmation or already installing. Do not interrupt an on-watch installation using a generic button combination, reset or file deletion; recovery steps vary by model. Check your watch’s manual or contact Garmin Support before taking action.
If Garmin Express is stuck at “Preparing”
A “Preparing” screen does not necessarily mean the process has frozen. Garmin says the interface may not refresh even while Express continues working in the background. See Garmin’s guidance for an update stuck at “Preparing”. If it remains there, try Garmin’s recovery steps in order:

- Update Garmin Express using its update check.
- Quit Garmin Express completely, then reopen it.
- On Windows, right-click Garmin Express and choose Run as administrator.
- Remove the watch from Garmin Express, then add it again.
- Restart the computer and retry the update.
If the download is frozen, reverses or shows an error
Garmin lists internet problems and a computer going to sleep among possible causes. Work through these checks before changing settings or reinstalling the app:

- Update Garmin Express. Use its update check or Garmin’s official Garmin Express download page. Version numbers change, so do not rely on an old “latest version” number.
- Check available disk space. Garmin says downloads through Express may require up to 20 GB of free space. That is a possible requirement, not the amount every watch update uses.
- Check the connection. Use a stable, high-speed connection. If possible, try Ethernet or a stronger Wi-Fi signal. Public or workplace networks, and mobile, satellite, fixed-wireless or dial-up connections, may cause problems.
- Keep the computer awake during the download, then restart it fully and try again.
- On Windows, run Express as administrator.
- If it still fails, reinstall Express. Uninstall it, restart the computer, reinstall the current version from Garmin, and retry.
Garmin also recommends checking that the computer’s date, time and time zone are correct; resetting network equipment; reviewing proxy or LAN settings; and disabling a VPN if one is in use. Close other apps that may be accessing the watch: Garmin says only one application can read from or write to the device at a time. If Garmin Connect reports a transfer or storage error
Match the message and model before applying a fix. For the specific Forerunner 35 on iOS error “Sync Failed FileTransferError notEnoughSpace,” Garmin says the watch lacks sufficient storage for the update transfer and recommends downloading and installing the update with Garmin Express on a computer. If the watch does not show an install prompt
If Garmin Express finishes the update but the watch does not display an installation prompt—or you selected “Install Tonight”—check the watch’s software update menu. On some models, the route is Settings > System > Software Update > Update Available. Labels and menu paths vary; use your model’s manual if they differ. Garmin describes this step in its Garmin Express software update instructions.

Garmin watches do not all support the same update methods. Check your model’s manual before switching routes; Garmin provides manuals through its manuals page.

When to stop troubleshooting
If the watch is frozen on its installation screen, or the same failure returns after the relevant computer or transfer checks, do not assume a reset or file deletion is safe. Find the procedure for your exact model in its manual or contact Garmin Support with the model name, the update method and the exact error or screen text.
