If it will be put away, avoid leaving it in darkness for more than six months, and use the instructions for your specific caliber when it needs a full recharge.
Where to keep an Eco-Drive watch between wears
Choose a bright, ordinary place where light can reach the watch face, such as a shelf or dresser away from prolonged dark storage. Citizen says Eco-Drive converts natural and artificial light into energy. Direct sunlight is not required, though Citizen identifies sunny outdoor light as a faster charging condition than indoor fluorescent light.

A watch winder is not needed to charge an Eco-Drive: it moves a watch but does not provide the light that powers it. Citizen’s guidance describes light as the energy source and does not establish that a special charger or illuminated storage case is necessary or compatible.

Stored energy can keep a fully charged Eco-Drive operating without light, but darkness does not recharge it. Citizen Watch US describes power reserves ranging from six months to five years depending on the model; selected models with a power-save function are stated to last up to seven years. These are not guarantees for every watch. Citizen Watch US advises not storing an Eco-Drive in darkness for more than six months. If yours has been stored longer, give it the full recharge time specified for its caliber.

How long does recharging take?
Charging time depends on the watch’s movement and the amount and type of light. The following are Citizen Watch US examples for basic analog Eco-Drive watches, not universal specifications:

Citizen notes that recharge times vary by timepiece and light source. A brief exposure may add some charge but should not be treated as a full recharge, especially if the watch has stopped or has been left dark for a long period. Check the Citizen manual and setting instructions for your caliber’s recharge guidance. What to do if the second hand jumps
On some Eco-Drive models, a second hand that advances in two-second intervals indicates low charge. Put the watch in bright light and allow the full recharge period for that model. If the hand continues jumping after a full recharge, some watches may need a reset; the procedure depends on the movement, so follow the instructions for the exact caliber rather than trying a generic reset.
