Check whether your watch band or clasp is magnetic, and follow the calibration steps for your exact model if readings remain erratic. There is no universal safe distance or calibration motion that works for every watch.
Why nearby magnets and metal affect a watch compass
A watch compass senses the Earth’s magnetic field, so nearby magnetic or metal objects can distort the direction it reports. Casio warns that strong magnetism can cause reading errors, while Apple notes that magnets can affect compass-sensor accuracy. Sources manufacturers identify include permanent magnets, metal objects, electronics, high-voltage or aerial wires, vehicles, and buildings. Interference can come from the surroundings or from something worn on the watch itself. A poor reading in one place does not by itself show that the sensor is damaged; the cited manufacturer guidance describes inaccurate readings and ways to reduce interference, not permanent damage from ordinary exposure.
Move to a better place before taking a reading
- Go outdoors to an open area. Step away from buildings, especially tall or reinforced-concrete structures, and from vehicles. Casio cautions that readings may not be possible indoors, particularly in reinforced concrete, or in motor vehicles, boats, and aircraft.
- Increase separation from magnetic and metal sources. Move away from metal structures, permanent magnets, household electronics, chargers, and high-voltage or aerial wires. Garmin specifically advises avoiding vehicles, buildings, and overhead power lines when improving heading accuracy; Samsung recommends outdoor use away from tall buildings, and Huawei advises avoiding buildings, metal, and strong magnetic fields. - Take a fresh reading after moving. Hold the watch as directed by its manual and allow the compass to settle. The manufacturer guidance does not establish a single separation distance that is safe for every watch and environment, so move farther away if the reading is still unstable.
Check whether the band or clasp contains magnets
Some bands are named by their manufacturers as possible sources of compass interference. Check the exact band family and version rather than assuming all bands of a similar style behave alike.

- Apple Watch: Apple identifies Leather Link, Leather Loop, Milanese Loop, and earlier Sport Loop bands as potentially affecting compass accuracy. - Samsung Galaxy Watch: Samsung warns that its Magnetic D-Buckle Sport band may affect compass accuracy. Check the guidance for your specific watch and band before choosing a replacement. Samsung’s Compass App user guide
If the band appears to be the source, try a manufacturer-confirmed compatible band or remove the suspected band when practical, then retest away from other interference. Replacing a band cannot correct interference from a nearby building, vehicle, magnet, or other environmental source.
Calibrate only as your watch maker directs
Calibration procedures differ by model. If the watch asks you to calibrate, or the reading remains erratic after you have moved away from interference, consult its own manual. First leave the suspected magnetic field: calibration is not a substitute for taking the reading in a suitable location.

Menu labels and calibration behavior vary by model, software, and locale. If calibration does not help in an open location, check the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions for that exact device.

Keep a handheld compass separate from the watch
If you use a second compass, take its reading with it separated from the watch. Apple specifically advises separating an external compass from Apple Watch while reading it; Suunto also advises keeping a compass away from metal and magnetic fields. A handheld compass can be affected by the same local interference, so moving it only a little away from the watch may not be enough if other sources are nearby. If the reading is still unreliable
- Retest outdoors, away from buildings, vehicles, metal, electronics, magnets, and power lines.
- Check the exact watch band and clasp for manufacturer warnings about magnetic material.
- Calibrate using the watch’s own instructions, then test again in the clearer location.
- If the problem persists, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support rather than assuming a universal repair or calibration fix.
