To choose a compass watch, first check whether its compass can show your heading while you are standing still, then assess how clearly and quickly you can read and use it. Confirm the model’s calibration and north-reference options, water-resistance rating, and comfort for daily wear. A compass screen alone does not tell you how the watch behaves or how useful it will be outdoors.
Will the compass work while you are standing still?
This is the most important distinction if you want to know which way you are facing rather than the direction you are travelling. A GPS-based compass derives direction from movement. Garmin says its GPS compass needs movement of approximately two to three miles per hour to determine direction and may not function properly when standing still or moving slowly. Garmin describes a 3-axis electronic compass as usable while idle or moving slowly. These are different behaviors; check which type the exact watch offers.

A movement-dependent direction indicator may suit someone who mainly wants a travel heading while walking or running. For checking your bearing at a trail junction or while stopped, look for an electronic compass that works at rest. A watch may offer several navigation screens, so verify that the specific compass feature—not just another direction or GPS function—meets your need.

Look at the actual compass screen and the steps needed to reach it. Useful details include a numeric heading in degrees, cardinal directions, a clear north indicator, and the ability to set or track a bearing. Consider whether these are visible at a glance and whether the compass is easy to open from the watch’s menus or activity screens.

Suunto’s Core 2 guide documents a compass view with a North indicator and numeric heading, as well as bezel use and bearing tracking. It also instructs users: “In Compass mode, remove the watch and hold it horizontally, pointing the North needle in your direction of travel.” That workflow is model-specific; check the manual for any watch you are considering to see how it displays and handles a bearing.
What calibration and north-reference settings should you check?
Electronic compass readings can depend on correct setup and use. Suunto’s Core 2 guide says to calibrate when prompted, hold the device level, set the correct declination, and keep it away from metal and magnetic fields. Garmin’s support guidance also describes calibration and, where available, reference settings for true, magnetic, grid, or user north.

How do you judge legibility and everyday comfort?
Compass usefulness depends on more than the sensor: you have to read the display in the conditions where you plan to use it. Check the screen contrast, character size, backlight or luminescence, and whether the heading remains clear in bright daylight and low light. If possible, view the exact model in person rather than relying on the category name or product photos.

A large display may be easier to read but less convenient under a sleeve; a smaller, lighter watch may feel less obtrusive but make compass details harder to see. These are personal trade-offs, and the official guidance cited here does not establish a universal winner for readability or comfort.

How much water resistance do you need?
Use the rating and intended-use guidance for the exact model, not a general label such as “outdoor” or “compass watch.” The manufacturer’s Suunto examples illustrate why: the Core 2 user guide lists 100 m / 328 ft / 10 bar / 10 ATM, while the Core user guide lists 30 m / 100 ft. These specifications apply to those named models, not to all watches with a compass.
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for what the rating means for activities such as swimming, water sports, or diving. A depth figure by itself does not establish that a watch is appropriate for every water activity.

Should a compass watch replace a map compass?
Not necessarily. A watch can make it convenient to check a heading, but for navigation in unfamiliar terrain, consider carrying a mechanical compass and a suitable map as well. Suunto describes its mechanical compasses as usable with standard maps and advises keeping a reliable compass when entering unknown terrain. Treat the watch as one navigation aid, not as a reason to leave your backup behind.

A practical checklist before choosing
- Match compass behavior to your use: Decide whether you need a heading while stationary or only a direction derived from movement, and confirm the watch supports it.
- Inspect the compass display: Check for a readable heading, cardinal directions, a north indicator, bearing setting or tracking, and a convenient way to reach the screen.
- Read the manual’s setup instructions: Verify calibration steps, declination handling, available north references, and any guidance about holding the watch level or avoiding magnetic interference.
- Check the exact water-resistance specification: Confirm the model’s rating and the manufacturer’s intended-use guidance for your activities.
- Try the watch on: Assess screen visibility, case size and weight, strap comfort, and how it fits your everyday routine.
- Plan for backup navigation: If you will enter unfamiliar terrain, decide whether to carry a mechanical compass and map alongside the watch.
