Yes, a bigger collection can mean more winding and resetting—but only if you expect every watch to stay running. You can store most mechanical watches safely while stopped, then wind and set the one you plan to wear. A winder is an optional convenience for selected automatic watches, not a requirement. Follow the care guidance for each model.
What makes a larger collection feel inconvenient?
Automatic watches use wrist motion to supply winding energy. When an unworn watch’s power reserve runs down, it stops. Before wearing it again, you may need to wind and set it; a watch with additional displays or complications can take longer to bring back to the correct time and settings.

The burden is therefore less about the number of watches than about your expectations and habits: how often you rotate them, how much resetting you tolerate, and whether you want several watches ready at once. There is no established numerical threshold at which a collection becomes too large to manage.
Can you let an unworn watch stop?
Yes. Mühle-Glashütte says unworn watches can be stored in their cases or a cabinet, protected from dust, moisture, and direct sunlight. It recommends winding by hand once a month during long-term storage to help distribute movement oils. Seiko’s advice differs in emphasis: it recommends winding the mainspring every day at a fixed time to improve the accuracy of its mechanical watches, including self-winding models. That recommendation is specific to Seiko’s guidance, so check the instructions for your own watch rather than treating one maker’s routine as a rule for every movement. Should you use an automatic watch winder?
A winder can keep a compatible automatic watch running between wears, reducing the need to wind and set it each time. Mühle-Glashütte describes winders as a convenient storage option for its automatic watches. But convenience is not the same as necessity: if you are comfortable restarting a watch when you choose it, a winder may add little value.

Check the maker’s instructions for the specific movement before using one. In a 2013 IWC Collectors Forum post, watchmaker Jack Freedman said he had consulted IWC’s technical department and reported that it did not recommend winders for seven-day models, citing possible wear in the winding system. That is a model-specific warning, not evidence that all winders harm all automatic watches. Read the forum post.
Choose a routine that matches how you wear your watches

How often do mechanical watches need service?
Service intervals are manufacturer-specific, not a single schedule for every mechanical watch. Seiko recommends examination, cleaning, and oiling at a service center every three years for its mechanical watches. Patek Philippe recommends that its mechanical watches be serviced every eight to ten years through an official service center or authorized retailer. Follow the guidance for your own model and use an appropriately authorized service provider. Seiko’s FAQ and Patek Philippe’s care guidance state these recommendations.
Patek Philippe lists a 38–48-hour power reserve for its self-winding movements, with exceptions for specific models. That range illustrates why restart timing depends on the watch; it is not a power-reserve figure for mechanical watches in general. Patek Philippe’s watch-care page provides the qualification.
