If your watch compass gives erratic or unexpected directions, first move away from magnetic interference, then calibrate it using the instructions for your exact watch model. Take the next reading as the manual specifies, and check magnetic declination if you are comparing the watch with a map. Calibration and declination correct different things, so changing one will not necessarily fix the other.
Before calibrating, check the watch and your surroundings
Compass calibration is model-specific: button sequences and motions are not interchangeable. Find the watch’s product name or module number and open its official manual before starting. Then test outdoors, away from potential sources of magnetic interference. Depending on the manual, these may include vehicles, buildings, overhead power lines, metal objects, and strong magnetic fields.

If the watch displays a calibration prompt, follow it. Otherwise, use the manual’s procedure for the exact model. Do not assume that a method shown for one watch from a manufacturer applies to its other models.
Follow the procedure for your exact model
Garmin Descent G2: full or quick calibration
The Descent G2 owner’s manual says the compass is calibrated at the factory and automatic calibration is enabled by default. If readings are irregular, the manual provides a manual calibration option under Sensors & Accessories > Compass. It describes full calibration, which rotates the watch through all orientations, and quick calibration, which uses a figure-eight motion. Garmin says the full procedure provides better accuracy for diving, while the quick procedure is suitable for other activities. It also advises calibrating outdoors and away from magnetic influences such as vehicles, buildings, and overhead power lines. These directions are for the Descent G2, not a universal Garmin procedure.
#1 Best Overall
- 1. DIGITAL COMPASS FOR OUTDOOR REFERENCE. Check your direction during hiking, camping and outdoor activities with the built-in digital compass. Calibrate before first use, after replacing the battery or when entering a new environment, and keep the watch level and away from magnetic interference.
- 2. STEP TRACKING WITHOUT AN APP. Track steps, estimated distance, calories, activity time and average speed directly on your wrist. No phone connection, app or charging cable is required, making it a practical pedometer watch for walking, running and daily training.
- 3. LIGHTWEIGHT OUTDOOR CONSTRUCTION. The carbon fiber composite case combines a durable outdoor design with comfortable everyday wear. A 24mm adjustable black nylon hook-and-loop strap provides a secure, breathable fit for hiking, workouts, work and travel.
- 4. CLEAR FSTN DISPLAY AND EL BACKLIGHT. The high-contrast FSTN digital display is designed for easy daytime reading, while the EL backlight illuminates the screen in low-light conditions. Additional functions include stopwatch, countdown timer, pacer, alarm, calendar and 12/24-hour time.
- 5. 50M WATER RESISTANCE. Built to handle rain, sweat, hand washing and everyday splashes with 50-meter water resistance. Do not use the watch for diving, hot showers or saunas, and do not press the buttons while the watch is underwater.
Casio PRO TREK Module 5602: figure-eight or two-point calibration
The Casio guide for Module 5602 recommends figure-eight or two-point calibration when readings differ from another compass or before a climb or trek. Strong magnetism can prevent accurate readings or calibration. Use the button sequence and illustrations in the guide; do not substitute instructions for a different Casio module.
Suunto Core 2: level, slow clockwise rotation
The Suunto Core 2 guide says to keep the device level and rotate it slowly clockwise. Its prompted calibration procedure calls for about 15 seconds per round until activation; for deviations noticed while in compass mode, it also describes a level, slow clockwise rotation 5–10 times. The guide advises avoiding metal and magnetic fields. Follow the Core 2 instructions only for that model; other Suunto watches may use a different procedure.

Suunto Ocean: recalibrate after interference or impact
The Suunto Ocean support page says its compass calibrates itself during use. A strong magnetic field or hard knock can cause a wrong direction; in that case, the page calls for a new calibration. It also directs users to set an accurate declination value.
Take a new reading with the right handling
After calibration, take a fresh reading using the position and handling specified by the watch’s manual. Keep the watch level when the manual requires it: Suunto Core 2 explicitly does. The Garmin Descent G2 and Casio Module 5602 instructions cited above do not establish level handling as a rule for every model, so follow your own watch’s directions rather than applying it universally.

Check declination when the watch disagrees with a map
A compass watch indicates magnetic north. Many paper maps use true north, so their north references may differ even when the watch is functioning properly. Declination is the angle between magnetic north and true north; its value depends on location and changes over time. Check what north your map uses and whether the watch’s declination setting is appropriate for that use.
Suunto’s Core 2 guide explains that paper maps point to true north, while compasses point to magnetic north. It also notes that orienteering maps are drawn relative to magnetic north and advises using zero declination correction for those maps. Use a current local value when a true-north map requires a correction; a value for one place should not be treated as universal.

- 【Waterproof Watches for Women/Men】164 Ft /50M/5ATM water resistance helps you do all kinds of indoor/outdoor sports or daily use freely.(Note: Please clean the outer shell promptly after swimming or exercising. To prevent damage to the watch caused by seawater or sweat corrosion.Don't push the button when it is under water, also do not wearing it for hot water bath.)
Calibration and declination address separate issues. Calibration concerns the compass sensor’s behavior in its magnetic surroundings; declination accounts for the difference between magnetic and true north. Setting declination will not repair a disturbed sensor, and repeating calibration will not by itself resolve a mismatch between north references.

If readings are still inaccurate
- Identify the exact watch model or module. Use its official manual, not a procedure copied from a different watch.
- Repeat the test away from likely interference. Choose an outdoor location away from the magnetic sources identified in your model’s manual.
- Calibrate exactly as directed. Follow any on-screen prompt, prescribed motion, pace, and level-handling requirement.
- Take a fresh reading and check the map reference. Confirm that you are comparing magnetic north with magnetic north, or have accounted for declination when needed.
- Contact the manufacturer for the exact model if the problem remains. The cited manuals do not establish a universal reset or repair procedure, so do not assume that a reset is the next fix.
These official instructions do not establish a general accuracy percentage or calibration failure rate, and persistent inaccuracy alone does not prove that the watch has a hardware fault.
