To keep the bright, interactive screen on a little longer after you use it, change Screen timeout. They do different jobs: AOD shows a dimmed watch face, while timeout only extends the active screen temporarily.
Turn on Always On Display
On supported Galaxy Watch models, enable AOD on the watch or from the connected phone:
- On the watch, open Settings → Display → Always On Display and turn it on.
- Or, in the Galaxy Wearable app, open Watch settings → Display → Always On Display and turn it on.
The watch face should remain visible in a dimmed, lower-power state when you are not actively using the watch. It will not necessarily stay at full brightness or show a fully interactive app continuously. Samsung notes that AOD uses more battery. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch display-settings guide covers the setting and related display controls.
AOD, Screen timeout, and wake controls: what each does
| What you want | Setting to use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| See the time without moving your wrist | Always On Display | A dimmed watch face remains visible; it is not the same as a continuously active, full-brightness screen. |
| Keep the bright screen on longer after tapping | Screen timeout | Extends the active display for a limited period. Available durations vary by model. |
| Wake the screen by lifting your arm | Raise wrist to wake | Turns on the active display when the gesture is recognized. |
| Wake the screen with a tap | Touch screen to wake | Wakes the watch when you touch the display, if enabled and not suppressed by a mode such as Water lock. |
| Wake it by turning a physical bezel | Turn bezel to wake | Available on supported models with a physical rotating bezel. |
Samsung lists these as separate display controls, so changing Screen timeout alone does not make the watch face continuously visible. See Samsung’s display-settings instructions.

Keep the active screen on longer
Use Screen timeout when you are reading a notification, checking a timer, viewing a map, or following a workout screen and want extra time before the display dims or turns off.
- On the watch, open Settings → Display → Screen timeout.
- Select the longest duration available on your model if you need more time.
Depending on the watch and Galaxy Wearable app version, you may also find the control in Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Display → Screen timeout. Samsung does not specify one maximum duration for every model, so the available choices on your watch are the reliable guide. Samsung’s Screen timeout and brightness instructions provide the general path.

Wake the screen without AOD
If you prefer to save battery and only need the screen when you look at the watch, leave AOD off and use a wake control instead:
- Raise wrist to wake: Enable it under Settings → Display on the watch. The exact label or location can vary.
- Touch screen to wake: Enable it under Settings → Display if available.
- Turn bezel to wake: On supported Classic models, rotating the physical bezel can wake the display.
- Home/Power button: Press it to wake the watch if gestures or touch are unavailable.
Wake gestures are not a substitute for AOD: they make the display appear when triggered rather than keeping the time visible between interactions.

If AOD or wake gestures do not work
Try these checks in order. Power saving and special modes can prevent otherwise enabled display features from behaving as expected.
- Confirm the right setting is enabled. Check Settings → Display → Always On Display for persistent visibility. If you expect a wrist gesture to wake the screen, check Raise wrist to wake separately.
- Turn off Power saving while testing. Samsung says Power saving can disable battery-intensive features such as AOD and can prevent wake functions. Samsung’s battery optimization guidance explains its effect on watch features.
- Check modes in Quick settings. Do Not Disturb, Theater, Good night or Bedtime modes may suppress wake behavior. The effect can vary by model and software. Samsung’s wake-up gesture troubleshooting guide identifies silent modes and Power saving as possible causes.
- Check Water lock. If it is on, the watch may ignore touch or wake gestures to prevent accidental activation around water. See the next section to exit it.
- Restart the watch if the settings appear correct but the display still does not respond.
- Check for watch software updates through Galaxy Wearable, then test again.
- Compare wake methods. Try the Home/Power button and touch wake. If the button works but wrist movement does not, the issue may be limited to the gesture or its settings; if the display remains unresponsive, contact Samsung support.
If touch wake fails
Confirm Touch screen to wake is enabled, turn off Water lock, and make sure the screen and your fingers are dry. Remove gloves, or enable Touch sensitivity if your model offers it. Use the Home/Power button as a fallback. If touch remains unreliable after a restart and software update, a screen or hardware fault may need service. Samsung describes touch sensitivity and display controls and Water lock behavior.

Turn Water lock off after swimming
Water lock intentionally prevents accidental screen activation. On supported watches, swipe down from the watch face, tap the water-droplet Water lock icon to enable it, and after swimming press and hold the Home/Power button to turn it off; follow any on-screen prompt. A screen that does not respond while Water lock is active is behaving as intended. Samsung’s Water lock guide gives the instructions.

AOD shortens battery life compared with leaving it off, and the effect depends on the watch and how it is used; there is no universal battery-loss figure that applies to every model. If your battery margin is already poor, try turning AOD off, reducing brightness, shortening Screen timeout, and disabling connectivity or background features you do not need before considering service.

For lower brightness, swipe down from the watch face, open Quick settings, tap Brightness, and reduce the level. Samsung recommends lowering brightness as a precaution against screen burn. Persistent static elements can contribute to image retention or discoloration over time, but burn-in is not inevitable. If you want to reduce exposure, use AOD selectively, change watch faces periodically, or switch AOD off overnight. If you notice persistent outlines, faded colors, or patches, disable AOD and lower brightness; contact Samsung if the marks remain. Samsung’s display guidance covers brightness and screen-burn prevention.
Choose settings for how you use the watch
| Use case | Suggested setup |
|---|---|
| Everyday glanceability | AOD on, brightness set to a comfortable level, and wrist wake enabled if you want the full display on demand. |
| Maximum battery life | AOD off, wrist wake on, and a shorter timeout. |
| Workout | Use AOD if seeing the time or limited watch-face information at a glance matters. The full workout app screen may still time out. |
| Bedside or overnight use | Turn AOD off or reduce brightness; use a sleep or Bedtime setting if you want the display dark. Behavior varies by model. |
| Swimming | Use Water lock to prevent accidental touch activation, then turn it off after the activity. |
| Theater or meetings | Use Theater or Do Not Disturb mode when you want to limit display or wake behavior; exact effects vary by model. |
Model and software differences
Samsung’s display-settings guidance specifically covers Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 Wear OS models. The same general concepts apply to newer Wear OS Galaxy Watches, but menus and available controls can change across models and software versions. Older Tizen-based Galaxy Watch devices may use labels such as Wake-up gesture or Touch wake-up, sometimes within an Advanced menu. Phone, provider, and software version can also affect the path. If a listed option is missing, look in the watch’s Display settings or the corresponding Galaxy Wearable display menu rather than assuming the watch supports every control. Samsung notes that display settings vary.
