First identify where it is coming loose: at the watch case, at the buckle, or around your wrist. If the strap is detaching from the case, the spring bar may not be seated in both lug holes, may be damaged, or may not match the watch. A “20 mm” strap width alone does not tell you which spring bar to use.
Find where the strap is coming loose
With the watch off your wrist, gently move the strap and watch head to locate the movement. A strap that separates from the case points to the spring bar, its fit, or the lugs. If the strap stays attached to the case but opens at the buckle, inspect the buckle hardware instead. If everything is attached but the watch slides around your wrist, the issue is fit rather than a failed case attachment.

If it is slipping at the watch case
Check that both spring-bar ends are seated
Many watch straps attach with a spring bar: pressure retracts its ends, and when released they extend into holes in the case lugs. If one end misses its hole, the strap can look attached but come away during wear. In good light, check both sides of the strap where it meets the lugs. Fabric or leather may conceal a missed end, so look closely and feel for the bar ends sitting in place.
Inspect the bar and strap fit
Look for a bent, rusty, damaged, or slow-to-extend bar. Also check whether the strap end fits the gap between the lugs. A strap end that is too narrow may shift sideways and pull the bar toward one lug. Watchmaker David Christianson notes in the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute’s “The Novice Watchmaker: On Band Attachment” that a bar that is too short can pop out during use.

Do not choose a bar by width alone
“20 mm” usually describes the nominal strap or lug width, not the full spring-bar specification. The required length, body and tip diameters, tip style, compressed range, and strap thickness can vary by watch and strap. Check the watch maker’s specifications where available, and match the replacement to the case and strap assembly. A bar that is too short may not stay engaged; one that is too long or thick, or has incompatible tips, may not fit or seat correctly. Thicker or longer is not automatically safer.
Refit or replace a case spring bar
Before you start
These steps apply to a standard detachable spring-bar setup. Some watches use quick-release bars, screw-mounted bars, or fixed bars; identify the attachment before proceeding. For a standard bar, work over a stable, well-lit surface and place the watch face down on a soft cloth. A suitable forked spring-bar tool can compress the bar ends without using a sharp improvised tool against the case.

Refit a sound, correctly specified bar
- Use the forked tool to compress one end of the bar and position the strap between the lugs.
- Guide the bar end into its lug hole, then release the other end carefully so it can extend into the opposite hole.
- Inspect both sides to confirm that each end is seated. Do not rely on the strap looking aligned from above.
- Give the connection a gentle tug. Do not use a destructive pull test, and do not wear the watch until both ends are secure.
For a bar that is worn, damaged, or mismatched, replace it only with one that matches the watch maker’s specification. A forked tool is appropriate for many standard bars, but it cannot fix damaged lug holes or make an incompatible bar fit.
If the buckle end is loose
If the strap remains secure at the case, check the buckle’s own spring bar and tongue for damage or movement. Buckle repair is a separate job from securing the strap to the case. Garmin’s buckle replacement instructions apply only to compatible Garmin quick-release bands; Garmin advises taking a watch to a jeweler when its buckle hardware needs replacement. Follow your watch maker’s instructions for other models.

When to stop and get a watchmaker’s help
Stop wearing the watch and have a watchmaker inspect it if a correctly specified bar keeps slipping, either lug hole looks worn or damaged, or removal is difficult. The problem may involve the lugs, strap thickness, or installation rather than the bar alone. Do not force a stuck bar, pry aggressively against the case, or try to correct the fit by drilling or filing.
