That measurement tells you the width needed at the strap’s attachment end—but lug shape and attachment style also affect whether a replacement will fit.
What lug width measures
Lugs are the projections on the watch case that hold the strap. A spring bar typically runs between the lugs, and the strap attaches there. Lug width is the distance between the inside faces of the lugs at that attachment point—not the case diameter, the strap’s buckle width, or the width of your wrist.

Measure the gap between the lugs
- Set the watch down securely. Place it face-down on a soft surface so it cannot slide or scratch.
- Find the strap attachment point. Locate the gap between the two lugs where the spring bar sits.
- Measure inside edge to inside edge. Use a metric ruler or measuring tape and read the distance in millimeters. Mondaine gives the same instruction: “Using a measuring tape or ruler, measure the exact distance between the insides of the lugs, where the spring bar sits.” Mondaine’s strap-size guide.
- Use the result as the strap’s attachment-end width. Check that the replacement strap is specified for that width.
Calipers can help if the ruler reading is hard to judge. If your measurement falls between listed sizes, remeasure carefully or check the watch manufacturer’s model-specific specification; there is no established universal rounding rule.
Check fit beyond the millimeter measurement
Confirm the lug shape and strap end
Some watches have straight lugs, while others have curved lugs or cases that need a specially shaped strap end. Jaeger-LeCoultre identifies lug shape as a compatibility check, and some straps have notched ends to clear the case. A strap with the right width may still not fit the watch’s shape. Check the attachment system
Conventional straps usually attach with a spring bar; quick-change systems may let you swap straps without a tool. Integrated or proprietary attachments can require a strap designed for that specific watch. If the existing strap blocks access to the gap, remove it only if you know how to handle its attachment safely. A spring bar tool can help with conventional spring-bar straps; if you are unsure, ask the manufacturer or a watchmaker rather than forcing the strap or bar.
Keep lug width separate from buckle width
Lug width describes the strap end that connects to the watch. Buckle width describes the other end, where the strap meets its buckle. They are separate measurements, so check both if you are replacing the buckle or buying a strap whose taper matters. Choose a replacement once you have the measurement
Start with a strap whose attachment-end width matches the measured gap. Then verify its end shape and attachment system against your watch. Consider strap length or taper for fit and appearance, and choose a material that suits your preferences; lug width alone does not determine which material is best. For unusual, curved, notched, integrated, or proprietary designs, consult the manufacturer’s strap finder or a watchmaker.
